CLASSROOMGROUNDRULESClassroomDiscussionsandIn-classWorkYoulearnalotwhenyoutalkaboutthings,questionthem,andrephraseideasorclaimsin yourwords. Ratherthan‘hey’or‘Ms.’or‘Miss’pleasebeginyouremailwith‘DearProfessorStalcup’.LecturePowerPointSlidesInordertodowellinthiscourse,youwillneedtoattendthepre-departureclassesandtakegoodnotes.Tohelpyousucceed,Iwillsharemylectureslidesfortheday,usuallyaheadoftime,butsometimesIwanttorevisethemslightlyoraddnotesbasedonourdiscussions.LaptopUseEvery time you check your email, amessage, or something else online, you lose thethread of the lecture or class discussion for at least several minutes. I will almostcertainly say something during this time that will be crucial. However, it is almostimpossiblenottojustchecksomethingquicklyorrespondtoafriendifyouareonline.ItypicallywanderaroundtheclassroomandifIseeyoudoinganythingonline,Iamlikelytocauseasceneanditwillbeembarrassingforusboth.Thesekindsofactivitieswillnothelpwithyourgrade.Youshouldturnoffyourwificonnectioninclass,whetherweareinOttawaorsomewhereinBrazil.SmartphoneuseEverythingIwroteaboutlaptopsisalsotrueforcellphones.Formostofyou,thereisnoneed for a cell phone during class time. If I notice that you are using one during thelecture, I may ask you to leave. Please do not do this so that we all can avoidembarrassment. PolicyonlanguagequalityandlatesubmissionsClassattendanceisnecessarytosuccessfullycompletethiscourse.Youwillalsobejudgedonyourwritingabilities.Itisrecommendedtotaketheappropriatemeasurestoavoidmistakessuchasspelling,syntax,punctuation,inappropriateuseofterms,etc.Youmaybepenalizedupto15%,totheprofessor’sdiscretion.Late submissions are not tolerated. Exceptions are made only for illness or otherserious situations deemed as such by the professor. Therewill be a penalty for latesubmissions. University regulations require all absences from exams and all latesubmissionsduetoillnesstobesupportedbyamedicalcertificate.Absence for any other serious reason must be justified in writing, to the academicassistantsof theFaculty,within fivebusinessdays following thedateof theexamorsubmission of an assignment.
