2. EXAMPLE 2: IMPORTING LATERAL LOADS TO AN ADAPT BUILDER MODEL

This example describes how to import lateral loads for level 2 into an ADAPT-Builder model. Models are already designed for gravity loads in ADAPT-Builder, however, the process requires checking the load combination that includes lateral loads. Geometry of a structure is as shown in Figure 2:

FIGURE 2

2.1 Crete An ETABS Output Files for Selected Story Level Only

1. Analyze model in ETABS.

The next step is to create output files. Since you want to import only the lateral loads solution for Level 2 there is no need to output information for all levels. To create ETABS output files that will include information you need to import level 2, you will have to select all components for level 2 and level 3 in ETABS. To do so follow the steps below:

2.2 Create An INP File That Includes Only A Lateral Load Solution Using The ADAPT-Integration Console

This section describes how to create an input file (.INP) containing only lateral loads information for ADAPT-Builder using ETABS txt files.

16. Open ADAPT-IC console.

17. Click Next.

18. Check Import lateral loads and uncheck Import geometry and Import gravity loads.

FIGURE 2.2-1

21. Click Next. 22. From the list of all floor levels select 2 and click on the button

to move it to the List of selected floor levels. Note that this is the only level that you can import to Builder since you did not include information for other levels in the ETABS txt files.

35. The program imports geometry and gravity loads. For lateral loads the

program performs equilibrium and compatibility checks and shows the Lateral Loads Status Check table as shown in Figure 2.3-4. Since the Compatibility check is not performed at this point, some of the loads are not attached to columns or walls. To see these loads onscreen select Visible and click OK.

3. EXAMPLE 3: LATERAL LOAD DESIGN RESULTS IN ADAPT- BUILDER

This example shows moment diagrams and required reinforcement due to imported lateral loads. Lateral load cases are earthquake in X direction (EQX) and wind in Y direction (WINDY).

The geometry of a structure is shown in Figure 3.1.

FIGURE 3.1

Level 2 of the structure, including geometry and lateral load solution, is imported to ADAPT-Builder. Lateral load cases are included in load combinations. Structure is analyzed and designed for two load combinations:

1*LATERAL_EQX 1*LATERAL_WINDY

Builder column forces and unbalanced moment to the slab are compared with ETABS solution.

Results obtained for EQX:

ETABS column forces due to EQX load matches with Builder column forces. The same amount of unbalanced moment is transferred to slab (Fig. 3.2).

Total amount of unbalanced moment that is transferred to the slab, at location of the example column C12, is 248.51+84.63 = 333.14 K-ft

157.27 +152.55 = 309.82 K-ft (ETABS 333.14 K-ft)

Note that the forces in ADAPT-Builder are reported for the section at the face of the column, not at the column centerline where load is applied.

Required reinforcement is as shown in Figure 3.5:

FIGURE 3.5

Results obtained for WINDY:

ETABS column forces due to WINDY load match with Builder column forces. The same amount of unbalanced moment is transferred to slab (Fig. 3.6).

Total amount of unbalanced moment that is transferred to the slab at location of example column C12, is:

182.33+11.01 = 193.34 K-ft

In ADAPT-Builder moment diagrams due to WINDY are as shown in Figure 3.7:

FIGURE 3.7

A detailed Moment diagram for Support line 11 is shown Figure 3.8. The total amount of unbalanced moment at the face of the column C12 is:

7.76 + 87.71 = 175.43 K-ft (ETABS 193.34 K-ft).

The difference is due to the fact that the forces in Builder are reported for the section at the face of the column and not at the column centerline where the load is applied.
