ACTION-LINE 7 DEC / JAN 2016
Day two started out fairly overcast and after a very hearty breakfast prepared by the lovely B and B landlady we were off to absorb more of the Goodwood experience. The previous day had left us a little shocked by some of the food prices so we decided to take a selection of sandwiches, drinks and nibbles obtained from one of the lay-by servos just out of Portsmouth.
Enroute to Goodwood it was obvious that Sunday was going to be a bigger day as there were many historic cars travelling on the highway, the drivers of which were either taking the opportunity to give their cars a good run or letting out their pent up racer frustrations.
Arrival at one of the many car parks confirmed that the day was going to be bigger as the parking area we were directed to was three quarters full and the time was just eight AM . Tractor drawn carriages were the preferred mode of transport from the distant parking area to the entrance gate.
Getting inside was effortless and we made our way to the unrestricted paddock to check out the pre race activities. On the way we came across an outdoor Holy Communion church service which was well attended and being administered by one of the racing Chaplains who then went onto do the track blessing. One point of interest was the hymns were being played by a small group of British Arms Band musicians dressed in full red coat kit. Quite a nice touch to the proceedings and bringing back some long forgotten memories from my time in the services. As the racing wasn?t to start until 10 AM there was plenty of time to take a closer look at the Spitfire and Hurricane displays and return to the Earls Court M otor
Show. On show in the Earls Court pavilion were 19 Ferraris spanning seven decades from the 166 M M Barchetta of 1950 to the 2015 488 GTB. Of course other marquees. were represented through Aston M artin, BM W, M aserati and Mustang.
It wasn?t just the cars with a high pedigree that were on show. One novel
crowed attraction was a 1960 Vauxhall Viva HA in stunning gold which was part of Vauxhall?s movie theme to recreate images of the ?60s and the James Bond Goldfinger movie via the Gold Viva name for the car. Spectators could have their photograph taken with the car and then have their image and name in light outside the cinema facade behind the car. This attracted many spectators.
Another Vauxhall was also raising eyebrows. A 1926 Vauxhall 30/98 with Velox bodywork which was the personal transport for Lord M arch to the Saturday night Goodwood Ball. A VIP taxi service exists for the Revival to run people around and these are typically period Rolls-Royces and Bentleys.
The first on track entertainment was in the form of a parade of ?50s and ?60s all American ?Gasser? hot rods who took every opportunity to do burn outs and wheelies as they toured the circuit. The gassers were not only a track display as they were parked up near the main entrance and the rear of the Circuit Shop had been turned into a replica of the Best Dam Garage in Town
aka Henry ?Smokey? Yunick. The first race of the day was the Earl of M arch Trophy for the 500cc Formula Three cars of the period 1948 - 1959. There was some high spirited

racing going on between the N orton, Triumph and JAP engined cars with one roll over on the back of the circuit and a head on contact with the wall on the start line. Both drivers were a little shaken but otherwise no injuries. The next track event that had our interest was the track parade for Land Rovers to celebrate 50 years of the Defender with a hand picked collection of vehicles produced by Land Rover from 1948 through to 1966. All up there were 55 cars on parade with the most unusual being a replica of the very first Land Rover, a 1947 centre steer. The idea was that it could service both the left and right hand drive markets.
Part 2 of the Settrington Cup for Austin J40 pedal cars attached a great crowd and it was interesting to note that while these cars are not racing they are parked in a half scale pitt area.
One 25 minute race for the bikes followed and it was time for the St M ary?s Trophy Race Part 2 for Production Based Saloons. This was to be the race where the owner drives the car starting from their qualifying position and overall winner being determined on the aggregate result of both races. After such a sterling job in the Saturday race by Tom Kristensen it was now time for car owner Henry M ann to show his stuff. After a slow and cautious start from second grid position Henry M ann trailed the Lotus Cortina of M attt N eal for several laps before making a clean pass on lap three and cruising onto victory. He was followed home by the two Lotus Cortinas of N eal and Jordan making a Ford trifecta. I would encourage you to have a look at these races from Goodwood on youtube as they are quite interesting.
Another highlight of the day was the tribute to Bruce M cLaren which saw a great track display of some of the cars that were to take him through his career. Special guests included members of Bruce?s family and Sir Jackie Stewart was one of the recognisable face to take the 1967 BRM M cLaren M 5A for a lap in the parade. It was quite a coincidence that in 1964 Jackie Stewart should break the lap record set by Bruce M cLaren. Sadly, it was on the Goodwood circuit that Bruce was killed during testing in 1970. Another Battle of Britain air
display and several more races and it was t ime
to head towards the car park feeling exhausted
but not before having a quick look at the trade village just outside the main entrance. Here was to be found a great many trade stands displaying unique parts for the motor industry through to examples of high end restorations. Of course there were many race cars being offered for sale. N ext step was to find the car in the massive parking area. ?Which direction? I think its over that way?. Fifteen minutes later the car was located with a sigh of relief. Several minutes later after an easy exit from the parking area we were on the highway to Portsmouth.
There were no attendance figures announced on the Sunday but I have since heard that the total attendance for the three day was close to 150,000 and it sure felt like it trying to move around but still a very enjoyable and memorable experience, one that I can highly recommend.
