IntroductionHow much do you know about Nottingham? Robin Hood? Brian Clough? Trent Bridge? D.H. Lawrence? Well something you may not be aware of yet, is that by coming to this wonderful university, smack, bang in the middle of England, you are automatically a member of one of the most productive, fun and friendly institutions you could fancy; the University of Nottingham’s Students’ Union.

This guide is to introduce you to what your Students’ Union has for you in the way of Societies and Student Run Services. From Breakdancing to Bell ringing, from product design to opera, from ‘Irish Society’ to ‘Indian Society’ there is, quite literally, a society for everyone. If you’re worried that, whilst our union has the quantity, does it have the quality, our very own ‘Dance Society’ picked up the award for the ‘Best Society 2010’ at the National Union of Students ceremony.

Our beautiful little bubble provides an unrivalled student experience that is for you to take advantage of in so many ways and, here’s the best bit; it’s all run by students.

So have a little read, see if anything immediately catches your eye and make sure you pop along to Freshers’ Fair and meet the students who run these fantastic student groups. It could be you in a year or two.

There is, without a doubt, no better advice that can be given to you than this: give something a go, anything, because it could be the best thing you ever do.

Advocate MagazineAdvocate is the Law students’ magazine. Written and produced by Law students, Advocate is distributed once a semester. Best of all, it’s completely free. Advocate includes articles on a wide variety of topics, from the serious to the light-hearted, and new writers are always welcome.

African Caribbean Society The African Caribbean Society host events that vary from cultural events to club nights and occasional jam sessions providing the opportunity for people interested in Afro-Caribbean culture to socialise.

There’s also the annual ‘Cultural Ball’ held at the end of the academic year featuring Afro-Caribbean food and entertainment.

Africultural Africultural aims to promote African culture to the students of Nottingham. Africultural events are fun and interactive, including Cook-Outs, Socials, a trip to the theatre, language lessons, cooking lessons, drumming lessons, and more.

Ameri-Can SocAmeri-Can Soc is open to any student with a love of all things American and Canadian. Enjoy fun American and Canadian inspired events like Superbowl Sunday, frat parties, Trent river cruises and the epic end-of-year ball. Bring along your friends,

a Red Cup, and get involved!

AmnestyAffiliated to Amnesty UK, Amnesty raises awareness about human rights issues via a weekly newsletter, writing campaigns, stalls, fundraising events, conferences and guest speakers. It’s a friendly, welcoming society which is always happy to see new members.

Animal Rights and Welfare Animal Rights and Welfare is all about celebrating animals – from squirrels to whales, they love them all! Activities include raising funds for global projects, promoting awareness about animal cruelty and, most importantly, having fun in the name of animal affection.

Arabic Society An umbrella society for all Middle Eastern societies at Nottingham. Arabic Society promote Arabic culture and heritage and show students the true beauty of the Arab world. They also offer Arabic lessons and regular socials and parties.

Archaeology Society For Archaeology students or anyone with an interest in the subject, Archaeology Society organises a wide variety of events including paintballing, ghost walks, film nights, trips to archaeological sites, night-time tours of Nottingham and group dinners. It’s a relaxed and friendly society with something for everyone.

Architecture Sans Frontiers ASF organises talks, workshops and events that help to promote socially responsible Architecture within the University. Visiting professionals are invited to pass on their advice and ideas, which are then transferred to hands-on projects such as a primary school mural and greenhouse construction.

Architectural Environmental Engineering Soc A society uniting all students with an interest in Architectural Environmental Engineering. There are lectures and field trips to further members’ understanding of the subject as well as other events including regular socials and sporting events integrating students from all Built Environment courses. The aim is also to establish a firm relationship between the members and the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers.



Art History Society Art History Society gives everyone studying the subject a chance to socialise with their fellow students. Regular events include gallery trips and socials.

Art Soc Art Soc holds weekly life drawing sessions with a model, paper and materials all provided for just £1 per session. There are gallery trips and annual exhibitions and the society works with local art initiatives and artists to put on workshops and give members the opportunity to take part in community art projects.

Asian Cultural The Asian Cultural Society promotes Asian culture and diversity by hosting a wide range of events throughout the year to raise money for charity. The Asian Cultural Society arranges regular events including day trips to Alton Towers and the production of Nottingham’s only Asian Cultural Show.

Bahá’í Society The Bahá’í Society is your local link to the worldwide Bahá’í community. If you enjoy thinking and talking about spirituality, philosophy and creativity, come along to the Soul Café at the Crocus Café in Lenton for discussions fuelled by tea, cake and music.

Band SocBand Soc brings musicians together and helps them to form bands. Members have access to two fully equipped practice rooms on campus and the society puts on regular gigs in Nottingham. Band Soc also arranges recording studio sessions and runs the annual Battle of the Bands competition.

The Bar Society The society for all aspiring barristers. The Bar Society offers a flavour of the bar through a wide variety of events including: trips to courts, Inns of Court and BVC (BPTC) course providers, talks and mock trials. The society also provides guidance for starting a career at the Bar, including information on applying for mini-pupillages.



Bell Ringing Founded in 1958, Bell Ringing is one of Nottingham’s oldest societies. All abilities are welcome, from complete beginners to the advanced. There are weekly practice sessions and the society rings every Sunday at All Saints Church in Radford. Members ring mostly for fun, but they do enter some local striking competitions

throughout the year.

