Alkaline feeding boosts returns Feeding maximum levels of starch for maximum performance without the risk

It is widely known that feeding high levels of starch drives production in ruminants, both of milk and liveweight gain. There is however always the risk of causing acidosis if feeding levels are too high.ACT are now able to offer a range of alkaline solutions allowing you to feed very high levels of starch and sugar without that risk.The key ingredient in this new range of feeds is Home’n’Dry a high protein pellet which can be mixed with home grown cereals or other bought in feeds.

ALKAGRAIN – a combination of cereals and Home’n’Dry which can either be produced on farm or bought in as a finished feed. It is a 13ME, 14-15% protein feed which is alkaline and can be fed safely at high levels.

Undersowing cover crops in MaizeTwo Agrovista trials in 2016 and 2017 confirmed the potential of drilling grass cover/companion crops with the maize crop at the time of planting or at 6-8 leaf of the maize without significant impact on dry matter yields. Pre-emergence pendimethalin was evaluated and although it checked the grass-based cover crops they survived to produce good post-harvest cover. On strong grass growing sites, seed rates need to be reduced but pre-em herbicide thinning also needs consideration.Maize growers have an excellent opportunity to improve the environmental footprint of growing maize with benefits to soil structure and nutrient capture.There is also significant interest from water companies where nutrient or soil loss is under focus in water catchments.

Pre-emergence pendimethalin herbicide can be used on sites that have a higher weed burden.Post-emergence: Mesotrione +/- Terbuthylazine can be used (Callisto or Calaris @ 1.0 l/ha) try to leave a 10 -14-day gap before then doing under sowing of cover crops. Do not use Nicosulfuron either in mixes or alone.
