WHAT IS AN EBOOK? A eBook (electronic book) is a paperless book that
can be downloaded and read on your palm pilot, eBook reader, laptop, or even mobile phone.
The eBook may prove to be the best invention for readers since Gutenburg’s printing press in 1450.

While most eBooks are also available in print, there is a growing trend where eBooks are only available electronically.
The most notable instance was in 2000 when Stephen King released his short story Riding the Bullet only as an eBook. Many new authors self-publish their books in an electronic format, cutting out the middle men of agents and publishers.

THE EBOOK HAS MANY ADVANTAGES OVER THE PRINTED BOOK
Inexpensive – many classics are free, thousands of books are around $2, and most best sellers are $10.
You no longer need to store dozens of books, up to 2,000 can be kept on one small eBook reader.
Some eBook readers include free WiFi so you can download your books straight onto your reader, and not need to access a computer.
They are linked to a dictionary, so you can instantly look up any unfamiliar word.
You can copy and paste text onto your eBook reader’s notepad, and when you look at it later it is fully referenced.
Saving paper, including all the new books that aren’t sold that get pulped.
You can adjust the font size, or have the eBook reader read aloud for you.
No driving to the store to buy your book No replacements are needed due to wear and
tear – especially good for a library
Warehousing and Transporting of Books
The environmental benefits are huge
HOW ARE EBOOKS IMPACTING EDUCATION?
STUDENTS
Read and revise anywhere. In the dark, on the train, while standing in line.
No more carrying around heavy bags. Studies have proven the negative affects heavy bags have on students backs.
Allows for universal access – whether it be on their ebook reader, digital library, school web site
Beneficial to students when English is not their first language – text to speech, multi language dictionary Instant access to almost any book. You don’t
have to leave your home or wait for books to be shipped out to you. Updates can also be made easily.

Great for all learning styles– ebooks can allow for a combination of text, images, video and audio to provide an interactive experience for users

THE FUTURE
“While campus libraries and some college stores already have experience with e-books, the influence of e-books will expand and mature in the next few years.” (Nelson, 2008)