Bike Soc Bike Soc is a society dedicated to students who love the casual side of cycling leaving the racing to the AU clubs! Bike Soc teach people to ride and maintain their bikes, as well as fundraising for charity and organising and attending cycling events.

Bio SocBio Soc welcomes anyone who studies Biological Science or who has a keen interest in the subject. The aim is for people to get to know others in different years and on different degrees through socials ranging from guest speakers to bar crawls. Lots of socials are held in conjunction with other science societies including boat cruises and the annual Science Ball.

Bio Chem For people who like to work hard and play harder, Bio Chem puts on regular socials and informal intra-mural sports events where members can make new friends and have buckets of fun. There are fancy dress bar crawls and the Science Ball is the highlight of the year.

Biz SocGet access to ‘recruitment events with a twist’. Biz Soc was voted Best Departmental Society 2009 and corporate giants compete to meet its members. The huge network provides fun benefits for members including exclusive members’ cards, hoodies, club and bar perks and discounts, free newspapers and sports teams. Membership is free for all Business School students.



Blade SocBlade Soc is the society for anyone who skates, has skated or wishes they could. Barring rain, members meet every Saturday from 1-4pm for slaloming, roller football, roller hockey, free-style skating, tricks and the immensely fun campus skate. Anyone is welcome to come to any sessions and have some fun for free.

Blowsoc Blow Soc is the home of woodwind, brass and percussion at the University of Nottingham. The society runs several fantastic ensembles ranging from Moonlighters Big Band to an award-winning wind orchestra. There are plenty of concerts throughout the year and the extremely active

social calendar includes the annual Christmas dinner, Summer Ball and European tour.

Board GameA fun society where members can relax whilst sipping tea, eating biscuits and playing their favourite board games. There are weekly meetings and new games are always welcome. There’s also a board game league where points mean prizes and there are frequent socials too.

Book Club The society for everyone who loves books. Members meet every month to discuss a range of reads, from contemporary novels to the classics, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere at a café close to campus. There are also regular theatre and cinema trips for those who want to explore the wider cultural scene in Nottingham.

Brazilian and Portuguese Cultural Society The Brazilian and Portuguese Cultural Society hold a number of events throughout the year. There are socials, film nights, dinners, parties (including Carnaval!) and the main event: A trip to Portugal! Everyone is welcome to join in and have some fun, Brazilian and Portuguese style.



Breakdance The Breakdance Society gives you the opportunity to practice breakdancing (or bboying) with other breakers. Beginners are welcome and will be taught the foundations of breakdance so they can develop their own style. There are also performances throughout the year at various events in Nottingham.

Buddhist Society The Buddhist Society is for anyone interested in the faith. There are weekly informal meetings featuring meditation, presentations and discussions as well as regular socials. The society also takes part in interfaith activities and organises charity fundraising activities on campus.

Cake Soc Cake Soc is for everyone who likes to make, decorate and eat cake. There are regular meetings where members bake a variety of yummy treats and learn to decorate them. No experience is necessary and everything

is provided at the chilled, sociable baking sessions.

Capoiera Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art which combines elements of dance, acrobatics, live music and ritual. Developed by African slaves in the 18th century, it’s a fluid and dynamic game which provides an excellent cardio-vascular workout

and increases strength, agility, flexibility and confidence. All levels of ability and fitness are welcome.

Catholic SocietyA society for all Catholics (practicing or lapsed) and anyone interested in the faith. Join in with events that range from the spiritual to the social – prayers to parties! Members come together to build their relationship with God and make friends along the way. There’s a Sunday Mass every week in the Great Hall, Trent Building, at 11am, and everyone is welcome.



Cheese Society A fun-loving society for anyone who enjoys the simple pleasures of cheese – whether trying exciting new flavours or indulging in old favourites. Socials involve eating lots of cheese in a relaxed and comfortable environment where members can chat and socialise.

Chemical EngineeringSociety A society which gives anyone studying Chemical Engineering the opportunity to get involved with subject socials, listen to talks from industry and play intra-mural sports. Events include the mighty Frank Morton and the Chemical Engineering Balls.

ChemsocChem Soc helps Chemistry students make the transition from school to university effortlessly. Every new member is assigned a ‘parent’ to help with any problems – course related or otherwise. There are lots of socials to help members meet people from other years and there are sports teams and guest lectures to get involved with too.

Chess Society Chess Soc has over 60 members ranging from beginner to master. Members can play casual games in a friendly atmosphere, improve their chess through training sessions or test their ability by representing the University in the local league.

China ChinaChina China is a society for Chinese students or anyone with an interest in the country and its culture. There are Chinese-themed events throughout the year including film nights, karaoke, meals, cookery classes and socials. Members who want to brush up on their language skills can take part in the Mandarin Corner language exchange too.

Christians in Sport Love sport? Love God? Christians in Sport is a group of Christians involved with every level of sport. Members meet to encourage one another in prayer and through Bible studies, to pray for their team mates and to play in a way that honours God.

Christian Union (NUCU)NUCU is a Christian Society but it’s open to anyone from any background, denomination or belief who wants to find out more about the religion. All events centre on the Bible in some way but they are open to everyone. UNCU events are an opportunity for all students to grow in their understanding of Christianity alongside other Christians and sceptics.

