The profitability/success of Telematics depends on the richness of the services portfolio.

  Car related: warranty, upgrade, recall

CRM related: Dealer relationship, Brand Loyalty

  Consumer services: Push & Pull

Services need to share as much as possible infrastructure and software to lower cost

New services have to be installed dynamically, and End-user should be able to subscribe/unsubscribe offered services

Users are nomadic, want the same service in the car, at home, on a PDA.

  Telematics units should be manageable

Lots of issues (privacy, security, driver distraction, ..) are solved when the vehicle clients are "controlled" by a trusted party and policies can be enforced

Policies The Cornerstone of successful Telematics

Can anyone offer any service at any time?

Can any service access any device?

Can any user use any service for free?

Who knows that the user in the car is the same as the one at home?

What if two users use the same car?

How are users notified about new services?

How do we link with legacy applications?
