• Many of Jackson’s friends from Tennessee followed him to Washington to beg for jobs
• Jackson fired government employees and gave his friends their jobs
• The Spoils System is a bad way to operate government
The Nullification Controversy • Tariff on imported
goods helped Northern factories
• Hurt Southern farms by raising prices on goods
• Tariff became national law, but South Carolina passed state law overriding it
• SC threatened secession (breaking away from the United States)