Civ Soc Civ Soc organises socials for all Civil Engineering students to meet up and have a good time. The highlight of the year is our ball (arranged with another department to even out the guy-girl ratio!). Members can enjoy cheap nights out and discounts on all activities as well as Civil Engineering hoodies.

Classoc A society for Classics students or anyone with an appreciation of all things ancient. Throughout the year there are trips to sites like Hadrian’s Wall and Rome and fun socials including Quasar, film screenings, an Olympic sports day and the now famous toga bar crawl.

CMP SocietyCMP is a society for anyone with an interest

in chemistry and/or physics. There are regular socials including ice-skating, pool tournaments, pub quizes and the annual fancy dress social, Britney Night. It’s a tight-knit society that also provides a support base for those who have questions about their courses.



Comp Soc Comp Soc provides a social environment for computer scientists to get together with trips to places like Bletchley Park, events including Laser Quest and bowling, and the odd good old-fashioned bar crawl. They also arrange academic events and

provide support for international students.

Conservation Society Conservation Society is for all students who enjoy nature and want to help preserve it and who enjoy fun, sociable, outdoor activities. Members get involved with practical conservation work on a weekly basis at various green locations around Nottingham and there are weekend trips each semesater to conservation sites in rural Nottinghamshire.

CSSA (Chinese Students and Scholars Association)The CSSA is the largest Chinese student body in Nottingham and members organise plenty of social events throughout the year, many of which are free. Past events have included a funfair, a cultural day and a sports day, all giving students the chance to find out more about Chinese culture whilst making new friends.

Cypriot Society The Cypriot Society organises parties and other social events so Cypriot students, or anyone with an interest in Cypriot culture, can make new friends and get a taste of all things Cypriot. There are Greek-themed parties, excursions all over the UK and mbuat and tavern nights with delicious Cypriot food.

Dance Society The Dance Society holds classes in street, ballet, jazz/lyrical and tap. There are

advanced and beginners classes for every style of dance. Events include competing at the biggest inter-university competition in England and the sell-out annual show where each class gets to perform their own routine.



Dark CelluloidDark Celluloid is a film-screening society which focuses on alternative, foreign language and classic films. There are weekly screenings, usually with a little social gathering before or afterwards.

Darts Society Darts Society is for everyone and anyone who wants to play some darts in a friendly atmosphere with friendly people. Experience isn’t necessary and beginners are always welcome. Members play every week in a local league and there are inter-university matches throughout the year.

Debating Union The multi award-winning Debating Union is a platform for free speech which hosts public debates and regularly collaborates with other societies. The Debating Union sends teams to

national and international debating competitions in addition to hosting their own school and inter-varsity competitions. Members also have the opportunity to receive training from world-class debaters.

DJ SocWant to learn DJing? DJ Soc provides lessons for beginners from professional tutors. Already a working DJ? DJ Soc will help members to get their name out there and learn more about the art, including latest industry tips, tricks and technologies. There are socials all around Nottingham where members can relax, get to know each other and refine their skills.

Downhill Skateboarding SocietyNottingham might not be blessed with the best waves, parks or mountains, but it does have some of the finest tarmaced hills in the land. Downhill Skateboarding Soc holds regular meetings to bomb the biggest hills and cruise the smoothest parks around. There are plenty of dirty

downhill boards available for members to try out too.

Drum n BassA society catering for all lovers of Drum and Bass music. This society hosts regular socials before heading off to some of the best drum and bass nights that Nottingham has to offer. Members can also look to make the most of the Drum and Bass societies exclusive discounts.

Duke of EdinburghNotts Uni D of E is a fun and sociable way of gaining the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. There are meetings once a week combined with socials, camping, hiking and lots of laughs. The qualification is respected by employers from all over the world and it’s fun and worthwhile too.

Econ SocEcon Soc is one of Nottingham’s longest running and most successful societies. With over 700 members the society has a fantastic reputation for academic, sporting and social events. It’s also a fun social platform for Economics students to

mingle and get access to exclusive career and academic events.

Egyptian Society A fun society for Egyptian students or anyone interested in the country and its culture. There’s a strong support network and a range of cultural and religious events as well as sporting activities and Arabic

language lessons. It’s a friendly society that’s a perfect blend of East and West.

English Society The English society is the ideal way for students to meet other people from their course. There are socials, theatre trips, bar crawls, an end-of-year ball, volunteering projects, a buddy scheme, careers events and sports teams.

Envi Soc Envi Soc is a society for Environmental Science and Environmental Biology students, as well as any other students who are interested in the environment. There are social activities and events, information on volunteering projects, careers advice sessions, and guidance on what to expect from the courses and modules, all topped off with a ball in the summer term.

Environmental EngineeringSociety A society for all Environmental Engineering students or anyone else who’s interested in being environmentally aware. It’s an active society which organises trips to companies of interest, provides information on placements, holds regular socials and enters sports competitions.

Fashion SocietyThe Fashion Society runs fashion-centred events and offers exclusive privileges to members. There’s an annual fashion show giving students the opportunity to model, design and style. There are regular socials including cocktail nights, clothes swaps and a vintage tea party. They also organise discounted trips to fashion events around the country and the fashion capitals of Europe.

