Reading for pleasure

Earlier this year, we read the book, Goodnight Mister Tom. A story about a young boy named William, who was

evacuated away from his evil mother in London to the countryside, where he was made to live with a miserable old

man named Tom.

As the story began, we assumed that Tom was a bad match for William and we thought that the pair would never

bond. However, as the story went on, we learnt that William’s mother had treated William poorly for his entire life –

Tom also found out this information and was devastated.

As the days went on, Tom and William became a perfect match, and by the end of the story, William declared his

love for Tom by calling him ‘Dad’.

By the end of the story, William

and Tom were content in the

cottage and everything seemed to

have finally worked out for the

pair of them.

But that is exactly where it ends.

What about the end of the war?

What did William grow up to be

like?

Year 6 Topic – 1st June – 5th June

We have covered some of the most iconic battles throughout time since you started

at Ark Dickens – the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings and the World Wars…

But that got me thinking… what about the knights wielding their swords to slay the

evil dragons? Were they noble men who fought hard to save their fellow humans,

or were they cold blooded warriors who wanted the dragons as a trophy for their

own ego?

The Big Question

Knights were famous for wearing their shining

armour. But, in a world of ever changing fashion…

lets face it, armour is sooooo last millennium!

Year 6 Topic – 1st June – 5th June

During the medieval times, knights would wear armour which often hid their identity

during battle. To resolve this and to generally identify themselves, knights began using

painted symbols on their shields so that they could be distinguished on the battlefield.

Create your coat of arms with these pictures in the different spaces.
