Undergraduate Admissions ProceduresWith nearly 6,500 students, Clarion University offers world-class academic challenges and the kind of support and personal attention that allows you to thrive. Our beautiful 128-acre campus is nestled in the rolling hills of western Pennsylvania. With more than 100 academic degree programs and 140 student organizations, Clarion provides opportunities where you can become involved in projects and student activities that will challenge and inspire you from your first semester to graduation. The first step in experiencing what Clarion University can offer you is applying to the university.

Clarion University reviews applications, beginning in July, for the following Fall Semester. Clarion operates on a Rolling Admissions Policy, which means that admissions decisions are made as completed applications are received and until spaces in the fall or spring classes are filled. Students who submit an application, with the required credentials, normally receive a response within 5-10 business days. 1. Apply online at www.clarion.edu/admiss and save $5, or complete the attached paper application.

If completing the paper application, please type or print clearly and select your major from the list provided. The application fee for online submission is $35 and paper submission is $40. • An essay and recommendation letters are optional for students, but are encouraged since they can help

strengthen your application for admission.• We encourage you to visit the campus, but interviews are not required for admission to the university. To

schedule a visit, go to www.clarion/admiss or call the admissions office at the number below.

2. Students interested in nursing must apply for admission by december 15 (including high school transcript, SAT/ACT scores and college transcripts, if applicable), write an essay explaining why they want to be a nurse, and take the National League of Nursing (NLN) Exam.

3. If you are a high school student, ask your guidance counselor to provide an official copy of your high school transcript to Clarion University.

4. Clarion University accepts either the ACT or SAT test scores. Use our code number (ACT: 3698 SAT: 2649) to send an official copy of your test score report to Clarion University. SAT or ACT scores may also be provided on the high school transcript.

5. If you are a transfer student, please have an official academic transcript sent from all schools you have attended, in addition to the application form and high school transcript.

How do i apply for a Federal direct loan? • All students who file a FAFSA may borrow through the

Federal Direct Loan program regardless of financial need or credit history.

• A student applies online at www.studentloans.gov and completes both the master Promissory Note and the Loan Entrance Interview Information.

• Dependent students with 0-29 credits earned may borrow up to $5,500 per year. An independent student with 0-29 credits earned may borrow up to $9,500 per year.

• A student taking six or more credits per semester is eligible for a Federal Direct Loan but the amounts are lower.

• Current interest rate is 4.66 percent and is fixed and set by the federal government each year.

How do i apply for a Federal Perkins loan? • A student must have a FAFSA on file.

• The federal government mandates that the federal Perkins Loan is awarded to the neediest students first.

• An eligible student can receive up to $2,000 per year.

• Current interest rate is 5 percent and is fixed and set by the federal government each year.

• There is no interest but there is a $50 sign up fee.

• The PHEAA is a need-based grant and is not repaid.

• Amounts range from $0-3,414 per year (2014-2015) depending on financial need determined by the FAFSA.

• A student must register for six credits or more per semester to be eligible. Amounts are lower for part-time students.

• Bachelor degree-seeking students have a total of eight semesters of eligibility and associate degree-seeking students have a maximum of four semesters of eligibility regardless of full-time or part-time status.

• Out-of-state residents should contact their own state grant agency to see if they are eligible to use their grant to attend a Pennsylvania university.

does the university offer scholarships? • The campus offers a variety of different scholarships

normally based on high school performance (GPA, SATs) as well as community involvement.

• A student’s major also can be a determining factor.

• Applications for student scholarships are normally due February 15 each year.

What happens if my family’s financial situation changes during the school year? • Contact the Office of Financial Aid to request a

2014-2015 Special Condition Form. This two-page form collects information regarding your family’s 2014 finances for reconsideration of your federal and state grant eligibility.

Are there additional federal loans available? • A parent can apply for the Parent Loan for

Undergraduate Student (PLUS). Parents apply at www.studentloan.gov.

• It is based on the creditworthiness of the parent who is signing up for the loan.

• Payment can be deferred until the student graduates from college.

• If a parent is denied the PLUS loan the student’s Federal Direct Loan can be increased by $4,000 per year.

• The total amount a person is able to borrow is based on how much financial aid the student is already receiving and the university budget amount which is set by the Director of Financial Aid each year.

• Current interest rate is 7.2 percent and is fixed and set by the federal government each year.

What if federal and state financial aid is not enough? • Alternative loans exist when federal and state aid is

not enough.

• Alternative loans are based on creditworthiness.

• The student can be the borrower but will normally need a creditworthy co-signer.

• Alternative loans can be researched at www.clarion.edu/252313/.

How do you continue to receive financial aid throughout your college career? • A student needs to complete a FAFSA every year

in order to continue to receive financial aid – even loans.

• A student must also complete a minimum number of credits each academic year to continue to receive financial aid for the following academic year.

• All students (full-time, part-time, undergraduates, graduates, post baccalaureates, etc.) must successfully complete at least 67 percent of attempted credits cumulatively. “Cumulatively” means that all periods of enrollment will be counted, regardless of whether the student received aid. This includes the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Direct Loan, the Federal Perkins Loan.

• A full-time student must complete 24 new credits during the academic year in order to receive their PHEAA grant the next academic year. Part-time students need to complete all the credits they register for each year to continue to receive the PHEAA grant for the next academic year.

Senior or recent graduates of Franklin or Rocky Gove High School, attending Venango or Clarion campus, are given preference. The cost for 2013-14 is $345 per class plus a $50 nonrefundable one-time records fee for new Dual Enrollment students. This cost covers only one three-credit course per term. Additional courses are available at full cost. Each student is responsible for the cost of book(s) for their course(s).

the dual enrollment program at Venango College of Clarion University admits selected high school students to Clarion University on a part-time or full-time basis for summer, fall and/or spring academic terms. The course work provides depth and a greater challenge than their high school curriculum and an early start on earning a university degree.

Admission CriteriAAdmission of high school students to the Dual Enrollment program at Clarion University is evaluated according to the following criteria:

general track1. Completion of freshman year in high school.

2. Completion of the Dual Enrollment Application.

3. Official transcripts that document enrollment in the academic or college preparatory program in high school while achieving the following: 3.0 cumulative grade point average (85 percent) or top 20 percent of the class, SAT of at least 950 (CR&m) or ACT of 20. Students can also be considered with a PSAT of 95 or PSSA or keystone Exam scores of Proficient or Advanced (at least one score must be advanced) in math and Reading/Language Arts.

HigH QUAlity living Venango College is scenically situated on 65 acres of wooded hillside overlooking the Allegheny River in the city of Oil City. Oil City offers a congenial, small-town setting for students and boasts a variety of local restaurants, antique shops, bike trails, outdoor activities, cultural opportunities, and more.

The Clarion University Foundation, Inc. student apartment complex at Venango College includes two- and three-story buildings with two apartments on each floor. Each apartment houses four students. Students enjoy a private bedroom and a semi-private bathroom and share common kitchen, laundry facilities, and living and dining areas. michael F. and Joyce I. Hughes Hall features a community center where students of all buildings can gather for studying or socializing.

Student apartments are available for 10- or 12-month leases. Leases include high-speed Internet access, cable television, local phone service, and all other utilities.