Film Making Society Film Making Society provides equipment, training and support to help members produce their own films. Members also attend film festivals throughout the year and there are workshops with professionals from the industry. They also collaborate with other societies to produce documentaries and trailers and students even have the chance to go on a free professional video editing course.



Flair Soc Flair Soc is all about cocktails. Members make them, throw them,

shake them, foam them, invent them, set them on fire and drink them. Flair bar-tending is the art of cocktail making by the flipping, spinning and throwing of bottles, shakers and all other implements that you’d find behind a cocktail bar. Flair Soc teaches these skills and other general cocktail skills (e.g. flavour combinations, techniques and recipes) at twice-weekly sessions and at

weekly workshops in the best cocktail bars in town such as Coco Tang and Brass Monkey. No experience necessary.

French SocietyAn opportunity for French-speaking students and anyone who’s interested in the French language, culture and cuisine to get together at fun socials which include French film nights, visits to local French restaurants and events where everyone gets the chance to mingle, speak French and make new friends.

French and German Bonjour! Guten Tag! The French and German society brings together all students who speak French and German as well as anyone who’s interested in learning more about a foreign culture. There are regular events where students can meet new and exciting people, mixing good old fashioned fun with authentic cultural experiences and even trips abroad.

Game Soc Game Soc focuses on video gaming in all its varieties, from new gen consoles like the Xbox 360 to old skool consoles like the N64. They also host computer gaming events such as LANs.



GeogSocGeog Soc offers students the opportunity to get involved with socials (including a river cruise and paintballing), sports teams, charity events (e.g. a sponsored hitch-hike to Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day), guest speakers (including big names like BBC Coasts presenter Nick Crane), a trip away to a European city, and one of the most successful society balls at the University – the Globall.

Gilbert and Sullivan Society A musical theatre group dedicated to putting on Gilbert & Sullivan performances. There are two shows a year: one G&S favourite, like HMS Pinafore or The Pirates of Penzance, and one that’s written by the members. Students are welcome to get involved on stage or behind the scenes

and there are frequent socials giving members the chance to socialise.

Hellenic SocietyHellenic Society brings together Greek students and those who enjoy the Greek culture, traditions and way of life. There are organised events and activities throughout the year including socials and trips.

Hide and Soc Hide and Soc members meet on campus every week to re-live games from their childhoods and to have some light-hearted fun. Chase, cops and robbers, Bulldog, stuck in the mud and, of course, hide and seek are among the favourites. New members might even add a couple of games to the existing repertoire.



High Soc High Soc is the Students’ Union’s indie and alternative music society. Members can enjoy exclusive gigs, club-nights, quizzes and discounts on various functions in and around Nottingham and get to meet like-minded people, listen to great music and have a dance.

Hindu SocietyThe Hindu Society is open to every student at Nottingham, regardless of their religious beliefs or background. It provides students with support, love and spiritual education and creates a ‘home away from home’ through weekly Aartis (prayers), exciting talks and volunteering and fundraising activities. There’s also the chance to take part in plenty of socials

and to celebrate Hindu festivals like Holi and Diwali.

Hispanic SocietyAimed at promoting Hispanic culture to all those with an interest, the Hispanic society organises numerous events including Spanish lessons, Spanish film nights, meet and greets, and social events.

History SocietyThe History Society brings History students together with social activities throughout the year. There are socials at least once a month and main events are an end of year ball and the November river cruise. Members also get together for trips away and to take part in a scheme teaching history to pupils at local primary and secondary schools. Active types can join one of the five sports teams that play matches against

other societies too.

Ice-SkatingIce Skating Society offers a friendly environment for beginners and experienced skaters alike to make use of Nottingham’s National Ice Arena, take reduced-price skating lessons or just go for a skate with other students. There are themed socials including trips to Nottingham’s outdoor

Christmas skating rink, ice shows and the Varsity ice hockey match.



Indian SocietyThe Indian Society brings Indian students together and adds a taste of Indian culture and traditions to the University of Nottingham. There are a number of events throughout the year including Bollywood nights, film premieres and celebrations of major Indian festivals.

Iranian SocietyThe Iranian Society is a cultural, academic and social society which organises activities related to Iran. Everyone is welcome to join, whether they’re Iranian students, or simply interested in Iranian culture and traditions.

Irish SocietyIrish Society unites all students from Ireland, with an Irish background, or simply those with an interest in the culture. The society organises various socials throughout the year with Irish music, dance and of course the annual celebration of St Patrick’s Day.

Islamic SocietyThe Islamic Society is the voice of Muslim students at Nottingham. There are a range of activities to cater for the physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual sides of

life. These include weekly sporting events, socials, camping trips, iftars and talks.

Italian SocietyThe Italian Society brings together all students with an interest in Italy, its language and culture. Members have the opportunity to improve their knowledge of Italian by interacting with native speakers or can simply come along to the society’s socials and events.



Jain Society A society which brings together all students at the University of Nottingham who are part of the Jain community. There are regular social and religious events, the biggest of which is a trip to the Leicester Jain Centre to celebrate Mahavir Jainto Kalyanak.

The Japan Society Open to all students who have an interest in Japan. There are nights out, free films, BBQs, sushi making, sporting events and lots more. The society has close links with other international societies so things never get boring.

