Fox C-6 Board of Education2011 - 2012

From the Superintendent...Supporting the Future Growth of Our Schools

Dear Fox C-6 Community Members,

The ending of a school year is always marked by change. As with any progression, I think it’s valuable for staff, administration, and Board of Education to reflect on where they have come and what goals have been accomplished. It’s important for us to not only evaluate what our students have learned, but what we have learned about ourselves- as a school community from the experiences of the school year.

Upon these reflections, I feel it is time to place a NO Tax Increase Bond Issue on the August 7, 2012 election date. I want to express my sincere appreciation for the unconditional support that has been extended to our students over the years. It is clear that it has made a tremendous difference in student performance. As the school year comes to a close, we have much to be appreciative for and many reasons to celebrate. For the eleventh year in a row, the Fox C-6 School District earned the state’s prestigious “Distinction in Performance Award” with a perfect score. ACT scores are at an all time high and the dropout rate is at an all time low. It is clear that our students are working hard to be successful.

This year we will be asking you to extend your support on an August 7, 2012, NO Tax Increase, $18,500,000 Bond Issue to improve the learning conditions for all students. The district is now being challenged with many of our buildings requiring extensive repair and renovation. New technology needs to be acquired so our students can compete in this ever changing world.

We have experienced firsthand our students and staff excelling when competing against their peers from around the state and the nation. It goes without saying, that we have many brilliant students, staff, and community members in the Fox C-6 School District. It is apparent that our students are taking pride in their achievement, and it is important that the community provides our students with facilities they can continue their success.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dianne Critchlow, Superintendent of Schools

Dear Parents:

On August 7, 2012 the Fox C-6 School District will place an $18,500,000 NO TAX INCREASE Bond Issue on the ballot. The Bond issue will be for the purpose of acquiring technology equipment; repairing, renovating and improving existing school facilities and furnishing and equipping the same; purchasing school buses and converting the existing athletic facilities into multipurpose facilities.

The BOARD OF EDUCATION BELIEVES the need for this Bond Issue is clear.

Another serious problem facing the school district is the need to renovate old school buildings. Many of our buildings have been in service for over 30 years. These older buildings are not energy efficient, are in need of repair, do not have infrastructure to support current instructional technology and do not provide students with an environment that is conducive to learning.

The BOARD OF EDUCATION BELIEVES the time is right.

With an August Bond Issue the district will be able to complete both construction and renovation projects by the 2014-2015 school year. The district need is immediate. Waiting longer will only compound a growing problem of much needed renovations.

The BOARD OF EDUCATION BELIEVES the price is right.

The Bond Issue will not increase your school tax levy, and interest rates are at historic lows. This will allow the district to complete these projects more economically for the taxpayer. The Board of Education has a responsibility to provide facilities that are safe and conducive to learning. We believe that your children are worthy of this investment. Please give the proposition your close attention on August 7, 2012.

Sincerely,

Linda Nash, President

Over Half a Century of Excellence

D istrict administrators and the Board of Education honored retirees at a banquet on May 4th at the

Fox Service Center.

In all, 30 district employees are retiring at the end of this school year or have taken an early retirement. This year’s retirement banquet was the third year of being produced in coordination with the CTA and NEA organizations that support teachers in our district.

Retirees included many teachers, aides, bus drivers, cooks, and maintenance workers. Mary Ellen Collins retires from her position in the Diagnostic department with 39 years of service. Alan Emerson served the district as Assistant to the Superintendent for Technology for 13 years. Art teacher Mary Dunn retires after 31 years in the district. In all these retirees represent a combined total of almost 700 years of dedication to the district.

Each retiree was invited to come forward and be recognized for their service by representatives of the Board of Education, district administration and the CTA and NEA. A brief video was shared marking the highlights of the district careers of the 18 retirees in attendance and their plans for retirement.

B ridges unveiled a year-long service learning project to honor local veterans on May 3. 2012. Named the “Pole of Hope”,

it is a flag pole as well as a memorial and recognition of those in the Fox C-6 School District family who have served or are serving in our nation’s armed forces.

The genesis of the project grew from the recognition that Bridges students did not have a flag of their own for when they said the Pledge of Allegiance. Students in the alternative high school also were interested in doing something to honor their local veterans. At Risk Programs Director Jamie Critchlow, who serves as their principal, saw a perfect opportunity to grow this into a genuine service learning opportunity.

The project quickly became more than just building a flag pole. Guided by Mr. Critchlow and the Bridges staff, students dove into the study of the military and its role in our society through classroom-based projects. In Language Arts, students wrote letters to veterans and read literature to select an appropriate quote for the granite plaque that was to be included. Science classes included lessons on the technology of warfare. Social Studies covered our country’s involvement in conflicts across the globe and throughout history. Math students studied the plans for the pole, the granite memorial and plaque.

