THE HISTORY OF

Adelphic Union Lodge No. 14 enjoys the distinction of being one of a number of the Lodges in

the Prince Hall Masonic History with over one hundred years of existence.

A Charter was duly issued to Adelphic Union Lodge No. 7 on the 11th day of May 1863, A.L.

5863, by the United Grand Lodge of the State of New York. The Charter was signed by the

M.W.G.M. Patrick H. Reason, D.G.M. Jonas H. Townsend, S.G.W. Peter W. Ray, J.G.W. John M.

Thomas and John R. Porter, Grand Secretary. This Charter empowered the Lodge to admit,

enter, pass and raise Free Masons according to the ancient usage and customs of the Craft,

within the City of New York.

In its illustrious history, many landmarks have been established in perpetuating the ideals of

Free Masonry among men of color in this Masonic Jurisdiction. On the 18th day of December

1878, the present Grand Lodge which grew out of the consolidation of the United and National

Compact Grand Lodges re-warranted Adelphic Union with Brother John Rogers as Worshipful

Master. The original Grand Lodge Charter bears the notation "Cancelled 4th December 1879".

The records show that the designation No.7 ceased and the present No.14 came into being after

1878.

On or about January 14, 1881 the recorded minutes show that the Lodge met twice monthly at

835 Broadway and George Harris was the Worshipful Master to November 23, 1885. John R.

Adkins presided as Worshipful Master from November 1885 to November 22, 1890. During this

administration it is noted that there was a fine spirit of cooperation among the few existing

Lodges. There were frequent visits from Boyer No. 1, Hiram No. 4, Celestial No. 3, Mt. Olive No.

2, Widows Son No. 11, and Cornerstone No. 37. The visiting brothers then as today took an

active part in working of the various degrees.

AUL 14 has many reasons to be proud of its many achievements. It has cooperated fully in all

phases of Grand Lodge activities, leading the way in many instances where the benefit of the

Craft was involved. One of the most noteworthy achievements is the introduction of men into

the Craft who have distinguished themselves not only in community life but have brought

distinction to the Craft; men who have risen in ranks from the Entered Apprentice to the

honored office of the Most Worshipful Grand Master.

Page 7: Adelphians 2010

ESTABLISHEDMay 11, 1863 We are justly proud of three advancing to the Grand East and the appointment of an Adelphian

to the position of honorary Grand Master. The choice by the rank and file of the Craft of these

leaders from Adelphic Union attests to the love and confidence that is held for us, and we are

appreciative of this action of the brethren. Past Grand Master Edward T. Sherwood for three

years (1930-1933), Past Grand Master Dr. Charles H. Griffin (1966-1967), Honorary Past Grand

Master Murray Wilkerson, and Past Grand Master Louis Fair, Jr., who led the Craft for ten years

(1942-1951). During which time our present Prince Hall Masonic Temple was obtained through

his ingenuity and hard work. Noteworthy also was P.G.M. Fair’s efforts in obtaining Roscoe as

our Masonic Resort in upstate New York.

Adelphic Union No.14 has several times participated in community activities which were of a

worthwhile nature. We hold a life membership in the NAACP; developed a partnership with New

York Cares to provide ongoing community service projects throughout New York City; maintain

a relationship with Exodus Transitional Community Inc. where we provide business attire and

job training skills for the formerly incarcerated; support L&A Academy located in Accra Ghana

with school supplies and much needed mosquito nets; and many other causes the Brothers of

Adelphic Union Lodge No. 14 participate in.

The Lodge is embarking upon a very promising future in continuing its endeavor to increase the

Universality of the Craft. In recent months, AUL14 has been fortunate in having initiated a fine

group of intelligent and ambitious young men who are anxious to make a name for themselves in

the Masonic world. As they begin their journey into Adelphianism, we wish for them every

success and may their industrious habits and strict application to business procure for them a

significant place in this Ancient and Noble Fraternity.

Our fervent wish is that the Masonic principles inculcated in the several degrees will inspire us

to greater heights. May the Great Architect of the Universe forever continue to guide our efforts.

Adelphic Union...where Masonry happens!

Many incarcerated individuals believe that once they

leave their state of bondage, their problems are

over. Yet in truth, they will more likely be struggling

with financial, family, and social issues before they reach full reintegration into mainstream

society. The concept for Exodus was initiated in the 1970s by a group of inmates at Greenhaven

Correctional Facility who recognized prison life was not adequately preparing inmates to succeed

on the outside.

Julio Medina, one of the members of the Exodus group, realized time and again he would see

recidivism plague the most well-intentioned individuals – men whose only dreams were to make

an honest living, reconnect with their children, and even pay taxes. The story remained constant

and these former inmates were faced with the inability to find and maintain employment; which

made them feel like burdens on their families. Despair and hopelessness set in, which led to drugs,

crime, and eventually back to prison.

Julio opened Exodus Transitional Community in East Harlem to help formerly incarcerated

individuals. The Exodus service model is based on the understanding that success in different

areas of our participants‟ lives is interconnected. Family problems affect work while more

education increase self esteem and influences family life. Participants of the Exodus program

achieve their goals in different areas of their lives by creating a concrete plan of success.

Exodus‟ success at meeting the needs of formerly incarcerated individuals has led to national

attention and recognition. In fact, Exodus Transitional Community became the signature program

for the White House faith based post-release initiatives.

