Run the Pyongyang Marathon

When I turned 15, my parents sent me alone on a one-month trip to Ecuador, the country

where my father was born. This was tradition in our family—for my parents to send their

first-generation American kids to the country of their heritage. That month in Ecuador did

more for my character, education, and sense of identity than any other experience in my

early life.

During my travel, I often did not have access to hot water, Internet, air conditioning, or

even basic electricity. I slept in rooms with spiders, mosquitos, and bedbugs. I rode on

public transportation that rarely left on time and often broke down suddenly in remote

areas. But these trips didn’t only teach me to appreciate what I had; they also moved me

to consider why I had it in the first place. I realised that much of what I thought was

necessity was, in fact, luxury and began to reali se how easily I could survive with much

less.

This past summer, I volunteered as a programme leader for Global Glimpse, a nonprofit

organisation that takes American high school seniors on three -week trips to Nicaragua, the

Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. My students—who came from different socioeconomic

backgrounds—visited local museums, cultural centers, and businesses, learned about fair -

trade business practices, and volunteered at local nonprofit organisations. They milked

goats and carried wood on their backs to experience a day’s work as a local farmer . They

spent an afternoon visiting the city dump where families work sorting through the rubbish

to gather recyclable materials to make US$1 to US$2 a day. They also learned about the

U.S. involvement in Nicaraguan politics, listened to stories from locals whose lives were

changed because of political problems. Many of my students admitted that they had not

once learned about Nicaraguan history or culture in their 11 years of education.

American culture, business, and politics might change if more young people forgo a

comfortable vacation and instead choose a genuine travel experience.

Travelling green takes a little extra effort at first, but those extra steps can enhance every trip you take. Here are tips for being an environmentalist on the road and making travel better for everyone.

Choose a green hotel – Look for certified green hotels that use renewable energy, recycle, use environmentally friendly cleaning products and offer options for guests to make an impact (such as not having the sheets changed every day). There are several certification programmes for green hotels – for example, Green Key Global, Green Globe International, Green Seal and EcoRooms & EcoSuites. Staying in smaller, locally run hotels is often the greenest method to make your stay environmentally and socially responsible, as well as bring a more direct boost to the local economy.

Use public transport, bike or walk – Using public transport or travelling on foot or by bike can cut your environmental impact and allow you to meet local people plus experience the culture in a slower way. Instead of renting a car, hop on a local bus; take a walking tour or view the countryside by bike. For long distances consider trains, which allow you to see the scenery outside the windows while meeting locals at your seat, the cafeteria or lounge areas.

Eat locally sourced food – Support a country's farmers, get a more authentic taste of the cooking and cut your carbon footprint even more. Look out for restaurants advertising local produce or, if that’s not possible, eat local dishes at small places that will most likely use what’s produced nearby. Whatever you do, don’t eat endangered species like turtles or rare fish.

Know when, and when not to volunteer – We all want to help, but take the example of Cambodia, where so many travellers wanted to volunteer at orphanages that fake ones were opened to make money. In general, places that involve animal welfare or the environment are good volunteer opportunities. Of course there are all sorts of organisations doing incredible humanitarian work; just be sure to do your homework before donating your time and money.

Do your homework on any tour involving people or animals – It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a tour involving a native tribe or exotic animals but stop for a minute, think logically and ask questions before you support a travel company that may be doing harm. Just because an experience is offered, promoted and everyone else is doing it does not mean it will benefit the locals.

Leave a light footprint – Take simple steps such as not getting your sheets changed daily at your hotel, taking short showers, keeping air-con use to a minimum and turning off lights when you don't need them. Research your destination on the Internet before leaving to find out if there are water shortages, how energy is produced, and if there are any resource issues to be aware of.

Don’t dump your stuff – The things you leave behind could remain in a landfill for literally hundreds of years after you’re gone. Pack your rubbish and take it home. The exception is clothing and items that may be of use to local people – these should be donated to local charities to reach people in need.
