FEBRUARY 1981 Page 2 FOCUS ON THE BRIARS

PRESIDENT'S NOTE

As the Club enters its 63rd year I think it appropriate that we re-affirm the Club's basic objectives.

Firstly: As a sporting Club our primary aim is to assert and maintain a leading role in the various sports in which we participate.

Secondly: To encourage amongst all members that being a Briar means a willingness to readily become involved in the Club's activities and administration.

Thirdly: To make responsible use of the Club's assets to provide a sound financial base for the Club's current and future sporting activities.

and Fourthly being aware of the above, enjoy ourselves on and off the field, ensuring the Briar'sspirit and camaraderie continue.

We have the challenge of development and completion of the Elliott St. Ground at Belfield by March 1982. To date some $10,000 has been granted or loaned by 54 members young ana old. Our target by December, 1981 is $50,000.

If you are among the 395 members who have not made a contribution please write us a cheque now. It will be a development you will be proud of.

Just a reminder. Funds may be given as

(a) A gift to the Club

(b) As an interest free loan.

Cc) As a debenture receiving 8% interest p.a.

Finally, under the capable hands of Ian Duncan the Club bar will open Monday - Friday at 5.15 pm with of course the odd snack. We look forward to seeing you. Come and have a beer with Dunc.

A happy and prosperous year to all members .

JOHM EDMONDS.

SQUASH The Spring 1980 Competition drew to a close in November, with Briars improving quite

a bit on the previous competition. Our B3 side, comprising Ron Churcher, Frank Mandile, Pat Jones, Jim Walsh Cc) and Robert Bedic, had a close win over minor premiers, Fairfield City. We also had 2 teams, A3 and B4 in the grand finals but unfortunately they were not able to produce the necessary form on the night.

The B3's win signalled the start of quite a celebration, which lasted till the wee small hours, with~plenty of bubbly and sundry booze being drunk. The effects of this were' evident the following day with all the participants digging into their flexi or sick leave.

One noticeable example of this was the captain of the losing A3 side, (who shall remain nameless). Somehow or other he managed to sleep through the Annual General Meeting which was held on the folowing night. Didn't even get to the meeting on time to receive his Doug Vanderfield trophy.

We are now preparing for the Autumn 1981 competition which will start in the middle of February. Unfortunately, as was the case last year, we have lost a great number of our more experienced players. Our top side has left with the exception of one player. We will however, still be able to put together a very strong Al side as our top team.

It still lDoks as though we will be entering 8 teams adding a low grade team. This is the chance for other club members to enter the night time sporting ranks.

Club Champion for 1980 is Geof Bevan. Geof won a hard fought victory over George Kozis in the final. Congratulations Geof hope you can make it back for next competition.

A general meeting is being held on Tuesday 3rd February at 10 pm. All squash players should make every effort to attend this meeting. A social day is being organized for earlj March. This will be another water ski and barbecue at Cliff Priest's famous water side home; more will be forthcoming on this.

Finally, a reminder that competition starts on the week commencing 16th February, so get into training, its not far away.

HOCKEY 1981 is not only the start of another decade, but ~ ~mportantly what could be the

end of Hockey for the Briars. The tasks for the Hockey committee and players this year are:-

1) Obtain 4 junior teams by April 11th or face immediate relegation; 2) Recover from the massive financial deficit of last year, plus meet the increased

expenditure of the coming season; 10% on S.H.A. fees, 3 additional teams and equipment, with increasing fees.

3) Contribute to Club activities and attendance at Club; and 4) Face the possibility of relegation for 1982 if we finish 9th or 10th in the Club

. Champ ions hip • Bill Hooker has been co-opted onto the Committee this year to mastermind our

financial revival. Mike Sterry has committed himself to finding, coaching and organizing the 4 junior teams. Obviously Bob, Mike and Bill can't do it al1,. It is up" to every Hockey player to commit himself to Hockey this year totally. This is the year for TOTAL COMMITTMENT. .

Indoor Hockey has already started this year. Twenty players are getting the training needed by playing. If any Hockey player is interested in playing contact Mike Sterry on 630 7093.

Auburn netball stadium, a new and large stadium, has been booked for Thursday night training starting from 19th March. The competition starts on Saturday 4th April.

Outdoor training starts on Sunday, February 1st at our Elliot Street grounds at 8 am. The training will consist of light exercises and all hockey players are expected to be there.

The Annual General Meeting for Hockey is on Tuesday 3rd February at the Briars at 7.30 p.m. Your attendance is compulsory, if the solutions to the problems we face are to be achieved.

M. STERRY.

FEBRUARY 1.981 Page 6 FOCUS ON THE BRIARS

RUGBY 1981 is not only the start of a new decade, but equally important, the start of a new

and exciting Rugby era for the Briars. With a solid foundation laid by 1980's encouraging performance (3rd Club Championships, Whiddon Grand Finalists and Kentwell/Bourke Finalists) the stage is set for Briars to re-establish themselves as the leading force in the subdistrict competition.