Jazz Society Jazz Society is for people who know a lot about jazz and those who don’t, for those who want to play jazz and those who simply enjoy listening to great music. Members are kept up-to-date about upcoming concerts and there are outings, socials and discounted gig tickets. Members

also team up with a student-run jazz band for jam sessions that anyone can join in with.

Jewish and Israel SocietyJ-Soc is a fun and friendly society for Jewish and Israeli students from all different backgrounds. There are weekly Friday night dinners, club nights, sporting events, celebrations of Jewish and Israeli festivals and talks from educational, cultural and political speakers. Anyone interested in Judaism can find out more about the religion and culture too.

Jumpers for GoalpostsA society for anyone who loves playing football, no matter how good or bad. It’s one of the Students’ Union’s biggest societies and there are kickabouts on campus every week. All playing styles and standards are welcome.



Kazakh SocietyUniting all students with an interest in Kazakh society and culture. There are socials, cultural events, film screenings, musical concerts and trips to other cities, showing members there’s more to Kazakhstan than the Borat movie!

Korean SocietyThe Korean Society is a support network for all Korean students studying at the University of Nottingham, helping them to settle into life in the UK. The society has close links with University of Nottingham alumni in Korea as well as with Study Abroad programme students from major

universities in Korea. There are events throughout the year which are open to all students who have an interest in Korea, including language lessons, Korean-style barbeques and the famous Korean Society Christmas Party.

Nottingham Labour Students A political society with members who believe in the values of the Labour Party: equality, democracy and social justice. The society works closely with the local and regional Labour parties and with Labour students. They hold regular speaker events,

socials and campaigning sessions for local candidates.

Latin, Ballroom and Salsa Society (LBSS)LBSS offers professional quality dance lessons at student prices to suit all levels of ability, from beginner to seasoned pro. For more experienced dancers, there’s the Latin and Ballroom Team which competes at university competitions across the country and a Salsa Team which demonstrates around Nottingham.



Law SocietyThe Law Society holds a wide range of events ranging from balls to river cruises and cocktail socials. There’s a strong careers service which provides interview practice, skills sessions and open days at top London offices. Members also have access to the acclaimed Law Society hockey, netball, tennis, rugby and football teams.

Lithuanian SocietyThe Lithuanian Society brings together Lithuanian students at the University of Nottingham and anyone with an interest in Lithuanian language and culture. There are regular Lithuanian film nights, traditional food events and members celebrate Independence Day and interact with other Lithuanian societies across the UK.

Living History SocietyThe society for anyone who likes the idea of charging around a battlefield in chainmail wielding an axe or having a go at making medieval clothing and wearing it at a public event. Living History Society is for all students who are interested in history, crafts, sports, medieval weapons, fighting and acting. They hold regular meetings to train and make kit and there are plenty of great socials.

Magic Society Magic Society teaches members the secrets of magic, illusion and prestigitation. Beginners and experts alike can learn magic tricks from fellow students and professional magicians, borrow resources from the library and perform at societies and events. They also organise an annual trip to the Blackpool Magic Convention and host their own gala show featuring acts from all over the UK.



Malaysian Singaporean SocietyA society which connects Malaysian and Singaporean students at Nottingham as well as anyone who’s interested in learning more about Southeast Asian culture. There are a series of events throughout the year, ranging from the Nottingham Games (the UK’s largest Singaporean sporting

event) to smaller social events like paintballing.

ManSocMan Soc unifies all students with an interest in manufacturing. It’s an avenue for sharing ideas, knowledge and solutions to academic problems. There are sporting events, socials, seminars and links with industry to help students gain an edge in the increasingly competitive jobs market.

Math SocMath Soc organises a huge variety of events including river cruises, bar crawls, science balls and charity pub quizzes to bring students from all years together. There’s also a men’s football team and a women’s netball team and the society provides guided tours of the facilities on campus and has strong connections with professional graduate companies.

Mauritian SocietyA chance for students to experience the diverse and colourful cultures of Mauritius. The society aims to foster diverse social and cultural development and to provide Mauritian students with a proud voice.

Mech SocMech Soc guides and supports all budding Mechanical Engineers. The soceity provides careers advice and industrial links as well as inter-society socials giving members a break from the stresses and strains of their course.



MedsinMedsin is a national network of students with an interest in global health. Members educate other students and act upon health inequalities in local and global communities. They also organise events to raise awareness about global health issues and fundraise to support local projects and campaigns.

Mexican SocietyThe Mexican Society is a focal point for Mexican students at Nottingham. Members meet and receive support from one another as well as promoting Mexican culture to the rest of the student body through a range of fun events.

The MicNottingham students’ official music magazine. The Mic is run by students, for students who are passionate about music. They’re always looking for new writers and anyone’s welcome to have a go at penning an article, regardless of previous experience. Contributors have the opportunity to interview bands, get free CDs and review gigs. The perfect society for anyone who loves music and wants to get their name in print.

Model UNThe Model UN Society introduces students to the work of the UN. Members debate global issues and participate in conferences and simulations of the real organisation. It’s a great way to learn about some of the most important issues the world faces today, improve public speaking skills and make new friends.

