In 2006 South Warwickshire, North Warwickshire, and

Coventry Primary Care Trusts (PCT) merged to form the

Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust.

Merging the PCTs highlighted the need for new management roles, and the new

Trust rightly looked to their existing talent pool for these leaders.

Change from withinWorking with the Trust’s senior management team, Acua developed a programme

that complemented the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework. As a result,

participants were able to map their progress against NHS core competencies,

and this was then combined with Key Performance Indicators linked to service

delivery and performance-related outcomes to make up the full programme.

Acua’s Business Coaches worked on-site with the selected participants, attending

meetings with them and experiencing their role first hand. Workplace delivery of

the programme ensures a strategic and tactical approach.

Delivering the solutionCoventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust is now benefiting from the

improvements its new managers are making, using the tools delivered by Acua to

manage the Trust to increasingly stringent standards.

Measuring success“I used the decision making tools Acua gave me to present a business case for a

new post of deputy manager – I had asked for this before but this time I thought

through what the issues were, analysed the possible options and really made a

case for how the role would have a positive impact on the lives of people using

the service and the staff team. The case was accepted and I am able to report an

increase in patient discharges and a reduction in staff absence.”

Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction

and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and

industrial gas turbines.

As well as being one of the world’s most recognised brands. They provide a full

range of services from design to new engine manufacture. Their customers demand

the supply of reliable, high quality components to keep their machines running.

Caterpillar values its employees and is keen to encourage them to become its

future leaders.

Achieving cultural changeCaterpillar recently acquired a family run remanufacturing business in Rushden,

Northamptonshire. In order to gain best value from its new employees it was

essential that Caterpillar project management methodologies were instilled.

Acua was commissioned to develop Caterpillar’s principles within the Rushden

facility, and create the culture that supports its way of working. To begin this

process we enrolled 33 participants to our unique ‘Capability Building Programme’,

which was further tailored to reflect Caterpillar’s culture and methodology, whilst

developing their most capable employees.

Measuring successAcua’s work at Rushden has had a profound effect on the customer rating of

performance – with improvements in timeliness, shipment correctness and

accuracy of information specifically cited. Reaction time to customer issues

is much reduced and product quality increased.

There is renewed energy at Rushden, with improved employee loyalty and

morale. As well as a considerable reduction in costs, thanks to new business

processes linked to cultural change.

Acua continue to work with Caterpillar, producing leaders of the future.
