black patients were significantly more likely than white patients to present with late-stage cancer; after adjusting for literacy, the researchers reported a smaller odds ratio that was no longer statistically significant

lower S-TOFHLA scores were related to worse glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and reports of retinopathy and cerebrovascular disease
