Installing the Hardware Protection Key

A hardware protection key (also called a dongle) is used to prevent illegal use and distribution of software. The AcuityXpress™ Software USB NetHASP Hardware Protection Key is programmed with one or more AcuityXpress Software licenses and allows those licenses to be used on a network without requiring multiple hardware protection keys. It also permits centralized management of licenses within an organization.

General Setup InformationThe AcuityXpress Software hardware protection key can be connected to any computer on the network that supports USB. Choose a Windows computer that is always switched on and rarely rebooted, such as the MDCStore™ Data Manager database server.

Step 1: Installing the Driver for the Hardware Protection Key

If you install AcuityXpress Software on the computer that will have the hardware protection key attached, the drivers for the hardware protection key are automatically installed with AcuityXpress Software and you can go to Step 2: Installing the NetHASP License Manager. If you will only use AcuityXpress Software on other computers and do not want to install AcuityXpress Software on the computer that will have the hardware protection key attached, you need to install the driver manually. You can download the latest drivers at http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/enduser.asp

Note: If the hardware protection key is installed on a computer using the Microsoft Windows 2003 Server operating system, the dongle is not accessible from client computers running Windows XP. If your client computers are running Windows XP, we recommend that you install the dongle on a computer running Windows XP.

Note: Do not plug the hardware protection key into the computer before you install the driver. Doing so can result in Windows installing the wrong driver.

Network License Frequently Asked Questions1. How does the network hardware protection key work?

There are two elements to a software protection system using a network hardware protection key: the license manager software and the client application. The license manager makes licenses available to the network. The number of licenses available depends on the total number programmed into the hardware protection key and those currently being used by clients on the network. When the client application is run, it searches the network for a license manager and requests a license. If there is a free license remaining in the hardware protection key, the license manager issues this to the client PC. When the client PC exits the application, the license is returned to the license manager and becomes available for other PCs on the network. For example, when AcuityXpress Software is run on a client PC, the AcuityXpress Software searches the network for a network license manager and requests a license. The license manager software allocates a license to each client PC, up to the maximum number of licenses available on that hardware protection key. If there are no available licenses on one hardware protection key, the AcuityXpress Software searches the network for other hardware protection keys. If none are found, the AcuityXpress Software reports to the user that a hardware protection key could not be found.

2. Can network hardware protection keys be combined(for example, 5-seat hardware protection key + 10-seat hardware protection key = 15 seats)?

0112-0150 C 13

Page 14: AcuityXpress™ High-Content Informatics Software

Installing the Hardware Protection Key

AcuityXpress 2 0 Installation Guide_guide.book Page 14 Wednesday, June 20, 2012 10:55 AM

Yes, USB NetHASP hardware protection keys can be combined, on one or more computers.

3. Can a network license be accessed remotely using a dial-up connection?Yes, NetHASP works over a TCP connection. However, the computer that has the network hardware protection key attached has to be accessed remotely, through a secured gateway (for example, a VPN connection) or a hole in the firewall.

4. If the network goes down, can the network hardware protection key be moved to any other computer and used as a single-user license until the server is restored?Yes.

5. Does the hardware protection key track active use, or only whether the application is open (i.e., if a copy of AcuityXpress Software is open but minimized, does it still occupy a seat)? When the application is started, it occupies one seat until the program is closed, so minimizing the program still occupies a seat. If the computer crashes, the network license is still occupied. You must re-open the program on the same computer again and exit the program correctly for license to be returned. If the program does not re-start, running the Remove All and Load All menu commands in the license manager resets all licenses.

6. Is there a way to track which computers are using seats at any time (for example, if someone goes on vacation and leaves AcuityXpress Software running, can we locate the computer using that seat)?Yes. To display the IP address or name of every computer that has a license checked out, run the Aladdin Monitor software on the computer with the network hardware protection key installed, from the Start Menu > Programs > Aladdin directory.

