11MATURE STUDENTSApplicants who do not hold Centennial’spublished admission requirements may beconsidered for admission if they are 19 years of age on or before the start of a program.

Mature applicants to Nursing (BScN) programmust be 21 years of age by December 31 ofthe year in which they wish to commence theirstudies. As well they must have been awayfrom full-time formal education for at leasttwo years.

Mature applicants will be considered foradmission to Certificate and Diploma programson the following basis:

TRANSFER CREDITYou may be granted transfer credit atCentennial for courses you’ve taken at anaccredited college, university or in some cases,at the OAC level. Key points to know abouttransfer credit are:

• credit is granted on a course-by-coursebasis;

• transfer credit (and any other credit forlearning outside Centennial) can be used for up to 75 per cent of the course creditsneeded to earn your certificate or diplomaat Centennial;

• you must be able to provide an official transcript and a detailed description of thecourses for which you want credit;

PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT & RECOGNITIONPrior Learning Assessment & Recognition, alsoknown by the initials PLAR, helps youdemonstrate learning acquired through paststudy, work and life experience. Using PLAR,it is possible to evaluate your past learningagainst established academic standards.

The end goal: to determine if you shouldbe awarded Centennial College coursecredit(s).

The challenge process may include exams,interviews, demonstrations and presentations.

STUDENT ACTIVITYAll students are charged a yearly activity feewhich contributes to the operation of theStudent Association, student life activities, theAlumni Association, a bursary fund and thestudent centre building fund.

HEALTH INSURANCE FEEThis mandatory fee pays the premium for ahealth insurance plan which provides 80 percent ‘pay direct’ prescription drug coverage(exceptions apply), accidental dental expensereimbursement, and other limited benefits.This particular plan covers all Canadian residents who are full-time and part-time registrants in post-secondary, post-graduate,bachelor’s degree and degree programs.

International students pay a fee for a differenthealth insurance plan. Please see page 178.

PROGRAM INCIDENTALSSome programs may charge an incidental fee for special services, such as meals,cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training,mask fit testing or course materials.

STUDENT SERVICESAll full-time students are charged a non-refundable student services fee each semester.Part-time students are charged per studentcontact hour. This fee covers the photo ID card(one issue), sessional validation decals,assessment, convocation and one transcript on graduation.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYThis mandatory fee covers a number ofinformation technology support services forstudents.

COPYRIGHTThe Copyright/Video licensing fee (mandatory)allows the Centennial community to copymaterials used for educational purposes to the level specified in the Access Copyrightguidelines and to use videos in accordance withvideo licensing guidelines. CO-OP EDUCATIONDiploma, Advanced Diploma and Degreestudents enrolled in programs requiring workterms pay a co-op administrative fee each ‘in-class’ semester.

The fee helps cover the various costs of servicesrelated to co-op education, such as careerplanning, student preparation, promotion,placement assistance, work-term monitoring andon-going liaison with employers.

International students are eligible for co-opprograms.

PAYMENTAll current and any past-due fees must be paidbefore you can register for your classes. Thedeadline for payment is published in the offerof admission we send you after reviewing yourapplication.

FOUR WAYS TO PAYCentennial students may pay fees using one ofthe following payment plans:

1. Per-Year Payment PlanYou pay all required fees for a two-semesteracademic year prior to the start of fallsemester.

2. Per-Semester Installment PlanUsing this plan, you pay each semester’sfees by given dates prior to the start of thesemester. An Installment plan fee of $30 is charged for this service.

3. Fee-Deferral Plan, based on OSAPThis plan allows you to defer the payment ofyour fees until OSAP funds are payable to you. Please note that your application for OSAP does not result in automatic payment of your fees. There is a special procedure for applying OSAP funds towards your fee payment (fee deferral), and this requires coordination between you and the Student Financial Aid Office. For more information,please call 416-289-5300. A non-refundablefee of $130 is charged for this service forfirst year students. A non-refundable fee of$30 is charged for this service for returningstudents.

4. A new Installment plan will be introducedfor Winter 2006

LATE PAYMENTA late-payment fee is charged to returningstudents if all fees are not paid in full by thedeadline. The initial late-payment fee is $30and increases over time to $100.

CLASSROOM ANDAPPRENTICESHIP FEESThe mandatory classroom and apprenticeshipfees apply to apprenticeship students and areused to support the cost of instruction,instructional supplies, learning materials, toolsand training aids. These fees are refundable,less $100 administration charge and $55apprenticeship fee, up to and including thethird day of the program. No refunds will beissued after the third day of class. More detailson page 186.

FULL-TIME STATUSAccording to guidelines from the Ministry ofTraining, Colleges and Universities, a full-timestudent is one who is enrolled in at least 70 per cent of the student contact hours (or two-thirds of the courses required) for the approved program in a given semester.

Students enrolled in greater than 100% of agiven semester of an approved program willbe charged for the additional courses taken.

International students must enrol as full-time students. In special circumstances,they may take a reduced course load and stillbe considered full-time students.

