Melancholy. Masha: When Daddy was alive, we had thirty, forty people at our parties, it

was loud and festive; today we have a man and a half, it’s quieter than a desert . . .I’m leaving. I am, I’m having an unromantic fit of melancholy, I’m not happy . . .” Pg. 10

Act I/g: I Will Stay For LunchPg. 17-21

A spark of hope. Very intrigued by Vershinin. A small piece of her sadness starts to disappear. Vershinin’s philosophizing has, in a small way, inspired her to stay. He has

sparked her curiousity.

Enamoured by Vershinin Scared In Love This is where her depression has slipped away and the beginning stages of

being in love have consummed her. The forbidance of the situation excites her. This Act is where I believe her happiness is at its highest point.

I don’t think there is a huge shift in Masha’s emotions here, but I thought that this was a very important moment in the play. Vershinin is the only one whoever recognizes this idea. I wonder if Masha ponders this later in Act III.

Vershinin: We cannot be happy, we only can dream about being happy.

Act III/d: I’m So In LovePg. 62-65

• Full of intimate feelings towards Vershinin, the vunerable side of Masha is beginning to show.

• Hopeful-swept up in his words and hopeful that there is some way for the two of them to be together in a public manner.

• Vershinin: Today I’m in an exceptional mood, I have such a deep craving for life… “Love comes to people of all ages! Yes, it blesses young and old alike! Pg. 63

Act III/e: Leave Kulygin…Forever!Pg. 65-67

• Frustration is at a higher level. Masha’s happiness is starting to be blocked by the obstacles.

• She is stuck in this boring and flawed marriage knowing her true love is on the other side of the wall.

Act III/f: Girl talkPg. 67-69

• This is the unit where Masha’s hope starts to plummet. After telling her sisters about Vershinin and herself, she looks to them, especially Olga, for an answer, “But is it bad…”, however she discovers that her dream will probably never happen. Her love affair will remain a love affair. I would think Masha’s dream is to marry Vershinin and have children of their own. However, I am not sure if that would even be a dream possible of dreaming during this time period. I think Masha secretly wishes Vershinin’s wife will successfully commit suicide one of the times she tries.

• Olga’s and Irina’s emotional baggage as piled on top of Masha and she is about to blow up.

Act IV/c: I’m Back At Square OnePg.78-82

Sad, Scared, and Angry. Masha: When you grab happiness in such litle bits, in so many swipes, and

lose it, you get even harder and more bitter. . .I’m seething inside.. Pg. 79

Act IV/h-l: Our Goodbye, Stepping Into My Nightmare, I Refuse To Step In That House, Time To Go Home, And Then There Were

ThreePg. 88-94 Despair

Complete and utter loss Her nightmare has come true, she will never see Vershinin again. I think the only thing that is going to allow her to go on with life, is the

glimmer of faith Vershinin has left with her. Masha: They’re leaving, one of them forever, and we will be left alone to start

over. Start again. We have to live, what else is there? There they go, headed south-every spring and every autumn, back and forth, thousands of years, they don’t know why, that’s just what they do, back and forth . . . until God reveals his mystery to them at last. Pg. 93
