Message from the Managing DirectorEarlier this year, HML kicked off the HKCEC’s 30th birthday celebrations with great anticipation. As an aspirational and forward-looking organisation, we are using this milestone to plan ahead under the theme “Breakthrough · Advance Together”.
One major “Breakthrough” area is digital transformation, and our team is working hard and investing heavily to create the “Smart HKCEC”. Our commitment to the environment stretches further this year, as we have taken the bold step to cut out disposable plastic cutlery in support of our planet. As for “Advance Together”, we are doing this by extending our collaborations with event organisers, and sharing success with our team, our customers, and the wider community.
We are continuing to scale new heights as a professional venue team, but our goal today remains unchanged as when our doors first opened – to make the HKCEC a global benchmark for excellence.

Embracing the Internet of ThingsCutting-edge “Internet of Things” (IoT) technology lies at the heart of our current upgrade of the HKCEC’s Building Management System (BMS), enabling advanced data analytics and subsequent system optimisation. The new BMS upgrade also enhances the functionality of HKCEC’s energy management and preventive maintenance systems. Scheduled for completion in 2019, this project marks a regional first in the large-scale use of IoT sensors in an indoor environment and is setting a major new benchmark for the industry.
By installing over 600 sensors throughout the HKCEC to monitor indoor air quality, temperature and humidity, we are reaching a major milestone in “ambient intelligence”, delivering an even more comfortable environment.
Stylish and sustainableHML gave the toilets in Hall 5G a complete makeover in the year, adding new features such as nursery facilities, a dressing corner, and non-slip floor tiles. At the same time, we introduced sustainability features such as lower-energy LED lights and water-saving fittings as part of our drive for a greener HKCEC.
We also replaced 2,162 and 236 light fittings in the Harbour Road Entrance ceiling and Phase 2 hall concourse area respectively with LED lighting, slashing energy consumption effectively.
Massive Wi-Fi rebuild Recognising that Wi-Fi is now an essential part of daily life, HML is investing US$3.9 million in a huge revamp project that will guarantee HKCEC users consistently fast, reliable, and high density Wi-Fi services at all times. A breakthrough at multiple levels, the new network is utilising the highest standards to increase the per-user network bandwidth to 5Mbps, the number of concurrent mobile devices supported from 5,000 to 20,000, and the number of access points to 660. The entire revamp will be completed within 2018.
Fast, effective, innovative responses to requests In thoughtful response to customer suggestions, we set up new mobile charging facilities at the two main HKCEC entrances – highly convenient for visitors and guests, and absolutely free. And when parents asked for better and more accessible nursing facilities, our outside-the-box solution was to introduce mobile nursery rooms in Hall 3FG and Hall 5FG concourse, complementing the existing four permanent nursery rooms.

A YEAR FULL OF IMPRESSIVE EVENTS
Business overviewIn fiscal year 2017-18 (1 July 2017 – 30 June 2018), the HKCEC welcomed an attendance of over 8.2* million and a total of 1,061 events, which included:
47 trade exhibitions, 25 trade & public exhibitions,
46 public exhibitions
110 recurrent exhibitions, 7 new exhibitions, 1 returning exhibition
39 international conferences, 13 new to the HKCEC
127 local conferences, 56 new to the HKCEC
Highlights of the year The HKCEC expanded its portfolio of art-related events this year by welcoming the inaugural China Guardian (HK) 2017 Autumn Auctions; while Gourmet Asia 2018 – a platform for fine foodstuffs – boosted our impressive reputation for premium hospitality-related events. Our conference schedule also expanded significantly; among 69 new conferences were the 33rd Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress and the CFA Institute Annual Conference 2018, with 8,000 and 5,000 attendees respectively.
Marketing the HKCEC around the globe Throughout the year, HML executives worked tirelessly to identify new prospects, bring new business to the HKCEC, and promote the city as an ideal exhibition and convention destination. We also worked closely with the Hong Kong Tourism Board to present nine convention bids, and welcomed representatives from 37 overseas organisers on familiarization visits.
F&B excellence on the grandest of scales With over 40% of banquets in the year attended by over 1,000 guests, HML has continued to prove its exceptional abilities in handling large-scale banquets. Records tumbled when the F&B team catered for the 15th Congress of the World Federation of Hainanese Associations – they served 7,300 sit-down meals in just two days, while also preparing 4,500 meal boxes.
Another triumph for our F&B team was Art Basel Hong Kong. With some 80,000 visitors attending this prestigious event over five days, the F&B team excelled itself by preparing and serving 63,190 food items, many of them using brand new recipes, to the highest standards.
Congress Plus goes express Always looking to enhance its menus and streamline its services, in August 2017 Congress Plus launched a brand-new express lunch buffet menu to give customers a wider choice of food in the short lunch-hour timeframe. The new concept proved an instant success, with the number of lunch covers handled by Congress Plus rocketing by 22% since the express lunch buffet service was introduced.
Mobilising customers and staff for better safetySafety and security has always been an HML priority; now we are actively encouraging our event organisers to get on board too. With 87% of exhibitions appointing Safety Officers this year upon HML’s new initiative, safety inspections have been streamlined and safety issues rectified lightning fast. We also invited major contractors to two focus group meetings that effectively highlighted our stringent safety policies. These efforts have been rewarded by a rise in customer feedback ratings for our security services. Meanwhile, 33 briefing sessions for internal staff (on fire hazards and access control protocols) have raised safety and security awareness across the board.
