estudo. Recolheu-se informação sociodemográfica (sexo, idade e a faculdade a
frequentar), antropométrica (estatura e peso), de estilo de vida (prática de atividade
física e consumo de pequeno almoço) e de frequência alimentar. A adesão à DM

Abstract
Introduction: The university population is a vulnerable group since in this period of
their lives they begin to take responsibility for their food and to consolidate their
food-related behaviors and healthy lifestyles. Young Portuguese eating habits are
moving away from the Mediterranean Diet (MD).
Objective: Evaluate the adherence to the MD in a university student sample and
relate it with the sex, age, faculty, Body Mass Index (BMI) and breakfast
consumption.
Subjects and methods: The study included 52 students who accepted to
participate in the study. Information about sociodemographic data (sex, age,
faculty), anthropometric data (height and weight), lifestyle data (physical activity
practice and breakfast consumption) and food frequency was collected. The MD
adherence was calculated using the Mediterranean Diet Serving Score based on
the last recommendations from the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid.
Results: The median of the score obtained in the MDSS was 8 (5,00). Statistical
differences were found between the students who adhere and those who don’t to
the variables “BMI” (p=0,007) and “Breakfast Consumption” (p=0,031).
Conclusions: This study suggests a similar adherence to the MD to the one found
in other studies, despite being low (53,8%). This fact must be faced as a priority to
future interventions, not only for the health benefits inherent to this dietary pattern
but also because it’s considered part of the country’s cultural heritage.

Score (MDSS)(35). O MDSS é baseada na Pirâmide da Dieta Mediterrânica(19, 22). A
Tabela 1: Mediterranean Diet Serving Score(35)
ajudar a prevenir doenças crónicas justificariam a intervenção junto deste grupo
