Making A Difference, 1 Film At A Time

Who Are We?Kids in the Spotlight, Inc. (KITS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in May 2009. Our program trains youth in the foster care system ages 11-18, to create, write, cast, and star in their own short films. This training culminates in an annual film festival and awards celebration, where we present “Movies By Kids, For Kids.”

We are turning kids fear and pain into hope for the future.

Our Impact

Meet Ashley, a young lady who was in foster care as result of substance abuse and rebellion until she was introduced to Kids in the Spotlight. She tells the story better than anyone else.

Our ImpactMeet Kathy, a young lady who had been a victim of sex abuse but found her voice during Kids in the Spotlight to testify against her predator. Her attorney wrote this letter. It was during her 10 week sessions with Kids in the Spotlight that Kathy wrote her CSEC story in the hopes of having it selected to be made into a short film. She told me that she hoped to share her story so that others would not walk down the same path. Sharing her story in this setting exposed her feelings about her past and helped her to have a creative outlet to express her troubled emotions. The program allowed her to filter these raw emotions into the joint group project that ultimately became “Drizzle of Hope.” Watching Kathy’s performance on screen was mesmerizing. Her depiction of a child left with an uncaring foster family after being abandoned by her mother was touching and sadly a little too true to life. I spoke with the director and producer of the film after the ceremony and they were enthusiastically encouraging Kathy to continue with acting classes through their professional agencies. They too were moved by her performance. While the performance on screen was amazing, it was Kathy’s behavior after that I am most proud to share with you. Kathy exhibited poise and grace as her name was called to receive the Best Actor Award. Despite being surrounded by a packed room of strangers that included Hollywood industry executives and celebrities, this soft spoken, surprised and nervous 15 year old girl made an incredibly humble, polished, controlled and moving speech. She truly shined. These are the moments that we as adults know come few and far between. It would have been an incredible shame had she missed it. Thank you again for allowing her to experience this incredible moment in time and letting her finish the journey that she started with Kids in the Spotlight.