Alton G. Roundtree is a 33° Mason. He is Past Master of Redemption

Lodge No. 24 in Washington, D.C., a member of Jonathan Davis Consistory

No. 1, Mecca Temple No. 10 (Shriners), Mt. Vernon Chapter No. 1 (Holy

Royal Arch Masons) and Redemption Chapter No. 14 of the Order of the

Eastern Star.

R.W. Roundtree has held a number of positions in the Prince Hall Lodge of

the District of Columbia, including: Vice Chairman of the Prince Hall

Recognition Committee, Computer Systems Officer, Director of Public

Relations, Chairman of the Information Management Committee, Director of the Computer

Training Center, Assistant Grand Secretary and Editor of the Prince Hall Masonic Digest.

Errol R. Allen has been a member of AUL14 since 2008. Serving

as Senior Deacon this year, Errol was tasked to lead the degree

work for each degree as well as mentor many of the new AUL14

brothers. His dedication to Masonry, study of the ritual and Errol‟s

love for his Masonic brethren has been stellar and an example to

Masons everywhere.

In Brother Allen‟s own words…“the exact date of my Masonic

journey can‟t be pinpointed, perhaps it was upon discovering my

father was a Mason since his early twenties, or maybe it was my

fascination with the Square & Compass and search for it's meaning.

It was my good fortune to have met Past Master Clifford Garvin, my sponsor. We met at Long

Island College Hospital where I work as a radiation therapist. PM Garvin had a certain air about

him that led me to ask, „are you a Mason?‟ His answer, though semi-evasive, led me to believe that

he was an enlightened man. I sought his recommendation and the door of Masonry was opened to

me. I was initiated November 25, 2008 , passed January 27, 2009 and raised to the sublime degree

of Master Mason, February 24, 2009.

To the WM, PMs, Wardens and Brethren, it is a absolute pleasure and honor to know and be a part

of your lives. There is no greater honor than to be called your Brother. Adelphic Union Lodge #14

has exemplified the meaning of friendship and brotherly love. It is for that reason I am proud to be

selected the AUL #14‟s 2010 Master Mason of the Year by my Brothers. In receiving this award

my admiration and respect goes out to all who have gone this way before me; my welcome and

love to all who choose to come after.”

2010 service to the craft award . . .

Gene A. Edwards, Jr. was raised in AUL14 on October 25, 2008

and a few short months later he stood in the East and conferred his

first degree. In two short years he has served the Lodge as Junior

Deacon in 2009 and Junior Warden in 2010. Brother Edwards has

conferred three separate degrees upon worthy brothers and even

did so flawlessly an hour after eulogizing his beloved father.

A leader in the education of both newly raised AUL14 classes,

Brother Edwards has been there for each class‟ individual, spiritual

and Masonic growth. Most recently, he conferred the First Degree

upon 22 worthy brothers and guided them for over six months. While at refreshment Gene has been an unparalleled leader of the Craft performing his tasks above

and beyond the call of duty. Brother Edwards tireless love of the Craft, dedication to the Ritual and

its many nuances has quickly become his calling card. Adelphic Union Lodge #14 salutes Gene

and we are honored to call him Brother.

Worshipful Master A message from

Greetings and welcome invited guests, Brothers and Sisters

of the Order and our distinguished honorees! The Great Architect of the Universe has seen it fit to allow us to convene this evening to celebrate the accomplishments of Adelphians and those in our community who have distinguished themselves during the course of this highly productive year for AUL14.

I invite our guests to visit our Lodge website, to continue learning more about what makes Adelphic Union Lodge #14 unique. We are proud to call ourselves Adelphians; it means

that we hold ourselves to the highest standards of Brotherhood, Community Service and Masonic Education and we will continue to strive each day, month and year to exemplify the high ideals of our venerable institution.

Tonight, as we look back not only on 147 years of greatness, let us take stock in the caliber of brothers AUL14 continues to attract – many of whom have not reached their 40th birthday – and the work our lodge is doing to make a difference in the community. AUL14 is stepping up and making a major impact on Freemasonry as we know it in New York and around the world.

As the year draws to a close and I reflect on the dynamic year we have had, I can smile with joy, but know AUL14 cannot afford to rest on our laurels. For the first time in our history, we initiated a class of over 20 brothers, conducted two successful Masonic Education programs – the Universality of Spirituality and How to Build and Retain your Membership in a New Millennium Paradigm – and in spite of numerous afflictions that sought to attack the stability, health and well being of many of our Lodge‟s members and families, we all understand that we still have a long way to go to continue building on ourselves and our great legacy.

I am proud and humbled to have served as the “Chief Visionary Officer” aka Worshipful Master

of Adelphic Union Lodge #14 this past year. It has helped to make me a better man and Mason,

and I challenged every member in my care to do the same. When I first took the helm of this

great Lodge, I knew full well our Lodge was in the process of a very progressive surge that

would help make us one of the premier Lodges in our jurisdiction. The spirit of accountability,

the respect for square work, education, our true fidelity and love for one another, have all

helped to make Adelphic Union Lodge #14 an awesome Masonic force to reckon with.

Thank you for coming out and for your unwavering support. We truly appreciate you and love

you for it...and please be assured, the best is yet to come!
