1 Introduction Colour coding of plant and pipework serves several important purposes which are:

1.1 It facilitates easy identification of contents of pipelines. This is efficient from an operating point of view and can be vital in emergencies such as fire, tank overflows, etc.

1.2 It facilitates training of new employees. With little explanation they are

able to trace all process and product pipelines. It also enables them to identify and locate equipment, easily and quickly.

1.3 As with the regular painting systems, the paint used for colour coding

serves the normal function of protection from atmospheric corrosion, sand, water, etc. of the outside surfaces of pipelines.

1.4 Painting with specific colours makes the painted objects prominent and

attracts attention in case of emergency, thereby promoting safety. 1.5 By presenting a clean appearance, colour coding enhances the goodwill

and morale of the employees. 2. Scope

2.1 This Specification only concerns colour coding of pipelines and services in above ground installations. Methods of application of paints/coatings

and colour finishing are detailed in an Engineering Specification (ES-30.99.37.901), in which the former colour finish ADCO Blue (BS 4800 - 18 E 51) is to be replaced by Light Grey - RAL 7035 on pipework and White - RAL 9010 on vessels.

2.2 This Specification is based upon BS 1710 : 1984 amended 1989,

"Identification of pipelines and services". (This standard should not be confused with colour coding for pipes during construction which is applied

confused with colour coding for pipes during construction which is applied

in order to identify material composition). 2.3 Three methods of identification are included:

- Basic identification colours only - Basic identification colours and code indications - Basic identification colours used in conjunction with an ADCO colour

coding scheme.

Code indications may be applied to the basic identification colours described in 4.1 to give more specific information about the nature of the fluid or the hazard. Code indications shall be:

4.2.1 S afety colours (see table A 6 .2 ) in the form of colour ban din g

- Red for fire

- Yellow for warning - Auxiliary blue in conjunction with green basic colour for fresh water

The safety colours shall be applied as bands 150mm wide if the pipe is painted in the base identification colour. If the base identification colour is applied as bands, the safety colour shall be applied between two bands of base identification colour each 150mm long.
