selling for $140. Lower prices tended to revolve around more modern or commonplace models like a 1950s Columbia 26-inch women’s coaster bike ($25) and a 70s-era Schwinn LeTour II 27-inch men’s 10-speed ($30) although a restored 1950s Murray chain-drive tricycle got snatched up for just $50.
Motorcycles comprised the second round, bring-ing the auction’s second and third highest bids. Second place at $5,250 went to a 2016 Harley Davidson Nostalgic
Springer motorcycle, with a 1450cc engine, profes-sionally assembled from 95 percent Harley Davidson parts. The cycle was listed in “as new” condition with just 1,000 miles. Third place bring-ing $4,500 was for a 2005 Harley Davidson FXDI model with 1400cc engine, detachable windshield, and luggage rack. It was listed in “excellent condi-tion” with 8,450 miles. The remaining, primarily vintage motorcycles included a 1962 CZ 250 in running condition that sold for $1,025 and a 1962 Yamaha Trailmaster 50, also in running condition, that took $650.
For the environmental-ly conscious, there were scooters and mopeds available. One buyer, no doubt hearing echoes of the Hondells’ “Little Honda”, picked up a 1965 Honda 90 cc in good cos-metic shape but with a frozen engine for $500. A 1980s Taiwan-made Whizzer moped, in run-ning condition sold for $700. And, a 1982 Suzuki FA50 Pit Bike, in restor-able but running condi-tion sold for $250.
Next came project piec-es. Looking like a “barn find” was a 1950s Cushman Eagle scooter. That full restoration can-didate sold for $330. More intact and in better cos-metic shape was a 1960s Allstate scooter that gar-nered $200. More like a box of parts, grabbing $100, was a 1950 CZ 125 with gas tank, fender, and wheel. Similar was the lot of 1970s Indian “parts bikes” mopeds that also sold for $100.
After all the two-wheeled fanfare came the auction’s biggest hit — a 1960 Pontiac Catalina two-door hardtop with a fresh 389 engine, running well. It was listed as 95 percent complete, with professional body resto-ration, still needing paint
Above: Many of the vintage bikes sold for three-figure sums. This 1970s Schwinn 5-speed picked up $575.
Above: Small displacement motorcycles like these were popular in the 1960s. Even with a frozen engine, this Ho nda went for $500.
Above: CZ motorcycles were produced in Czechoslovakia starting in the 1930s. There was not much left of this 1950s model, but the parts still sold for $100.
Above: Whizzer motorized bicycles were produced in the U.S. from 1939 to 1965. This 1980s model was made in Taiwan and sold for $700.
Above: Have you ever seen a chain-drive tricycle? They’ve been more popular in Europe than in the U.S. This Huffy was one of the few made stateside. It sold for $50.
and interior. It sold for $7,000. Next came a 1985 GMC 4X2, 3/4-ton step-side pickup with a 305 V-8, 4-speed manual transmission, and an 8-foot box. It was listed as
a southern vehicle with good sheet metal - a res-toration project with extra parts (fenders, hood, doors, tailgate, seats, and box sides). It was picked up for $2,500.
A Honda 125 three-wheel ATV in excellent running condition sold for $875.

Above: This Schwinn “chopper” from the 1990s sold for $140.

