“If an organization has its processes run through theirsocial network, it’s easy to see who is completing thework and when.“

“High achievers become much easier to spot andperpetual slackers will have a much more difficult timesliding under the radar.“

“This kind of accountability may not be extremelypopular to begin with, but increased transparencyin how processes are handled, and knowingexactly who does what, cannot be anything butpositive.”

Milward and Provan, in their 2006report for the IBM Center for TheBusiness of Government, observed…

"Network managers have a majorresponsibility to ensure that those whoparticipate in a network are responsiblefor their share of network activities andare held accountable for their actions."

But what constitutes "accountability"in a networked, interdependentenvironment?

“A lot goes into making a technology adoption decision, such as your current platforms, your current capabilities, what you need to be able to do.

Alignment and accountability can provide valuable input in developing your technology road map and your

process and skills requirements.”

Clarify each individual’s responsibility and authority

within the scope of their role. Ensure that expectations

are clearly understood.

Make sure employees have someone to “answer to”,

not only for accountability, but also for guidance and

leadership.

Let the front line handle the details as long as progress

is made toward goals. Clarify authorities and

accountabilities if not.

Verify that the organizational structure supports

effective communication.

Establish clear lines of communication, authority, and accountability
