Overview of “The Employment Situation”

• The November report showed an overall monthly gain of 211,000 jobs – just shy of the previous twelve-month average of 237,000 per month

• The national unemployment rate remained at 5.0%

• Revisions to prior months:- The September number was revised from

+137,000 to +145,000- The October number was revised from +271,000

to +298,000- That’s a total of 32,000 more jobs than was

previously reported

Employment in November

• Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 211,000 jobs in November, which is below the 12-month average of 237,000

- Unemployment remained at 5.0%, the lowest since April 2008

- The number of long-term unemployed was little changed at 2.1 million

- Labor participation rate was unchanged at 62.5%

- Discouraged workers in November was 594,000 – virtually unchanged

- Average hourly payrolls rose four cents, to $25.25, following a nine cent increase last month. These figures have risen 2.3% over the year

• United States private sector jobs increased during November, generating over 197,000 jobs

- Highest increases in:

• Construction

• Professional and Technical Services

• Healthcare

• Food Services and Drinking Places

• Retail

- Biggest losses in mining and information

State & Regional Report – October 2015

• State and Regional unemployment rates were little changed in October

• The employment rate decreased over the month in 32 states, plus the District of Columbia, while three states saw a higher employment rate, and 15 states had no change. Over the year, 47 states and the District of Columbia have reported increases

- The largest significant job gains in October 2015 were in California (+41,200), Florida (+35,200), and Ohio (+30,800)

• Year-over-year, 43 states and the District of Columbia have seen an increase in employment

- Idaho (+3.8 percent), Utah (+3.5 percent), and Nevada (+3.4 percent).