Mooting SocietyA moot is a legal debate, similar to a mock trial. Mooting Society provides members with the necessary skills and training to run two internal competitions (one of which is a first year only competition). There are also teams which compete nationally against other universities. A great society for budding barristers.



MusicalityThe Students’ Union’s musical theatre society. Musicality unites all aspects of musical theatre and performance including singing, drama, dance, production, direction and costume. Anyone can get involved, regardless of their experience or standard. Members can take part in cabarets, concerts, shows or simply come along for a sing-song or the odd theatre trip.

MussocMussoc is a large, welcoming and incredibly active society and members can play or conduct in any of the seven ensembles. There’s a popular free lunchtime concert series which is run in partnership with Blow Soc and an annual tour every Easter. Recent tours have included trips to Barcelona, Belgium and Krakow.

Natsci SocNatsci Soc is for all students who are interested in the natural sciences, including the physical, biological or social aspects of science. Members can enjoy a range of social and academic events from wild nights out to excursions.

Neuroscience SocietyA society for all neuroscience lovers. There are regular socials including a booze cruise, pub golf, and academic socials to share new research in the field. It’s also a good opportunity for newer students to make friends and get advice from those in their second and third years.



Nottingham EntrepreneursEntrepreneurism is a major part of Nottingham’s culture and Nottingham Entrepreneurs fosters this spirit amongst the student population. There are challenges (including the £500 James Caan Challenge and the Apprentice in March), business plan competitions and networking events. Many members have enjoyed success and recognition whilst studying so it’s a great way for budding entrepreneurs to get started.

Nottingham MalaysianSocietyA focal point for all Malaysian students at the University of Nottingham. The society organises a range of cultural and intellectual events including festival celebrations, day trips, cultural nights, sports events and academic talks. The highlight of the year is the Malaysian Games, the biggest Malaysian event in the UK.

Nottingham University Conservative AssociationNUCA is the largest and most successful party-political association on campus and one of the preeminent university Conservative Future branches in the country. There’s something for everyone including listening to top-class speakers, participating in social action projects, going out canvassing and leafleting, campaigning, termly dinners, Port and Policy nights and a wide variety of social events.

NSPMNSPM campaign on a range of social justice and peace issues at local, national and global levels. At NSPM meetings members will discuss various issues, organise events and engage with campaign groups.



NU FoodNottingham’s gastronomic society for all lovers of food. Members can discover new culinary cultures, get exclusive discounts at local restaurants and learn to cook with pro chefs. It’s a great way to try new dishes at the same time as making new friends.

Nurse Soc CC Nurse Soc supports student nurses and organises social events like the annual Christmas ball. The society caters for the welfare needs of student nurses and organises activities to support their learning. Members also run sessions at local schools to promote current health topics and every year the society raises money to support local charities.

NUSEX (Nottingham University Study Abroad & Exchange Society)NUSEX is the society for anyone at Nottingham who’s interested in study abroad and exchange programmes. Members have the opportunity to get to know people from all over the world and to join in with events and socials throughout the

year including nights out, tours of the city centre, quizzes and film nights.

OpsocOp Soc members have a great time singing all sorts of different styles of opera at the Christmas Cabaret and the big end of year show. There are also trips to see Opera North and the society features a Production Committee made up of artists, techies, stage management, directors,

pianists and many more.



People and PlanetPeople and Planet is the largest student network in Britain and its members campaign to end world poverty, defend human rights, and protect the environment. There are speakers, debates, quizzes, colourful demonstrations, boycotts and more, combining having fun with campaigning for real change.

Pharmacy SocietySocials, sports, suppositories; Pharmacy Society has it all! There are plenty of fun, social events to make all the early starts worthwhile. Pharmcay Soc is a great way to make friends outside of lectures and it gives students the opportunity to wear something a little more stylish than a lab coat and safety specs every once in a while.

PhilsocPhilsoc supports students in learning the philosophical skills of debate and argumentative analysis. They tackle all sorts of problems, from war and veganism to marketing ploys and advertising gimmicks. Any student who’s interested in the ethics of fur or who ponders whether we might really be in the Matrix might not get any answers, but Philsoc will show them how to ask the right questions.

Photo Soc Photo Soc members are invited to training events, talks, intern days and courses with professional photographers and can also attend regular photo soc socials. Members can also benefit from the hire of camera equipment and use of the Students’ Union darkroom.

PhysSoc Phys Soc is a society run for and by Physics students (though anyone with an interest in physics is welcome too). They organise physics and astronomy-based events such as guest lectures, trips, telescope training and fantastic social events.



Poker SocietyPoker Society holds tournaments and cash games throughout the year. Many events are free to enter, making it a great way for new players to learn and for those who are more experienced to hone their skills. It’s a fun environment for players to meet and discuss various issues within poker too.

Pole Dancing Society Pole Dancing is a cross between gymnastics and ballet on a pole. It’s loads of fun and great for fitness too. There are weekly sessions held at a dance studio in town at a very reasonable price.

Polish Society Polish Society welcomes all students of Polish

origin as well as anyone interested in Polish tradition and language. The Polish society organises numerous socials, participates in voluntary work and runs projects aimed at promoting Polish history and culture.

