It gives me great pleasure to 

greet you for the first  me as 

President of the American  

College of Oral and Maxillofacial 

Surgeons. When I reflect on how 

this organiza on has changed 

since I joined its Board of  

Regents, I am most proud of 

how much we have grown. We have experienced: 

Growth in the number of educa onal offerings and 

the number of OMSs who turn to us for their  

ongoing educa onal needs; 

Increased membership, from a shrinking organiza‐

on to one with posi ve growth in number of  

Fellows and more ac ve Resident Members than 

every before; 

Expansion of our rela onships with other organiza‐

ons serving our specialty, with leaders from  

AAOMS, and several other na onal and interna on‐

al organiza ons a ending our most recent Annual 

Conference;  

Growth in our reputa on which, though difficult to 

quan fy, was shared with me over‐and‐over again 

at our Annual Mee ng by a endees and faculty 

alike; 

Greater financial stability which will allow us to be 

prepared for even bigger things in the coming 

years. 

I owe a sincere THANK YOU to my predecessors,  

par cularly our Immediate Past President, Chuck  

Hasse, for leaving me an organiza on on such solid 

foo ng and poised for even more progress. Our 2014‐

15 Officers and Regents are a fantas c team of  

energe c, forward‐thinking leaders who, along with 

our commi ees of dedicated volunteers, fill me with 

high expecta ons for the coming year. 

The unprecedented number of high‐quality educa onal 

offerings that the College presented last year will  

con nue through the 2014‐15 term. Our Commi ee for 

Con nuing Educa on is already planning for at least 

seven in‐person educa onal events. More informa on 

will be coming soon about hands‐on courses focused 

on TMJ, Implants, and Faceli s, our Third Annual Resi‐

dents Mee ng, Second Annual Ski Mee ng, Third  

Annual Recer fica on Review Boot Camp, and of 

course our 36th Annual Scien fic Conference and Exhi‐

bi on in Fort Lauderdale.  Addi onally, the Commi ee 

is determined to introduce web‐based CDE offerings to 

enhance the value of your membership and allow you 

to earn credits on your own schedule.

Our Communica ons Commi ee will be  

implemen ng changes in 2014‐15 to bring greater 

depth of content to the ACOMS Review newsle er, 

including surgical and prac ce management topics. 

They will also take responsibility for developing new 

offerings for our web site, working closely with the 

CCE on web‐based CDE program.  

Finally, as an OMS Residency Program Director I care 

very deeply about engaging residents and academic 

faculty to share with them the educa onal benefits of 

this organiza on. We already offer free membership 

and significantly reduced registra on to most 

mee ngs and courses for OMS residents, as well as 

opportuni es to get published, win prizes, and gain 

speaking experience. Academic faculty members may 

take advantage of half‐price dues and a suite of  

benefits for both themselves and their trainees. I 

firmly believe that every Program Director should be 

a Fellow of ACOMS, as should every OMS resident 

and I will be working with our Membership Com‐

mi ee toward this important goal.

Developing a protocol for gastrostomy tube inser on in pa ents diagnosed with head and neck cancer

Selec ng pa ents with head and neck cancer requiring a pretreatment gastrostomy feeding tube is not 

straigh orward. The nutri onal status and func onal deficits associated with the cancer, its treatment, and 

the long‐term side effects predicate the need for gastrostomy tube placement. However, gastrostomy tubes 

are not without morbidity and are an added burden to the pa ent. The aim of this retrospec ve case series 

review was to evaluate the clinical characteris cs of newly diagnosed pa ents with head and neck cancer 

treated with cura ve intent having gastrostomy placement, with the intent of developing a protocol to help 

with the  mely selec on of pa ents for pretreatment gastrostomy inser on. A gastrostomy tube was placed 

in 32% of pa ents. A regression model iden fied 5 independent factors (P < .001) to predict gastrostomy 

tube placement: overall clinical stage, tumor site, clinical T stage, pa ent age, and clinical N stage. A protocol 

to help the mul disciplinary team to decide whether a pretreatment gastrostomy tube should be placed is
