The earliest recollection of Achilles School centers on a log cabin (across the road from the present school site) that was replaced around 1903 by a building with four rooms. As enrollment grew, additions were made until around 1910 when the building was about doubled in size. At that time three girls enrolled in the new freshman class later graduating in 1914. During the next twenty years, the area continued to grow; therefore, the physical plant was enlarged numerous times. Much of the work was accomplished by the efforts of the local citizens served by the school. The curriculum was expanded, competitive sports were organized, and a school cafeteria was begun. Due to consolidation in 1953, the high school department of Achilles was transferred to the new Gloucester High School. Achilles then became an elementary school serving grades 1 - 7. The old Achilles was replaced in 1966 by the current physical plant. In 1975, the Gloucester Building and Renovation Program was completed including a new high school, renovation of all other schools, and the establishment of a middle school serving grades five and six. Beginning September 1976 Achilles start- ed housing kindergarten through grade 4. Achilles, along with the other elementary schools, began serving kindergarten through grade 5 in 1986. Construction began in May 2004 on an addition that included a gymnasium, a new media center, eleven classrooms, and art and music rooms. The reception, administrative, and kitchen/ cafeteria areas were also renovated at this time. The completion of the project in the fall of 2005 provided a learning community that almost doubled the size of the original building. Achilles now serves students and their families in Preschool through 5 th grade. Most recently, the lighting, ceilings and HVAC system were updated during Summer of 2015. The building has a new look and provides comfort to all stakeholders. Wireless updates continue to improve technology accessibility to students and the community, providing a quality facility for all. Achilles Elementary School faculty and staff provide all students with the opportunity to become responsible, self-directed, confident, lifelong learners. School personnel, families, and members of the community work together to provide a safe, nurturing environment built on mutual respect that promotes each child’s intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. Achilles Elementary School has a dedicated and skillful staff committed to serving students and the community.

We believe that ALL students can learn. Student learning and success is maximized when instruction is individualized and appropriate to the needs and to the development of the learners. Instructional staff stays current with research-based developments in curricula, instructional strategies, and programs. Investment in a strong school-community relationship is essential to understanding prior knowledge of the students, meeting their needs, and reinforcing their educational goals. The strength and success of Achilles is reflective of the loyalty, support, and dedication of all key stakeholders.