Christmas book brings lots of information down the chimneyMaybe it’s rediscover-
ing the boxes of ornaments stored in the attic for the past 11 months, or the chance to mail a greeting card to friends not seen nor heard from since last year this time. Perhaps it’s the knotted strings of lights, the Christmas china, or the abundance of Santa gew-gaws. Oh, and the gifts. There are lots of reasons people love Christmas.
Whether Dec. 25 is cel-ebrated as a secular hol-iday, spent in church, or a combination of the two, there’s no denying that this one day, and the sea-son surrounding it, elicits widespread enthusiasm,
from subdued to way over the top. But when all is said and done, the one thing that makes this hol-iday so universally appeal-ing is the fact that it’s all about tradition. Now, at a time when many of us are searching for something warm and fuzzy, the fa-miliarity of Christmas is particularly comforting. And so, for that reason, during this unpredictable time, I’m recommending
Christmas:1960 - Present (A collector’s guide to dec-orations and customs) by Robert Brenner.
From the start, I en-joyed my copy of Christ-mas as I flipped through and looked at the pictures (more about them later). And I kept seeing recur-ring themes (“Our Trees,” “Our Cards,” “Under Our Trees,” and so on). I was a bit confused. That’s when I
got smart and turned back to the “Contents” page and realized that there is method to this madness. Poor Robert might easily have filled five volumes, but he crammed it all into one. Each chapter (after the introduction) covers a decade. Once I saw how he had organized a ton of information, I began to ap-preciate the fact that he’d taken a rather unwieldy subject and tied it up with a bow. Bless him.
Nothing is perfect. The print is on the small side.

Just saying, those of us who feel nostalgic about Christmases dating from the second half of the 20th century might feel visu-ally challenged. To you I say, get out your “read-ers,” turn on an extra reading light, and enjoy.
Within the pages of this softbound text, Bren-ner dives into great detail on just about everything you need to know about
collecting Christmas. Cu-rious about bubble lights, silver trees, the Elf on the Shelf? It’s covered here. The Swingin’ Sixties, Bi-centennial days, the time when we got nostalgic or thought we were all Mar-tha Stewart? Read on.
I’ve written about Christmas collectibles over the years and be-friended those who are majorly addicted. And I love picking through my own holiday accumula-tion. Little wonder, then, that I consider this book
to be a treasure trove. Even though some of the information presented is a bit too deep to match my interest at this point in time (there’s a lot of in-formation about Europe-an ornament makers, for instance), it is still a good resource to have on the bookshelf. On the other hand, if Christmas deco-rations were a college ma-jor, this would no doubt be the best text for the 101 survey course.
About the images: They’re wonderful, fun,
and quirky, all at the same time. And they offer a pictorial overview of a wide range of Christmas collectibles, from Golden Books and nutcrackers to vintage gift wrap and cookie tins. Not surpris-ingly, there is a good rep-resentation of ceramics in the image of Santa, elves, and snowmen. Of course, decorations for the tree (tree toppers and tinsel, lights and ornaments) are well represented. And then there are the vari-ous family photographs: I’m sure most readers will find them very similar to ones in their own family albums.
Looking to coordinate a mid-century modern tree with your mid-century dé-cor? Trying to figure out what that inherited fam-ily stash of decorations is all about, or hoping to recreate Christmas Past (with apologies to Charles Dickens)? This is your book. Even if you already know 90 percent of what’s inside its covers, it’s good to have it all in one place. For writers (that would be me) or people looking to understand and learn more, this book is a great springboard. And for those who love all things Christ-mas, this is a “must.”

Montgomery Ward had a monopoly on Dy-Dee dolls when they were first issued, sell-ing the popular dolls in stores and through their famous Montgom-ery Ward catalogs.
It has been said that Dy-Dee dolls “literally sold by the truckloads” because “every little ‘mama’ in American wanted a Dy-Dee doll.”
Right: Effanbee, Mold 1, Dy-Dee doll in original box. This “Almost Human Doll” was offered on eBay for $102.
Above: Dy-Dee doll trade name embossed on back of doll.
LemastersFrom Front Page
Effanbee quickly expanded their drink-and wet line of dolls into the Dy-Dee family, including Dy-Dee-Wee, Dy-Dee-Ette, Dy-Dee-Kin, Dy-Dee-Baby, and Dy-Dee-Jane.
The largest Dy-Dee family doll produced was the 20-inch tall Dy-Dee-Lou.
Toys change, and by the 1970s, Effanbee had quit producing
Dy-Dee dolls, but in 1984, the company hon-ored the Dy-Dee doll with two 50th anniver-sary, commemorative edition dolls, which were only offered until Oct. 31, 1984.
In 2002, Tonner Doll Company purchased Effanbee Doll Company and began reproducing some of the old dolls, including the Dy-Dee dolls.