Local businesses such as Gsell Concrete, Star Flooring and Granite Busters donated time and materials and the district’s own Maintenance Department was invaluable in putting a lot of time and effort towards the construction. Mr. Critchlow also credits his students and staff.

Mr. Critchlow expects that the monument will only grow in the future as Bridges students further their education.

If this boy’s basketball season was a movie it would be titled “Youth and Gaining Experience!” The Warriors started no seniors, two sophomores and at times had three sophomores on the court.

This showed as the Warriors almost pulled the upset of the season by beating Lindbergh in the first round of district play losing 52-50. This shows that next year can be a bright one for the Warriors as everyone is returning.

The Warriors were lead in scoring by Tyler Brewer with 12.4 points a game and Andrew Moorehead with 8.3 points a game. All Conference: Honorable Mention: Tyler Brewer and Andrew Moorehead All Defensive Team: Tyler Brewer

The Fox Girls Track team has shown great improvement throughout the season.

Each week we achieved team and individual goals we set. Many athletes medaled and broke their personal records regularly at meets.

We as coaches are proud to work with a group of such hardworking and dedicated girls! We look forward to the future and hope to continue to grow the success of the program.

The Fox High Golf team performed well this year, with several of our returning players improving on their previous scores from last year. We look forward to continued success next year with our players!

The Fox Varsity baseball team had an up and down season. They were in a difficult conference in which they lost several games by one or two runs.

With a successful Junior Varsity team filling in for the graduating seniors, the Warriors are looking forward to improving for next season.

In Step with the Fox High Marching Warriors

T here’s a large group of students at Fox High that show up at athletic events, parades, community events and competitions.

They don’t carry a bat, a throw a ball or wear a helmet but they do come ready to compete for excellence. They are the Fox High Marching Warriors.

“The lessons you can learn in marching band are important,” remarked Matt Rice, one of the two band teachers at Fox High School. “You need good student leaders who can work together and motivate their sections. There’s a lot of discipline as well.” The marching band spends as much time practicing in the summer and fall as their fellow sports teams and their schedule during the year is just as packed, according to Mr. Rice.

In addition to playing at sporting events, parades and other community venues, the marching band participates in four to six competitions every year.

Competitions involve more than playing a few popular tunes and lining up in formation. This past year the Warriors presented the theme of “Fluid Motion.” Their goal was to evoke the idea of water in its many states both musically and visually. Musical arrangements were written specifically for this theme, costumes and uniforms assembled, props selected and movements choreographed. A staff-led committee develops the theme each year in coordination with band members.

“Competition is used as a motivating tool to get our kids excited,” said Mr. Rice. Their excitement is evident in placing second at three competitions culminating with a fourth place showing at the Greater St. Louis Marching Band Festival.

Next year’s theme is “Breaking Out” as the band musically and visually explores the concepts of struggling for freedom. The Marching Warriors will also join the marching band from Seckman High to play the National Anthem at Busch Stadium for a Cardinals baseball game on August 15th.

Varsity’s record is 7-11 going into a conference match today (4-26) vs. University City. A win would put the Jaguars at 2-3 in conference with 2 remaining conference matches.

The team is being paced offensively by multiple players- Nate Richardson, Ryan Morris, Zack Pelker, and Ben Ingenthron. Zack Pelker also splits time with Mike Vitale dishing out the ball to these hitters. The Jaguars have a solid defensive group of guys lead by Josh Thomas, 4th year varsity player.

The team is still looking for consistency and that statement win. Hopefully it will all come together on the home stretch allowing us to finish with a 4-3 conference record and a .500 overall record.

This season we have been fortunate to enlist the most freshmen we have had in years. With the culmination of having 12 seniors, the pack is working hard in making success happen at every meet. We have already broken 3 school records: Maranda Akers Pole Vault of 9-8, 4x100 Relay of Maranda Akers, Allison Cruts, Gabi Cruts and Alyssa Carlton, and Katelyn Evans in the 3200 with 12:03. The girls are bringing home multiple medals and scoring large quanities of points at each meet. We even took home a first place trophy at Oakville Relays a few weeks ago. As the season progresses, yet winds down, we are looking forward to Districts, Sectionals and of course state.

The Lady Soccer Jaguars finish up the regular season 9-8. The Jaguars are led in scoring by Taylor Giese with 12 goals and 5 assists totaling 29 points. Donna Jolliff scoring 26 points on 11 goals and 4 assists, Jessica Smugala equaled Jolliff’s point total with 10 goals and 6 assists. Freshman Alli Diekmann made a name for herself scoring 3 goals and 5 assists. Sophomore goalie Hannah Spraul played in the net every minute of every game racking up 9 wins with 5 shutouts. The team in looking forward to challenging for a district championship.

