IMPACT OF DIALOGUES FOR CHANGE
ï Built a U.S./German learning network to explore opportunities and challenges around innovative approaches to civic engagement
ï Increased baseline knowledge and policy dimensions of city plans to create a more productive peer learning environment
ï Inspired participants with information, tools, and techniques to improve civic engagement processes and outcomes in their home communities by providing a forum to give and receive expert and peer advice
ï Inspired participants to envision themselves as leaders and start to establish a framework for lasting change by developing an action plan for city recommendations/projects
DIALOGUES FOR CHANGE TMI strives to empower individuals and organizations. It is our goal to inspire others to mobilize, connect and collectively create positive change. Our work with the German Marshall Fund is a prime example.
THE CHALLENGE
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) promotes transatlantic cooperation and understanding. In 2013 the GMF dreamed of launching a new cityt oc ity peer learning exchange between three German and three American cities. The goal was to create a series of workshops, Dialogues for Change, to promote intercultural understanding and mutual learning across both continents.
WHY TMI?
In an effort to learn from each other about best practices in civic engagement, equity, and inclusion, the GMF sought out TMI for our international experience and expertise in facilitating intercultural understanding. Additionally, our subject matter expertise in diversity, equity, and inclusion meant we could help design the workshops and spur cities to implement an equity lens throughout their various urban development projects.
OUR APPROACH
Expert facilitation was a key to the success of these projects. Designing and leading workshops with people from different cultures and backgrounds can be an enriching experience for all participants, but only if the right environment is created to explore the differences in a productive manner.
TMI created two workshops per year, one in the U.S. and one in Germany. TMI was able to cultivate an environment for city leaders to learn from their peers on both sides of the Atlantic. By working closely with the GMF staff, TMI facilitated dialogues, offered expertise through training, and supported study tours of host cities.
OUR EFFECT
Dialogues for Change is now entering its fourth year in 2017, with renewed funding and support from the federal governments of Germany and the United States. In a time of increasing polarization, the cities and federal governments of both countries recognize that learning to improve the lives of their residents requires direct contact between the people of different countries and cultures. The cities have reported improvements to their projects annually. Those reports have been used to strengthen the programí s success, develop more learning sessions, and attract funding from additional foundations.