TRANSCRIPTSThere will be an $8 charge levied for eachofficial transcript you request from theEnrolment Services Office. All students willreceive one free official transcript upongraduation.

HOW MUCH WILL COLLEGE COST?As a general guideline, single students living ontheir own can expect to spend about $9,500 peracademic year on living expenses, tuition, booksand supplies. Your expenses will vary dependingon your circumstances. Married students withdependants, for example, will have higher livingcosts than singles living at home.

You can get a good idea of your own financialpicture by creating a realistic list of yourresources and expenses. Your list of resourcesshould include sources of income such as:summer jobs, savings, contributions fromparents, spouses or other family members, andmoney you can earn working part time whileyou’re in school.

Your list of expenses should include collegecosts (see fees, page 16), as well as room andboard, transportation, clothing, laundry,personal care and entertainment.

If you find your estimated expenses are greaterthan your resources, your next step is to lineup the financial aid you need.

ONTARIO STUDENT ASSISTANCEPROGRAM (OSAP)This government-sponsored program is themajor source of financial assistance for post-secondary students. OSAP funds are intendedto supplement your own resources in meetingthe costs of your education. In addition, theassistance you’re eligible for varies accordingto program length and whether you’re single,married or have dependants.

In addition, each plan has its own particularrequirements and qualifications; when you visit the Student Financial Services office, we’llmatch you with the plans that meet your needs.

You should apply early for financial aid – nolater than July 1st – to be sure funds areavailable when you start classes in September.Additional information can be found onOSAP’s website at osap.gov.on.ca.

CANADA STUDY GRANTSole-support parents and married studentswith dependent children may be eligible toreceive a Canada Study Grant for Studentswith Dependants of up to a maximum of$3,000 per academic year. Your eligibility isautomatically calculated at the Ministry whenyour OSAP application is processed.

CANADA ACCESS GRANT FORSTUDENTS WITH PERMANENTDISABILITIES (PD)Qualifying students with permanent disabilitiesand demonstrating high financial need willautomatically be considered by the Ministry ofTraining, Colleges and Universities on behalf of the Government of Canada for grantfunding up to a maximum of $2,000.

CANADA ACCESS GRANT FORSTUDENTS FROM LOW INCOMEFAMILIES (LIF)Qualifying first-time, first year students from lowincome families demonstrating high financialneed will automatically be considered by theMinistry of Training, Colleges and Universities onbehalf of the Government of Canada for grantfunding up to a maximum of $3,000.

ONTARIO STUDENT OPPORTUNITY GRANTStudents who have a Canada Student Loangreater than $7,000 for a two-term academicyear will receive a grant for the amount abovethe $7,000 (subject to maximums), if youcomplete your program of studies and after

the Ministry has verified with Revenue Canadathe income information supplied in connectionwith your OSAP application. The Ministry hasimposed an academic progression standardrequiring that all full-time students must passa minimum 60 per cent of their full-time courseload to be eligible for this grant. If youwithdraw or stop attending classes before youcomplete your academic year, you will not beeligible for an Ontario Student OpportunityGrant. This grant (previously called loanforgiveness) is paid directly to your serviceprovider by the Ministry after all criteria is met.

ONTARIO WORK STUDY PLAN (OWSP)OWSP provides on-campus, part-time work for students receiving OSAP and who needadditional financial assistance. It’s aimed atstudents whose financial needs can’t be fullymet by other OSAP plans, or those who wantto reduce the amount of their student loans. Ifthis fits your situation, ask one of our financialaid specialists for information about OWSPopportunities.

BURSARIES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIESThese bursaries (grants that do not have to berepaid) provide financial assistance to studentswho have special educational expensesbecause of a disability. It supplements theregular OSAP loan plans and ensures thatstudents with disabilities do not have to carryextra debt to cover their special expenses. Ourfinancial aid specialists can help you arrangefor this bursary on request.

ONTARIO CHILD CARE BURSARYStudents with children can get assistance withchild care costs through this bursary (a grantthat does not have to be repaid); if you havethree or more children under 11 years of agerequiring child care costs. The bursarysupplements the regular OSAP loan plans andensures that students do not have to carryextra debt to pay for those child care costs.Our financial aid specialists can help you makearrangements.

ONTARIO SPECIAL BURSARY PLANThis bursary encourages financially needystudents to pursue, for the first time, part-timepost-secondary studies. This bursary is alsoavailable to full-time and part-time studentstaking academic upgrading or trainingprograms that will enable them to advancetheir employment-related skills.

Hundreds of scholarships, awards andbursaries are available to college students.Most are based on the academic standing youhave achieved in high school or college, andused to help you continue in your program. Inmany cases, awards or scholarships recognizestudents in a particular field.

Scholarships are confirmed annually. OurStudent Financial Services office maintains acomplete listing of current scholarships; awardsand bursaries open to students, along withapplication forms. Check the office bulletinboard, Progress Campus, room C2-06, forannouncements on available scholarships andawards.

Approximately 90 per cent of the scholarshipsare awarded automatically in recognition ofacademic achievement and college activities.Others involve an application process.
