Doctoral Study From 2000 to 2009, more graduates om Puget Sound went on to earn doctoral degrees than om any other baccalaureate college in Washington state, according to a survey by the National Opinion Research Center (NORC). The same survey ranked Puget Sound in the top 10 percent of baccalaureate colleges nationally. Scholarships and Fellowships Puget Sound students have earned 93 national scholarships since 2000. Past honors include Fulbright, Goldwater, Watson, Mellon, Phi Kappa Phi, Truman, and Rhodes scholarships. Science on Display Harned Hall provides 51,000 square feet of teaching laboratory space for the biology, chemistry, geology, and physics departments, and creates a dedicated space for environmental policy and decision making. It was built to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Rating standards, using sustainable materials and meeting stringent environmental guidelines. Commitment to Teaching Eighty-nine percent of Puget Sound’s faculty is full time, and 98 percent of tenure-track faculty members hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree. Six Puget Sound professors have received the Carnegie Foundation Washington State Professor of the Year award, more than at any other institution. Eighty-four percent of faculty members serve as student advisors. New Center for Health Sciences In fall 2011 Puget Sound opened Weyerhaeuser Hall, a 42,500-square-foot center for health sciences designed to prepare students for work in the dynamic fields of health and behavioral sciences. It is home to the college’s undergraduate programs in psychology, exercise science, and neuroscience, as well as graduate programs in occupational and physical therapy, bridging innovative teaching and research with hands-on clinical training. Athletics At Puget Sound almost 20 percent of students participate in intercollegiate NCAA Division III sports each year on 23 teams, 11 for men and 12 for women. The Loggers have won 40 Northwest Conference championships since 1999. In 2005–06 and 2006–07, Puget Sound was awarded the McIllroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy and is currently in second place for the 2011–12 trophy. Asian Languages and Cultures Puget Sound is the only liberal arts college to offer a nine-month study tour of Asia. Additionally, the college offers majors in Chinese, Japanese, and East Asian Languages. Global Service Puget Sound is consistently ranked among the nation’s top small colleges producing Peace Corps Volunteers. As of 2011 the college had 22 alumni in the corps. Civic Scholarship Initiative The Civic Scholarship Initiative supports programs that join together the south Puget Sound region and University of Puget Sound in projects of mutual concern, providing realworld laboratories for faculty and students while partnering with regional organizations to solve problems, develop policy, and educate. Current projects include habitat restoration in Puget Sound, a homelessness policy for Pierce County, and education achievement and assessment in local school districts. Related to the education initiative, Puget Sound hosted the Race and Pedagogy National Conference in September 2006, and October 2010. More than 800 people om colleges and universities, schools, and community organizations om across the nation attended the 2010 event. School of Music Puget Sound is the only national liberal arts college in the Northwest to be accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and to offer a full symphony orchestra, concert band, jazz band, and a comprehensive choral program. School of Business and Leadership Puget Sound is the only national liberal arts college in the Northwest to offer an interdisciplinary major in business. Medical and Law School Acceptance In 2011 Puget Sound graduates enjoyed a 78 percent acceptance rate to medical school. Graduates also enjoy a 74 percent law school acceptance rate. In recent years students have been admitted to medical programs at Stanford, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Oregon Health & Science University, Tuſts, University of Washington, and USC, among others. Students have been admitted to law programs at Boston College, Cornell, Georgetown, Michigan, New York University, UCLA, USC, and Yale, among others. Prelude, Passages & Perspectives Prelude, Passages & Perspectives, the innovative and highly successful Puget Sound eshman orientation program, was named the best in the nation by the American College Personnel Association. The Chronicle of Higher Education high- lighted Puget Sound’s program among top orientation offerings; others included Dartmouth, Princeton, and Georgetown. National Ranking Fiske Guide to Colleges, U.S. News & World Report, and The Princeton Review’s The Best 376 Colleges rank Puget Sound as one of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges.