The first-choice venue for sensitive events Our renowned professional crowd management and security services have made the HKCEC a first-choice venue for complex and sensitive events. Important events that ran without a hitch at the HKCEC this year were the Meetings for the Election of Hong Kong Deputies to the National People’s Congress, the Legislative Council By-Election, and the Collection of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Centenary Commemorative Banknotes which was attended by 90,000 banknote collectors.
Enhancements and innovations driven by customersThe HML team received 99% “satisfactory” ratings in feedback questionnaires on events, but that has not slowed our drive for service improvement. Acting on customers’ suggestions, we carried out 182 valuable new initiatives over the year. One involved us producing two safety videos for pre-event briefings that provided casual security guards with guidelines for our expected high standards of safety and customer service. In other initiatives, we enhanced training for frontline catering services staff in leadership, communication and crisis management. Our e-questionnaire system has also been revamped, adding new areas such as sustainability, event logistics, Wi-Fi connectivity, safety and emergency preparedness planning.
Digital communication to expand our outreachDigital platforms are offering HML unprecedented opportunities to reach out to customers. Most of our major marketing and branding initiatives are now featured on 94 different digital platforms. We have continued to build a significant Facebook presence, posting a total of 226 feeds on our Facebook fan page over the year. Six special Facebook games were launched, with the games to promote Christmas menus in particular drawing over 124,000 people reach.
Comprehensive staff training initiativesTo “Advance together” with our staff and provide them with meaningful growth opportunities, in FY2017/18 we delivered 13,571 hours of training, a 14.2% increase over the previous year. We also added new programmes in management skills, teamwork, communication skills, and digital competencies to our training portfolio. At the same time, to foster a positive working environment, we organised 75 staff activities that promoted team bonding and good work-life balance. These efforts are reflected in a remarkably low staff turnover rate – with 61% of HML staff having worked with us for five years or more.
Building momentum by injecting new talentWe pride ourselves on nurturing young talent and regularly injecting fresh blood into our talent pool. This year, the Departmental Trainee programme took on five new engineering trainees, and a brand-new Western Kitchen Trainee programme was initiated. We employed 50 trainees from tertiary institutions in various fields, and another 39 in our Hospitality Experience Programme. We also welcomed back eight new graduates who had previously been trainees at HML during their university studies as full time staff members.
Advancing together through CSR cooperationThis year, for the first time, we mobilised our clients and stakeholders to donate Chinese New Year puddings on their behalf. A total of 1,136 puddings were redistributed to the needy.
Looking to expand our reach further, we teamed up with a new CSR partner, Little Life Warrior Society, and ran a cupcake workshop for 20 child patients. Two HML chefs also partnered with a member of the Fu Hong Society, winning a gold award in a cooking competition. HML’s community work concluded this year with 1,068 volunteer service hours, and attaining the 15+ Caring Company logo recognition.
Partnership successesHML’s community work was awarded “Outstanding Partner of Social Enterprise Award”, following our nomination by CSR partner – Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong. We continued to support artists with disabilities, purchasing and leasing artworks for display and using in marketing materials, and regularly inviting artists to special events and sharing sessions.
New steps forward in the battle against food wasteIn-house, our food waste decomposer recycled 35,700 kg of food waste into 3,310 kg of fertilizer over the year. We also launched a pilot food waste sorting scheme for 205 selected banquets. Starting from June 2018 we have been transporting our sorted food waste to the Government’s new Organic Resources Recovery Centre for recycling. In a collaboration “first” with the Environmental Protection Department, we ran an educational “Waste Less · Save Food” Poster Design Competition for students that attracted 314 entries from 23 schools in Wan Chai.
New recycling initiatives push HML further ahead HML forged ahead in its recycling efforts this year by launching an inaugural electronic waste recycle activity for staff and their families, which saw 168 recycled electronic items collected and donated to charities Caritas and Food Angel. Our existing recycling drive moved to a new level too, with 382,772 kg of materials recycled. One special highlight was a 72% increase in the amount of glass recycled, rising from 23,160 kg to almost 40,000 kg.
OUR PLANETThink Before PlasticIn 2018 HML decided to take the industry lead by setting up an innovative Plastic Reduction Task Force. All HKCEC’s restaurants and concession stands have now stopped providing plastic straws, and have replaced disposables plastic cutlery and stirrers with wooden utensils. We have also stopped selling plastic bottled water from restaurant outlets and vending machines, encouraging guests to use our 18 free water fountains instead. More is to come, as we make plans to source alternatives for other plastic items such as meal boxes and cup lids.
Helping staff to think green, act green We understand that green action springs from personal motivation, so this year we arranged two environmental awareness seminars for over 100 HML staff on climate change and plastic reduction. Both were given by Mr Edwin Lau, Founder and Executive Director of Hong Kong environmental organisation The Green Earth. In another green learning initiative, we organised an outing for staff to the Mai Po Nature Reserve so they could experience these beautiful local wetlands and learn about the importance of protecting the natural environment.
The policing operation for the high security event – Celebration Activities for the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR – was a success. HML should be credited for facilitating police deployment and venue searches, thus ensuring the integrity of the operation area. I cannot stress highly enough the importance of your valuable support.
