Gamma Irradiation Facility

•  Hazard category 3 nuclear facility

•  Used to evaluate the effects of high energy gammas on variousmaterials (space components,

weapons components, cherryseeds, etc.)

•  3 irradiation cells, 1 with largemovable wall to facilitate irradiationof large items (such as an M60tank)

•   Approximately 232 kCi of Co-60

•  Filmed for Discovery Channelspecial (awaiting scheduling of premier)

•  Removed 224 Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) Co-60 source pinsfrom the GIF and returned to theoriginal manufacturer 

•  Total Curies: ~10,000

•  Some sourcesdated back to 1963

completed) to characterize andrepackage radioactive material

•  Facility includes fume hood andhot cell with manipulators to allowfor remote operations

•  Extends ACRRF operational life

for 60 years to utilize theunique, irreplaceable fuel worth ~$200M
