What are conjunctions? A conjunction is a word that is used to
connect words, phrases or clauses.
“AND”, “BUT”, and “OR”
Use of “AND” You use “and” to link words that are similar. For example I like spaghetti _____ pizza. I like spaghetti and pizza. “And” is also used to show time sequence. For example I ate spaghetti for lunch _____ pizza for dinner. I ate spaghetti for lunch and for dinner.
Use of “BUT” You use “but” to link words that are
different and do not normally go together. For example I like spaghetti ______ I don’t like
hamburgers. I like spaghetti but I don’t like hamburgers.
Use of “OR” You use “or” to talk about choices. For example You can eat spaghetti ______ pizza foe dinner. You can eat spaghetti or for dinner.
Conjunctions Linking Phrases You also use conjunctions (and, or and but) link phrases. The phrases in these example
are printed in colour.1.We all like going shopping ___ going to cafes. We all like going shopping and going to cafes.2. The car is very old ___ still very reliable. The car is very old but still very reliable.3. Is it quicker to go by train ___ by car? Is it quicker to go by train or by car?
Conjunctions With Lists You use the conjunctions and or or with lists of
