We have already been quite busy working all summer on our first auction since late May, an auction that will be held on September 19 th and 20 th at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. This is no ordinary auction and will be one of the greatest auctions we have presented since we began auc- tioning in the great city of Hong Kong in 2008, which is a very bold state- ment. Yet as you finish reading through this catalog, I am confident that you will agree with what I just wrote. One look through this catalog will show why Acker Merrall continues remain the firm in Hong Kong to which the world’s greatest collectors consign their collections. Speaking of which… On Friday evening September 19 th , plan to arrive early at the Grand Hyatt or be ready via our Acker Live web site to bid because our first Featured Col- lection, Lots 40-192 is a remarkable collection of Burgundy and Bordeaux’s finest. A collection filled with classic wines from the world’s very best. If Burgundy is your passion you’ll find among the many DRC treasures a very rare 12-bottle case of the famous 1978 La Tache, yet it is Bordeaux that has been this great collector’s most intense focus. Many of the Bordeaux offered are in OWC and many too are in magnums and large formats. It’s a roll call of incredible First Growths and Super Seconds, from many famous vintages including some older treasures. If you are a lover of exceptional Bordeaux, both to collect for the future and to drink now, this is a don’t miss collection! Lots 193-224 present the most sought after Domaines of Burgundy: Rousseau, DRC, Dujac, Liger-Belair and Leroy. Within this great collection are five vintages of the increasingly rare DRC Assortments, all in OWC, a vertical of Rousseau Chambertin and Liger-Belair’s great La Romanee from two of his most famous vintages. You also will see five vintages of Le Pin’s tiny production, a nineteen-vintage vertical of Petrus from 1990- 2010 and three vintages of Petrus (2000, 2008, 2010) in OWC. These are the greatest names of France and we are very proud to represent this collection, where almost every wine was bought directly from the importer. You can’t get better than that! The journey through our next Featured Collection is all about Burgundy and Champagne, even though we begin with a few cases of rare Haut Brion Blanc. Lots 225-350 is a journey through the glory of Pinot Noir and Char- donnay, starting with fourteen lots of Rousseau Chambertin! There is case after case of magical vintages from Dujac, Vogue, DRC, Leroy, Ponsot, Leflaive and Coche-Dury amongst others before we make our way to Champange. Nearly 50 lots of Champagne end this connoisseur’s delight with bubblies such as 1985 Krug Clos du Mesnil, 1964 Roderer Cristal and a jero of 1973 Pol Roger to name but a few of the many. This is a flat -out great collection, lot after lot, case after case of the elite names of Burgundy and Champagne. Next up is a very special and unique collection for our clients in Hong Kong, from one of Europe’s very greatest wine merchants, the Grafe-Lecocq family of Belgium. Beginning in 1879, four generations of the family-owned business have bought the top chateaux of Bordeaux directly in bottle as well as in barrel, as well as many of the most famous and sought after Domaines of Burgundy, particularly their cousins the Drouhins. The care that the Grafe-Lecocq family has brung to these wines is unparalleled, having some of the most ideal ACKER MERRALL & CONDIT (ASIA) WINE MERCHANTS SINCE 1820

caves in Europe. We are extremely proud that they are offering a part of their perfect cellars to our clients in Hong Kong. This is as good as it gets when it comes to provenance. Lots 351-399 are once-in-a-lifetime lots!
Friday night isn’t over by a long shot, but I need to save room to talk about two Featured Collections on Saturday that comprise amazing wines from two wonderful men and world class collectors. You absolutely do not want to miss these offerings.
Lots 684-728 come to us from ‘The Chairman,’ a man who knows his wine as well as he does his invest-ments. His collection is a rolodex of who’s who and when’s when of the fine wine world. There aren’t many people who can pull out a full case of 1961 Latour a Pomerol, which is now one of the most quietly famous, and most aggressively sought after wines of the famous 1961 Bordeaux vintage. Same could be said in a slightly more modern tense for the case of 1988 Le Pin that follows, and this collection also holds incredible case lots of famous Yquem, Rousseau and 20 cases alone of DRC; I repeat, 20 cases alone of DRC…and far more. Every lot and bottle has been ideally stored by ‘The Chairman.’
As if everything previously mentioned wasn’t enough, we have 120 lots (Lots 729-849) from one of the world’s most famous and respected collectors, Wilf Jaeger, aka The Connoisseur Who Would Be King. Last year’s selection sent bidders into a frenzy like only HK can, and we can’t imagine every successful bidder not being back for more. Wilf Jaeger is one amongst his generation whose name and incredibly deep collec-tion will be talked about in the future with both respect and admiration. Everyone always tells me they wish they bought more every time he decides to thin out a bit! There is literally nothing in his cellars in the US and France that is not great, and to say this is a collection is that we are proud to offer to you does not do that word justice. To have known him personally and professionally for well over a decade is one of my life’s great pleasures, and we have left a trail of empty bottles together, some of which are my greatest memories. Don’t have regrets, and enjoy his collection to the fullest.
There is so much more available in our second session, but I am sure I will see you at this auction. It will be one to remember.
In Vino Veritas,
John Kapon