1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6)

The objectives for this year are clearly set down and these are namely: Win Club Championship. (This involves winning Premierships) Create greater involvement and interest at all levels. Upgrade our current attitude and standard of Rugby. Introduce more new players and members. Commence preparation for overseas tours at end 1982. Make 1981 the most enjoyable and successful season Briars have had. -The revival of the Briar's spirit and attitude in recent years has been exemplified by

the re-appointment of the three senior coaches of 1980, i.e. Keith Wearne (Kentwell), Ken O'Brien (Burke) and ·David·Jamieson (Whiddon). Ken will be undertaking the Coaching Seminar Course at Hawkesbury College in Fe~ruary. Last years' hardworking Judd Coach, John Staniforth, is returning to more serious matters of playing- higher grades. Ian Duncan ~former Kentwell Coach and Captain) has offered his services to coach the Judd Cup Team this year and his talents and experience will be welcomed.

Last years. popular Managers, Charlie Williams and David Blair have again volunteered their time and with the welcome addition of Terry Daly, will undoubtedly do a great job.

The committee for this year comprises: Phil England Graeme Johnson Lin~say Call away Rod Smith Bruce Robinson Ian Duncan

Football Chairman. Finance, Registration, Insurance, Statistics . Canteen, Raffles, Field Preparation. Fund Raising. New Members, Bar Roster. Gear and Equipment, Players'Representative and Tours.

The important factor about this year's committee is the involvement of sub-committees and greater co-operation and participation by all players and all officials. To be successful there must be a combined and concerted group effort and it is with this approaGh we will reach our objectives. .

Bruce Robinson has planned and actioned a massive advertising and recruitment drive but his efforts and those of the committee can only bear fruit with your involvement and assistance.

Let's all make 1981 a great ·year for Rugby.

TOUCH FOOTBALL The club has entered two teams in the Western Suburbs Touch Football Association's

competition, which is the second largest competition in NSW comprising 99 teams. Our two' teams were graded in 2nd and 6th Division which was quite a pleasing result

in our first year. At the half way point in the competition, both teams have only had moderate success.

All players generally agree that the style of play in the competition is very much different to that which they have experienced in our pre-season runs at Rothwell. The game obviously is orientated to Rugby League players and most of our players have had difficulty with their defence pattern.

Our first year's results are obviously not going to be staggering but it is hoped that if we continue next year, our efforts will be greatly improved.

One very pleasing aspect of touch is the participation of two squash wiz kids??? Grant Heggarty and Wayne Rastall and half of the clubs Hungarian connection, Sandor 'lovely legs' Kovacs. All three of these great sportsmen have made major contributions to our successes to date.

The competition is due for completion, late February and the finals are played in March.

BAR TRADING REPORT Trading in the club over the Xmas period has once again been disappointing, over the

month of December sales were $1,305 compared with December, 1979 $1,572.69. Over the ensuing month or so the organisation behind the bar will change considerably.

Hopefully, toward§ the end of the year the bar will receive a bit of a face lift which will make drinking at the club that little more enjoyable.

By the end of January it is hoped that a bar roster will be in practice ensuring that the club is opened nightly at 5.15 p .m. L'ight suppers will be served on Monday to Thursday and we are endeavouring to again make Friday nights at the club the enjoyable nights they should be.

As the price of everything continues to rise and the bills start coming in for the ground development, I regret to inform members of the following bar prices t~ take effect from 12th January, 1981.

We are glad to announce that we are now in a pcsition to offer competitive prices for bulk grog orders - this includes wine, spirits and can beer. For the club price contact Ian Duncan 649-1029 (Home) and 233-0777 (Club) .

. You will note on the list above that several o£ the stock items have been ticked. These are the items which we will continue to stock in the future. Those not endorsed will be phased out.

The new prices have been set taking into consideration the recommendation of Thomsons Liquor Guide and also present prices in Public Bars.

The prices for mixers have received particular attention. It has been a long time since you have been able to buy a middie of squash £or 20<;: anywhere outside the club. Schooner glasses have been introduced on a trial basis and carafes and jugs will be available for wine and beer and will hopefully take a bit of pressure off the bar on busy nights.

The question of LA beer has again been brought forward. Presently the demand for LA is not strong enough to even consider the purchase of one eighteen gallon keg per month. The fridge behind the bar will be kept full of the white tinnies for Cookies and Frippy and others.

All Tooheys drinkers will be glad to\l}~~a,x'_'!ilt?:r1 a thorough investigation into 'New' in the club will be made within the next month or so and the findings will be published. Do not despair.