The Seckman Boys’ golf team completed the season with a 3-6 match record.

Tanner Harry, a junior, earned 1st team All-Conference honors. He also did well in tournaments, such as an 8th place finish in the Mehlville tournament.

Most notably, he advanced to the Sectional tournament, where he fell just short of a bid to the State Championship tournament. Jordan Demmon, a sophomore, earned 2nd team All-Conference honors.

Seniors Abby Hayden, Texas Crowe, and Shelbey Stuckmeyer helped lead the way. Abby Hayden received honors such as Athlete of the month, two All tournament teams, Suburban South 2nd Team All Conference, and All District 1st team. Abby also finished her career with 119 three pointers to tie the all time school record. Shelbey Stuckmeyer, Texas Crowe, and Kori Farmer received Suburban South Honorable Mention honors.

T he Jaguar Wrestling team made it all the way to the State Championships this season, where they placed third overall.

The season began with few question marks as one of their placers from last year, Blake Pepper, was injured in football during the fall. Any question marks that arose from Pepper’s absence were erased by the rest of the team. “It was a pretty significant effort from everyone,” said Coach Cody Greene. “They have really stepped up this year.”

The Jaguars started out their year by beating Francis Howell in a dual meet, which is something they had never done before. They wrestled well as the season progressed but really saw their greatest efforts after Christmas. They placed third at St. Charles West and won the All-Suburban Conference tournament and their own tournament.

They won Districts with Jackson taking a close second and had five wrestlers in the top four at State. Weston Basler and Luke Weiland placed second and fourth as freshman and Coach Greene looks forward to their contributions next year. The Jaguars will return more points from state that in past years.

Fox C-6 News & Views8 Summer 2012

T he third grade students at Antonia Elementary

recently participated in a Service Learning Project. The students created monetary goals and had to complete chores and jobs at home or around their community to reach their goal.

The students had a two-week period to complete their jobs. In the classroom, they worked on using scale to determine length of trips to various Missouri cities, computing tank capacity for various types of vehicles, comparing prices of different grades of gasoline, designing their own vehicle, and writing a letter to their teacher about these experiences.

They also partnered with U-Gas in Barnhart. They agreed to match the total sum of money our third graders collected. The students raised an amount of $760. Selected students distributed $10 gas gift cards to unsuspecting customers to use as they wish. A total of 152 gift cards will be given out.

Our goal was for the students to actively participate in helping our community while learning skills that will benefit them as caring, productive citizens. A secondary goal is to promote a concept of “paying it forward,” and showing others that random acts of kindness are one way we can reach out to our neighbors.

R ockport Heights Elementary has raised $26,700 this year for Jump Rope for Heart and will once again be the number one

school in Missouri for the fourth year in a row. Every year their Jump Rope for Heart program has increased.

Fox School District is also raising more money for the American Heart Association than any other school district in Missouri.

P.E. teacher Kristin Dearing has been instrumental in growing this school since she took over the coordinator’s position in 2007. Mrs. Dearing sets high goals and rewards her students when they have achieved those goals. Everyone is rewarded when the schools reaches their goal.

Because they have met the school’s goals, Mrs. Dearing and Principal Janine Hueter spent one night sleeping on the roof of the school. Kristen also plans to go skydiving as another incentive!

A rchery has been expanding as a sport across the district and our students have been demonstrating the excellence Fox C-6 is known for. Several schools have won state tournaments as a team and earned top places as individual competitors. At this year’s state tournament, our

school district won eight individual awards and three team awards.

The archery team from George Guffey Elementary won first place at the state archery tournament. This is the fourth consecutive state title for Guffey Elementary. Out of the top ten individual honors Guffey students took six. In the Girls Division fifth grade students Grace Patterson took fifth

place and A. J. MaCay achieved third place. Sixth grade student Phoebe Harris took first Place overall in the Elementary Girls Division. For the Boys Division, Josh Hoffman earned 5th place, Alex McKay took fourth place and Jordan Guilfoy received second place. All three are sixth grade students at Guffey Elementary.

Archers from Richard Simpson Elementary School took third place overall at the state tournament and sixth grader Abby Street won fourth place for individual girls.

Our middle and high schools are also taking home awards. The Ridgewood Middle School Archery Team won first place at the state tournament in Warrensburg on Saturday. The Bulldogs have been state champions in the middle school division two years in a row now.

Seckman High School also has reason to celebrate with a national qualifier their first year! Out of five shooters from Seckman High School that went to state, Tessa Suedmeyer placed third. She was just one point behind the second place finisher and four points behind the first place winner. Suedmeyer has qualified for Nationals in Kentucky this spring.
