An introduction to Phantom/Standby Power

Page 6: AD- Brand Spara

What is Phantom/Standby Power ?

Almost every electronic devices consumes Phantom power.

e.g. TV, Home Entertainment System, Computers, Mobile Chargers.

Causes:

• 5 – 10% of residential electricity in most countries• 1% of global CO2 emissions

Power drawn by a device when not in use or standby while plugged in.

Page 7: AD- Brand Spara

Standby Power of each product is tiny--just a few watts--but most houses and offices have more than

15 products with standby

Mobile Charger

Page 14: AD- Brand Spara

Consumers are aware of the issue of connected devices continuing to eat power even

when batteries are fully charged. But few realize that this also applies to a small but

measurable extent even when the device is removed while the charger is still left plugged

into the mains.

1.Chargers are always kept

connected to the power socket.

2.Damages Battery and Phone Life.

3.Wastage of Power

CURRENT SCENARIO

Page 15: AD- Brand Spara

Proposed SYSTEM

Spara smart charger has an inbuilt energy management

system that is customized for cellular phones.

PROPOSED SYSTEM

The smart charger determines whether the connected phone is fully charged or whether it is

still charging by using smart sensing technique.

If the phone is fully charged it shuts down the power supplied to it, thereby eliminating all possible

power losses.

If the phone is unplugged from the charger, it

automatically cuts off the power thus eliminating

phantom power wastage.

Page 16: AD- Brand Spara

A

Energy conservation.

Fully automated operation.

No need to turn OFF the charger

manually.

Go Green, without disturbing

the current routine of mobile

users.

Can save up to 97% of phantom power

losses

ADVANTAGES

Increase in life of mobile battery

Page 17: AD- Brand Spara

FEATURES•Individual current/wattage monitoring and sms acknowledgment.

•Scheduling via sms.

•Remote turn on/off facility.

•Generates reports based on power usage pattern.

•Auto cut off when device goes in standby

•Individual manual switches are also provided

•New modules can be added to the strip

•Auto cut off after shut down(Spara)

Data Devices

Page 19: AD- Brand Spara

Assuming that the printer is in stand by mode for the remaining , say, 20 hours. Going by simple calculations : 20hrs x 20 watts = 400 watt hours/day

Printers, Fax Machines and Other Data

Devices are some of the major energy

drainers in offices and homes.

Data Devices remain ON for a majority of the time while they

are used only for a small part of the

day.

Studies have shown that

cumulative use of a Printer is 2 hours in a normal office.

CURRENT SCENARIO

Printer Status Units of Power Consumed

Run-time 1000-2000 watts/Hour

Stand by 20-40 watts/Hour

Page 20: AD- Brand Spara

Printer Turns ON [~ 30 Sec]

Print Command is Given

Turns OFF thus Saving Power.

Prints the Data and waits for 1 min to

check if further prints are there.

• We use the JIT Theory [Just-in-Time] for Data Devices by ensuring they are ON only when required.

• A LAN card has been integrated into the SPARA module , which detects for any print commands issued and turns ON the printer.

• In the case of USB printer, a USB interface card is used which detects for a print command to turn ON the printer.

• The printer can be scheduled so that it remains ON during peak hours and can switch to Spara mode at other times.

• Spara printer module is designed to be used both USB and NETWORK printers.

PROPOSED SYSTEM

Page 21: AD- Brand Spara

ADVANTAGES

Data Devices are not kept ON unnecessarily during Weekends and

After Hours thus increasing their life

span.

Just in Time Usage thus saving huge

amount of power.

Runtime Losses and Standby Power The Biggest Culprit

For example when employees go for lunch, they usually do not turn off their

computers which results in power loss of up to 100 Watts/Hr/computer.

Similarly a majority of employees do not switch OFF their system once the

computer is shut down resulting in Standby Losses up to 10

Watts/Hr/Computer.

Runtime Losses:Takes place due to

negligence of employees.

Standby Power Losses:Occurs when devices are left ON at

the end of the day.

Calculations shows that about 30% of electricity is wasted per year per

computer due to Runtime and Standby Power Losses.

Case Study-1

• Feasibility study and pilot was done.

•A product solution was offered which was a combination of a software and hardware solution.

•The principle behind the Software Solution is the fact that any continues usage of a device would result in a pattern which is a function of probability. AI algorithms can be used to recognize these patterns and predict future trends which in turn would greatly improve the efficiency of the device.

•Hardware solution helps in cutting down phantom power loss’s.

SolutionArea of Engagement

• As per data we were able to obtain 36% reduction in the power consumption due to computers and associated peripherals.

Result

32

Client : The client is recognized as India’s largest private sector power utility, with a reputation for trustworthiness, built up over nearly nine decades,..

The client who is in the power/energy space wanted to explore the possibility of saving power through innovative AI and Hardware solution from their computers and associated peripherals.

Case Study-3

•Feasibility study and pilot was done.

•There was a huge power consumption since computers were left on for remote access everyday even though a remote access was not performed everyday.
