The weather is changing, and the sun is out more, not so humid, and this means sport
is a lot more enjoyable at this time of year.
We must take some time to celebrate our sporting success in Trimester 1. While
the outdoor sports were all turned into friendly games, the Indoor Cricket marched
on with a Northside and Southside competition. Mount Alvernia College had two
senior teams and two Junior teams competing in this competition, and all teams finished top of the
Northside ladder. This resulted in all of our teams playing grand finals against the winning Southside
teams. We are proud to report that students’ coaches and parents can be proud of the results, with
our Senior teams winning both the A and B competitions, and the Juniors finishing runner-up in both A
and B. Indoor Cricket has been one of our most successful sports for us over the last few years, and
seeing the girls play in the team environment at the games is supportive and motivating. A credit to all
involved over the years.
We now move into Trimester 2 sports. Nominations are again increasing over 2017 numbers. While
this is great and part of the plan to engage the girls on sport, it comes with its own challenges for the
competition. Sport in general for the CaSSSA colleges is on the increase, so there is pressure on finding
locations to deal with the capacity and staff and parents to help coordinate the teams. We are thankful
that CaSSSA has an Executive Officer in charge of arranging these competitions, and they are already
forward planning to ensure the supply of resources can match the increasing demand. What can we do
here? Often we are understaffed on teams with just one coach and no manager to support the team; if
you would like to be part of a winning culture and share the joy of sport, we could really use more
parents as managers to allow the coaches to coach when out at the games. Each trimester runs for
eight weeks, with games on Wednesday nights from 3-5pm. We would love to hear from you if you
are interested in being on the team.
Sports for this trimester include Soccer - we have many teams and enter many knock-out competitions,
along with the Wednesday CaSSSA Sport competition. Mount Alvernia College is reigning champion of
the Open league, and I know the girls are keen to defend this title in 2018.
Volleyball returns, with the Years 7 and 8 teams having their chance to play; again we will be defending
the top division here after a successful 2017 campaign. Trials start next week for volleyball and
numbers are huge.
Hockey is another strong sport for Mount Alvernia Sport. In 2017 we finished in third place in the
Seniors after missing the grand final by a countback of points. The disappointment of this has already
turned to excitement for what can be achieved by the team in 2018.
Lastly we will see the commencement of Netball for the Senior and Intermediate students. We have
selected a competitive team to travel to Townsville in July, and are mid-way through selecting the
remaining intermediate and Senior teams. Again, like soccer, we will have our top Senior and Junior
team competing at the QC Cup and Vicki Wilson Cup competitions, alongside the CaSSSA Wednesday
games.

One of the big movers here at the College is the introduction of Rugby Sevens as a sport. We have
earmarked three carnivals to play at this year, and the interest has been huge. With the support of
Brothers Rugby Club, we will be holding a come-and-try afternoon on Tuesday May 8 on the Mount
Alvernia Oval. Trials will be held in the next few weeks for teams.
Bootcamp has begun again this term, and the girls have been enjoying the variety of classes on offer.
This term we will have pilates, boxing, Zumba, and strength classes, to name a few. It’s encouraging to
see the girls get actively involved in new activities with such enthusiasm.
This term we will add some endurance walking, which will lead into our WW1 Kokoda challenge in
October. After an inspiring speech by Maddi Tilbury at our Anzac Day Assembly, we expect a lot of
interest in this. More information on this event will come in the following weeks.
Cross Country 2018 saw a new two-lap course and a very high participation rate. It was great to see
so many girls running and walking the spectator-friendly course. With the addition of a ‘tent city’ and
coloured bibs, there was a greater opportunity to see which houses were coming past, and the girls
were very enthusiastic in their cheering from the tents. While participation is key, we did have some
girls racing the clock, and those girls did themselves proud, clocking some amazing times. Well done to
all participants.
Make active attractive is a key message we are looking at this year. So, as we progress through this term
and the pressure ramps up for your daughter, talk to her, encourage her, and help keep her active and
in sport.

Along with the start of Term 2 comes the final rounds of our sports offered in Trimester 1 and the
beginning of trials for our Trimester 2 sports. Although many games were cancelled and the
competitions for both volleyball and AFL had to be made friendly due to the weather, Mt A once again
achieved excellent results in the Indoor Cricket competition. Trials are now underway for netball,
soccer, and hockey, along with volleyball for Years 7 and 8. Due to the huge success last year, Mt A is
once again offering Rugby Sevens, with a lot of exciting come-and-try days to give it a go.
It is so great to see so many girls getting involved in sport throughout the College, as studies show that
sport and involvement in any physical activity has a very wide variety of benefits, not only for health but
also on the academic side as well. Sport is known to improve social skills, increase self-esteem and
confidence, reduce pressure, stress ,and anxiety, while teaching teamwork and problem solving.
Not only this, but sport also provides a method of maintaining physical health and fitness. This is
because, “exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps the body build more connections
between nerves, leading to increased concentration, enhanced memory, stimulated creativity, and bet-
ter-developed problem solving skills” (Khelil, 2015). Personally, I have found that, in the stresses I have
faced throughout my time at Mt A, I have turned to sport and physical activity countless times to help
relieve this and allow me to relax. I encourage you to look at your daily schedule (not just your school
timetable) and to complete a maintenance check on yourself. Check for a well balanced timetable
which includes time for study, physical activity and social activities.

2018 Cross Country has already been a big adventure this year, and we aren’t even halfway through the
season. After having to postpone the carnival last term due to weather, the girls are have become even
more excited to run for their houses this term.
Training is well underway, with major improvements being seen. All the girls ran well in today’s carnival
and are training hard for CASSSA coming up at the end of May. In preparation for the inter-school
event, Mount Alvernia, once again, is participating in the Mt St Michael’s meet on 9 May and the UQ
meet on 16 May. These meets are a great way for the girls to improve their skills and to compete
against other schools. We hope to see as many girls at these meets as possible and to see their training