Politics SocietyThe Politics Society is a large, politically-neutral society providing a social outlet for all politically-minded students. Activities range from an annual trip to Westminster and termly socials (including boat cruises, quizzes, bar crawls, and rounders games) to trips abroad to locations like Washington DC and New York. The society also organises speakers, places students on a community teaching project in Nottingham, organises sports teams, provides academic and welfare support, and hosts the huge Spring Ball at the end of the year.

Pro Bono The Pro Bono Society runs a number of projects within the University, the local community and in local schools to provide general assistance and legal advice. Pro Bono (‘for the public good’ in Latin) is common in the legal profession, so it’s a great society for any budding lawyers.



Prod SocProd Soc is a society for Product Design and Manufacturing students. The society’s main aim is to help students make new friends (especially from other years), share skills and knowledge and, most importantly, have fun. Members regularly get together for day trips and hit Nottingham city centre for nights out.

Psycho SocPsycho Soc is for anyone studying or interested in Psychology. Members’ social calendars are filled with plenty of fun nights out including the amazing science ball. There are also events to support students academically including conferences and journal presentations.

Public Speaking Society The Public Speaking Society aims to build confidence and create future leaders. There are weekly sessions where advice is given on different aspects of public speaking. All abilities are catered for and it’s a great way to make new friends as well as improving public speaking skills.

Punksoc Punk Soc is a friendly, active and generally awesome society. They put on loads of lovely socials, gigs and even a club night or two. Members get discounts all over town including at Rock City. They’ve put on the likes of Sonic Boom Six, Fake Problems, This is Hell and Random Hand and they currently help to put on alternative club night, Armageddon.

Rave Society Rave Society is about all things

electronica and gives students the chance to discover the underground scene in Notts. The aim of the society is to get like-minded people together to enjoy electronic music including dubstep, techno, house, DnB and minimal.



Real Ale Society There are hundreds of ales, ciders, porters, bitters, IPAs and perrys available in Nottingham and the Real Ale Society gets students together in lovely local pubs to enjoy them. There are also trips to beer festivals, pub crawls and brewery tours.

Reggae SocietyReggae Society is all about getting students in touch with Nottingham’s thriving reggae scene.

Members are kept up-to-date on news surrounding all local events and acts and are offered discounts to some of the biggest nights including Highness and Sound System. Events including film screenings, and the occasional night at the Students’ Union bar are also held for members to get together.

Revival Gospel Choir Revival Gospel Choir brings together all students who share a common interest in singing and gospel music. Members can develop their musical skills with workshops and performances and get together to buildon their appreciation of gospel music.

Rock Soc A social society for fans of alternative music. There are weekly meetings featuring DJs, bands, pole dancers, films, games and quizzes. Rock Soc teaches members to DJ, organises club nights and concerts, trips to destinations like Alton Towers, Twycross Zoo, the Ice Arena and the cinema.

Role-Playing and Wargames Members play table-top role-playing games (such and Dungeons and Dragons), war games (Warhammer Fantasy/40k, Flames of War, etc.), boardgames (Munchkin, Shadows over Camelot, Sourcerser’s Cave, etc.), CCGs (Magic, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh) and hobbyist (model-painting). Events are hosted every week and there are live action role-playing events every other Saturday.



Romanian SocietyThe Romanian Society is there to help Romanian students settle into life in the UK, profile Romanian culture and traditions and to give all students the opportunity to find out more about the country’s culture. There are regular socials, opportunities for Romanian students to find out more about opportunities in the UK, celebrations of traditional Romanian

holidays and events where everyone can enjoy some Romanian food and music.

Russian Society An active society which organises various sporting, cultural and entertainment activities. There are regular events for members including bowling, paint balling, ballet and Russian film screenings. Above all, the society provides a home away from home for Russian students at Nottingham.

Science Fiction & Fantasy SocietySFFS is a safe haven for fans of all things geeky. The society brings like-minded people together and promotes the genres loved by its members. There are anime nights, a society magazine, geeky craft nights and regular socials.

Scout and Guide Scout and Guide is a social society for students who want to stay in contact with the scouting community or learn more about it. Members meet weekly for socials such as pub quizzes, ice skating and more adventurous activities like climbing and canoeing. They also attend SSAGO (the student branch of Scouts and Guides) events which are held at other universities.

Secular SocietyThe Secular Society provides a secular alternative to religious groups on campus and encourages activism, support and education about secularism. Members look at the issues non-religious students face through debates, speakers and socials.



Shock SocShock Soc is for anyone with an interest in electrical and electronic engineering. They provide links with professional institutions for members’ academic and professional development and organise socials throughout the year. There are industrial visits, guest lectures and workshops where everyone is encouraged to get involved.

Sikh SocietyThe Sikh Society is there to let all students know what Sikhism is about. It’s open to everyone and members enjoy a range of activities including charity football, cake sales, information talks, workshops and weekly simran and discussion sessions with langar (free food!).

Silver Screen Silver Screen is Nottingham’s mainstream film society. Members can enjoy screenings of the best contemporary films on campus every week for just £1 a ticket. They also provide a friendly and vibrant atmosphere where students can talk about film.

Slavonic SocietyThe Slavonic Society is for all students in the Slavonic Studies department or for anyone with an interest in Slavonic culture. There are regular cultural and social events such as vodka evenings and film screenings.