7. What type of computer is required to install a network Hardware Protection Key? Is there a load on resources? The computer that has the hardware protection key installed does not need to be a server. There is no load on the system resources, so you can install it on the MDCStore Data Manager server or you can use another secure computer, if one is available. Because Windows NT does not support USB, the network hardware protection key must be attached to a computer running Windows 2000 or XP.

AcuityXpress 2.0 Software Installation Guide

AcuityXpress 2 0 Installation Guide_guide.book Page 15 Wednesday, June 20, 2012 10:55 AM

8. My MDCStore Data Manager server is running Windows NT. How can I use a network hardware protection key? The database server does not need to be the network hardware protection key server. Install the network hardware protection key and license manager software on another computer running Windows 2000 or XP.

Note: If the hardware protection key is installed on a computer using the Microsoft Windows 2003 Server operating system, the dongle is not accessible from client computers running Windows XP. If your client computers are running Windows XP, we recommend that you install the dongle on a computer running Windows XP.

Running AcuityXpress Software

Creating a Data SourceA data source is an alias to a database that includes information about the database type and therefore the database driver to use. The AcuityXpress™ Software includes a data source wizard that enables you to create a data source to an MDCStore™ Data Management Solution database.

To create a data source

1. Double-click the AcuityXpress Software desktop icon (or select AcuityXpress Software from the Start menu: Start Menu > Molecular Devices > AcuityXpress). The Data Source field is at the top of the AcuityXpress login dialog. If you have an existing AcuityXpress Software installation, you might already have a data source defined, so you do not need to define a new data source if you are connecting to the same database. You can have more than one data source to link to more than one MDCStore Data Management Solution database.

2. To create a new data source, click New Connection.3. Select one of the following: Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle.

In this example, we will use SQL Server.4. From the Computer list, select a computer name. All computers

running SQL Server that are accessible on your network are listed here. Some of them might not be MDCStore databases.

5. Type in your login name and password on the SQL Server installation to which you are attempting to connect, and click Connect.

6. On the Database Name list, select the MDCStore Data Management Solution database on the SQL Server installation that you have selected.

7. In the New Data Source field, type in a data source name. This is an alias for the new connection, so you can name it anything.

8. To create the data source, click Create.9. In the confirmation dialog box, click OK.

The AcuityXpress login dialog appears again, this time with the new data source name.

10. To run the AcuityXpress Software, click OK.

To remove old data sources from the Data Source list in the AcuityXpress login dialog, use the Windows ODBC Data Sources management dialog available from Start menu: Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Data Sources (ODBC) > System DSN.

Connecting to the MDCStore 2.0 Data Manager for the First Time

The first time you connect to an MDCStore Data Manager, if you are connecting to MS SQL Server database, you must use “sa” as a login name or, if you are connecting to Oracle, you must use “system” as a login name. You will then be required to change the passwords on two application-specific roles.Application-specific roles are used in a database to provide additional security to that provided by ordinary database accounts. For example, when a database implements application-specific roles, users cannot access the database through other software, such as the SQL Query Analyzer. They must access the database through the application. The passwords for the two application-specific roles are set only once, and are not required by ordinary users when using AcuityXpress Software. They should be set and recorded by the database administrator.

To connect to the database for the first time

1. Using AcuityXpress Software, log in to the new MDCStore Data Manager.

2. When prompted to change the password for the Everyone role, enter a new password in both the New Password and Confirm New Password fields.

3. Click OK.4. In the confirmation dialog, click OK.5. When prompted to change the password for the Administrators

role, enter a new password in both the New Password and Confirm New Password fields.

6. Click OK.7. In the confirmation dialog, click OK.

2. In the AcuityXpress Setup dialog, select 1. Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine.

3. When prompted, enter a password for the System Administrator account on MSDE. This is a password that you create, so you can enter anything. No other user interaction is required.

Note: The progress dialog can underestimate the time taken to install MSDE. This installation normally takes between 90 and 180 seconds. After the MSDE installation is complete, the Setup AcuityXpress dialog reappears.
