A Reveletion, given to John Taylor in Centerville, Utah, 27 September
1886. During this time lhe.first presidency was in hiding due to perse-
ctrtion regarding the principle of celestial marrictge (see section 132)
and their deJiance of the federal laws which had recently unincorpo-
raled the church and made such mariages illegal. Beginning in May
or June of t 886, letters began lo come to President John Taylor frontmany leaclers oJ'the Church, asking him to do something to satis.fy the
Gentiles who were cctnfiscating their property in connection with the
property of the Church. George Q. Cannon sugge';ted Presidenl Taylor
take the matter up with the Lord and decide the next day if a manifeslo
abolishing the practice of plural maftiage and consecration should be
