Computer Applications in Education Feb, 2011 Fusun Ersin ACCESS POINT What is this access point? Access point is a device which provides wireless access to a wired network. How does it work? When it is attached to a network, access point starts to transmit signals. Using this transmission, computers or devices with wireless capabilities can have wireless access to wired networks that the access point is attached to. What it is not? Access points do not have the capabilities of a router therefore in order to connect to Internet we still need modems or routers. So when you connect to Internet via public wireless network in a large place, you'll most likely be connecting to an access point to do so since the range of a possible wireless router will not be sufficient. Anything else to know? Some access points have repeater function. Repeater, as the name suggests, receives the signal sent from the wireless router and boosts it. when placed at a point where signal strength is really low, it will enhance the signal thus increasing the coverage area.
