Family fun for everyone!

The subject of death is treated inconsistently in the Bible, 'though most often it suggests that

physical death is the end of life. This is the case with such central figures as Abraham, Moses

and Miriam.

There are, however, several Biblical references to a place called Sheol (cf. Numbers 30, 33). It is

described as a region “dark and deep,” “the Pit,” and “the Land of Forgetfulness,” where human

beings descend after death. The suggestion is that in the netherworld of Sheol, the deceased,

although cut off from God and humankind, live on in some shadowy state of existence.

While this vision of Sheol is rather bleak (setting precedents for later Jewish and Christian ideas of an underground hell), there

is generally no concept of judgment or reward and punishment attached to it. In fact, the more pessimistic books of the Bible,

such as Ecclesiastes and Job, insist that all of the dead go down to Sheol, whether good or evil, rich or poor, slave or free man

(Job 3:11-19).

RACHEL BARICH

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The saying goes that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Usually we talk

about the weather: as March begins, we still have the blustery cold and winds of winter; but,

if all goes well, by the end of March we are seeing signs of early spring, with its new buds

and warming breezes.

That is a good description of what goes on at TKE in March, too. In March, your TKE

Board and staff begin preparing for the next season, the next fiscal year. We finalize our

budgets for the coming year, preparing the ground that will allow our congregation to grow

and flourish. We begin our calendaring, planting seeds for what will become exciting and

enticing programs, activities, and experiences. And we approve a slate for the Board of

Trustees who will serve in the coming year, selecting the farmers who will nurture these

seeds, tend to the congregation, and steward the congregation throughout the year and into

the next. The slate and budget are then presented to you in May, at our Annual Meeting—time for you as congregants to

survey the fields and confirm that the crops will be good.

March, then, is a busy time for your TKE leadership at all levels, just as our

labor last year led to the many great things going on at TKE this March. We

trust that our labor this year will bear wonderful fruit next year, too.

But as I consider the lion/lamb concept, I also think about the Sanctuary window

that contains the lion and the lamb, the deer and the bull. This window

references an image presented by the prophet Isaiah. In verse 11:6, Isaiah

describes a time when "the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard lie down

with the kid; the calf, the beast of prey, and the fatling together with a little boy

to herd them.”

This is a vision of an age of peace, a time when all creatures forget their

animosities, forget their differences, and come together to share in the world’s

bounty. This is a vision of a very special spring.

Before this unique spring, Isaiah lays out what needs to happen (Isaiah 11:2-4):

“The spirit of Adonai shall alight upon Israel: A spirit of wisdom and insight, a

spirit of counsel and valor, a spirit of devotion and reverence for Adonai. Israel

shall sense the truth by Israel’s reverence for Adonai: Israel shall not judge by

what the eyes behold, nor decide by what the ears perceive. Thus, Israel shall

judge the poor with equity and decide with justice for the lowly of the land.”

As we see throughout our Jewish texts, it is not God who will create this age of peace; it is us. How we interact with each

other, how we interact with our communities and our environments, how we handle the downtrodden in our midst: these

actions are what create a possibility for peace.

March literally brings the hints, the hopes for spring. The work that we do during March lays groundwork for the coming

year. How we do that work—with wisdom, insight, and Jewish values—lays the foundation for peace in our families, peace in

our friendships, peace here at Temple Kol Emeth, and peace throughout our community.

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

NEEDS YOU!

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

“Ask not what your synagogue can do for you, but

what you can do for your synagogue…”

It is that time of the year when we ask for

nominations for the Board of Trustees. Please

don’t wait for someone to nominate you: nominate

yourself! Board of Trustee positions include

finance, facilities, religious school, and others.

If you are thinking about being a part of the

process, or you just want to know what is involved

in being a part of the governance process of TKE,

please contact me; and we can discuss

opportunities to serve. More details will follow in

future Voice articles. But let’s start the

conversation now, to get the right people for the

various Board positions and help our synagogue to

grow and better serve our congregants.

Thank you,

Ben Singer

Immediate Past President

TKE’s commitment to provide housing to homeless

families continues with our next scheduled week in

March. Together with Family Promise of Cobb County

and 13 additional congregations, we continue as a host

congregation during the week of March 3-10, 2019.

All hands on deck as we will once again need volunteers

to prepare meals, to serve as dinner hosts and/or

overnight, and to help with set-up and take-down of the

DLC for our families. Please consider becoming a

volunteer in this most special of mitzvot!

Layla Rose Harrison will become a bat mitzvah on March 9. She is in seventh grade at Mabry

Middle School. Layla is a Black Belt in Karate; she also enjoys playing the violin, acting and

volunteering. She is in the Mabry play, “Beauty and the Beast,” opening the week after her bat

mitzvah. She has a deep love for dogs and volunteers at Canine Assistance with her

grandmother Sue. Layla is an amazing volunteer at Temple Kol Emeth and assists her mother

Bonnie with Team Boobulahs, raising money to help fight breast cancer. Every dollar raised

stays in Atlanta to help local women in need of assistance. Layla has been an amazing

fundraiser, especially during Noshfest. If you are reading this, I am sure you will recognize

her: Layla probably sold you a pink bracelet or cookie. I am blessed and proud of Layla, as she

blossoms into an amazing young lady.

THE LEGACY CAMPAIGN

The Legacy Campaign is off to a great start and continues to gain

momentum. In case you haven't heard, our goal is to pay off the

mortgage, which is approximately $2.8 million. Any funds collected

once the mortgage has been paid off will go into an endowment fund.

To date, we have commitments totaling over $1.65 million, to be paid

over the next 3-5 years. This amount comes from over 40 different

member contributions!

Be on the lookout for more updates in future editions of The Voice and

start thinking about what you can give to support this important

cause. If you have any questions or would like to be personally

contacted, please email Ben Singer at [email protected] or Craig

What Better Way to Spread the Word!

Hundreds of thousands of businesses nation-wide use newsletters to obtain new customers and reinforce existing relationships with their current customers. It is a proven, cost-effective method of advertising that gets noticed by a loyal community-

based audience. Every month members read these materials, and most hold onto them until the following issue is distributed. Advertising in these publications lets you reach desirable customers in your business area. What’s more, it delivers a very positive impression about your business.

We create, produce, and print the ad, all within your specific advertising budget. Since 1972, Liturgical Publications has been at the forefront of communications advertising, currently serving 100,000 businesses on over 3,500 publications. These publications are read by more than 6 million people weekly. We want to make your experience with us both simple and effective. Which is why we’ll not only create your ad, we’ll also change it up to four times a year, absolutely free. It’s one more way we exceed your advertising expectations.

SPREAD THE GOOD WORD ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.For more information on this powerful method of advertising, call:Bill Mackall at LPi today at (866) 651-2111 x6357