Slovak and Czech The society for all Slovakian and Czech students as well as anyone who’s interested in the culture, people, food and drinks of Central Europe. Regular events include dinner parties, cultural evenings and socials.

Soc SocSoc Soc is for students from the school of Sociology and Social Policy or anyone who’s interested in the subject. There are plenty of socials for people to get to know one another as well as a netball team, football team, and an annual lecture.



Song Writing SocietyThe Song Writing Society brings together song writers, musicians and anyone who’d like to learn how to write songs. There are weekly jam sessions and regular open mic nights so members have plenty of chances to show off their songs in public.

Sri Lankan Society Bringing together all Sri Lankan students at Nottingham. Members share Sri Lankan culture and traditions with the wider community and celebrate the country’s most popular sport with inter-university cricket tournaments. There are also regular dinners and socials including celebrations of Independence Day and New Year.

St John Ambulance LINKS Members have the chance to volunteer, learn first aid, socialise and play an active role in the community. The society’s main aim is to train all members in basic Community First Aid (a St John Ambulance qualification) and more advanced courses are available too.

STAR- Student Action for Refugees STAR aims to educate the student body about the position of refugees by promoting awareness of the issues surrounding refugees regionally, nationally and internationally. They also create links with the local refugee community through volunteering campaigns.

Stop AIDSThe Nottingham Stop AIDS Society is part of a national movement of students that seeks to raise awareness of the disease and campaign for change. There are speaker events, film nights and trips to Parliament and members have the chance to work at Glastonbury during the summer.



Student Improv Nottingham Student Improv Nottingham is a performance society with a difference. It’s made up of a bunch of students who love to laugh and perform improvised shows in a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere. They do everything from TV and radio to stage and street shows. Great for those who fancy something a little different.

Sudanese Nile SocietyThe Sudanese Nile Society organises activities throughout the year including cultural, educational and sporting and community events as well as trips around the UK. All Sudanese students or anyone with an interest in the culture is welcome.

Tai Chi Tai Chi is based around slow-motion routines and the benefits of practicing the martial art include increased physical mobility and relaxation of the body and mind. The Tai Chi Society holds sessions with a qualified instructor on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Tamil SocietyThe aim of the Tamil Society is to unite Tamils and non-Tamils from the University of Nottingham and celebrate this dynamic culture. There are a wide range of activities including football tournaments, film nights, parties and dance classes on offer.

Thai SocietyThe Thai Society welcomes Thai and non-Thai students to celebrate Thai culture and traditions. There are plenty of activities where students can make new friends and have fun.

TheoSoc Theo Soc is for all students studying Theology & Religious Studies and for anyone interested in the subject. There are debates, lectures, pub quizzes, and socials (often with a biblical theme).



Tongue and GrooveTongue and Groove provides lectures for Architecture students to give them inspiration. Lectures cover a broad range of topics including art, music and engineering and are delivered by international as well as local firms. There are also social events to strengthen links between staff and students.

Turkish SocietyA society which promotes the cultural, historical and environmental aspects of Turkey to students at Nottingham. It’s a friendly society where Turkish and non-Turkish students can get to know each other. Everyone is welcome (almost half the members are non-Turkish) and everyone is encouraged to join in the fun.

Unicef UNICEF at Nottingham is a branch of UNICEF UK. The main aim of the society is to raise money to go towards UNICEF’s work and to raise awareness of the charity’s efforts to help disadvantaged children around the world.

UNIS (University of Nottingham Investment Society)The society for anyone who’s interested in investments and finance. UNIS runs an investment fund for those who want to get

involved in the markets and holds regular meetings where members discuss financial topics, from what an investment bank does to how it derivates work. UNIS also works closely with corporate sponsors to offer exclusive workshops and networking trips to help members make the industry contacts which are essential in securing internships and jobs.

Veg SocMembers meet every week to eat great vegetarian and vegan food at local restaurants. There are also cupcake making sessions, Ready Steady Cook contests, tea socials and trips to farms. It’s a friendly, welcoming group for people who don’t happen to eat animals. New members are always welcome to come along, eat good food and enjoy discounts at local restaurants, all in a preach-free atmosphere.



Vietnamese Society The Vietnamese Society promotes Vietnamese culture to its members and to the wider student body. The society also acts as a support network for Vietnamese students at Nottingham, providing advice on accommodation and study strategies. There are a number of activities throughout the year giving members the chance to socialise and meet new people.

Wilderness MedicineMembers of the Wilderness Medicine Society learn medical skills which will help them to cope in difficult situations and broaden their awareness of adventure and humanitarian medicine. There are talks by speakers who have been involved in the provision of medical care in unusual and challenging environments and courses such as the Advanced Medical Life Support course.

Wine and Spirits Wine and Spirits is a relaxed and friendly society. Members meet regularly on campus for a variety of themed tastings, from English wine tastings to cocktail nights.

Yoga Society A large, friendly society for beginners and seasoned yoga practitioners alike. An ideal society for those who want to improve their flexibility or take some time to relax. There are five classes a week covering a range of styles and there are several trips throughout the year including a weekend retreat.

Young Greens The Young Greens is the University of Nottingham’s branch of the Green Party. The Young Greens run local campaigns, organise events and work with the Green Party on national campaigns about environmental and social justice issues. Anyone who’s passionate about environmental and ethical issues is welcome.
