Message from CDCFB President Daniel Miller I hope that you are having a fun and safe time vacationing and farming during these warm summer months. Chester/ Delaware County Farm Bureau (CDCFB) members have been having a busy summer with many agricultural activities being attended. Although there were some challenges this spring with getting crops planted due to wet weather, members report that the crop year is going well. We will hope for moderate temperatures and adequate rainfall for the remainder of the cropping year and a bountiful harvest this fall. Do you have a concern about current legislation affecting agriculture? Do you have an idea about new legislation that you would like to see enacted? CDCFB is hosting Policy Development meetings soon (see info in previous column). Plan to attend one of the PD meetings to voice your opinion on what Farm Bureau's legislative agenda should be for the next year. All members can bring their concerns to the table to be included in CDCFB's policies for 2019/2020. Come to discuss your concerns with fellow farmers; together we can make a difference in the state and national legislatures. Farming is a tough occupation and farmers need to be in touch with their legislators to be sure government regulations enhance, rather than hinder the farm community. Farm Bureau encourages all members to meet with their state and national legislators. You are invited to attend a Legislative Farm Tour planned for legislators on August 28 – details on next page. Farm Bureau also encourages members to communicate with those running for office to educate them about farming and what the farm community needs in legislative action to be able to thrive into the future. Those running for office could be the ones voting on Ag issues in the next legislative year. Thanks to all the members who attended the CDCFB picnic in July. I believe everyone who attended had plenty to eat and were able to relax with friends and fellow farmers. The picnic gave us the opportunity to present awards to the college scholarship winners, who will be continuing their education in ag-related studies; and presenting awards to the Safety Contest winners. All of the winners deserve a heartfelt thanks for their efforts and commitment to the future of agriculture. Thanks to everyone who supports agriculture in Chester and Delaware Counties! Is it Just the Flu, or is it Lyme Disease? Summertime and “Back to School time” comes with lots of nasty bugs, but let’s not forget about the other bugs we should look out for this fall – TICKS. Lyme disease remains prevalent throughout the fall months when deer ticks are still active. Understanding the symptoms of Lyme disease is key to quick diagnosis and treatment. Lyme disease symptoms include:

• Flu-like illness with fever, chills, fatigue • Rashes, most typically the bulls-eye rash • Facial paralysis (bell’s palsy) • Stiff neck • Aches, pain, weakness in joints and muscles • Arthritis that moves from joint to joint, or frequent

growing pains in children • Chest pain and heart palpitations • Headaches and dizziness

Many of the above symptoms are also indicators of the flu (influenza). However, the flu typically presents with sinus congestion, sneezing, and upper respiratory distress in addition to some of the above symptoms. If you have flu-like symptoms without the presence of sinus and respiratory symptoms, then talk to your doctor about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Those who engage in outdoor activities, and those with pets, are at an increased risk for tick bites. Tick bite prevention is critical! The Chester County Health Department is available for prevention programs and also community health fairs at no charge. Kudos to our Members . . . . . . the Sam Matthews family for their “Chester Springs Creamery at Milky Way Farm” which has been added to the Pennsylvania Department of Ag’s “Ice Cream Trail.” This is one of Chester County’s most popular spots for home-made ice cream made with Matthews’ dairy herd milk.

. . . Ken and Marilyn Umble of Glen Valley Farm, Atglen, have received Pennsylvania Holstein Association’s Hall of Fame award. The honor recognizes their achievements and contributions to the Holstein dairy

industry, and also their involvement and leadership in other agricultural and community activities. . . . Rep. Stephen Barrar will receive the National Guard Association’s annual Charles Dick Medal of Merit Award for his role in advancing the mission of the PA National Guard and the lives of National Guard personnel and their families. This award will be presented on Labor Day weekend at the NGA convention in Denver, CO. . . . Ivan Stoltzfus, past member of CDCFB Board of Directors, is again traveling across America on his 1948 John Deere tractor (rarely ever going faster than 15 miles per hour) to advocate for the Wounded Warriors. Stoltzfus never served in the military; he explained that his journey is his way of giving back. “As I get older, I feel like I took my freedom for granted, and I wanted to give back somehow,” he said.

‘PA Farm Bill’ Signed Into Law Governor Tom Wolf recently signed the ‘PA Farm Bill’ into law, following its passage by the General Assembly. This multi-bill legislative package, supported by PA Farm Bureau, aims to bolster the state’s agriculture sector by: Expanding conservation programs; Establishing farm-to-school grants; Allocating funding for agricultural-related emergencies

such as the Spotted Lanternfly or Avian Flu; Funding youth programs that promote development in ag; Establishing block grants to encourage farming of high-

priority crops; Expanding farms’ access to meat processing; Bolstering the “Home-grown by Heroes Program” for our

veteran farmers; Creating a center to help farmers with business and

succession planning; and Establishing low-interest loans for conservation practices.

Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau Thank you, CDCFB, for once again being a sponsor of Elk Ridge School’s “Farm Fest Day” event. The students and staff are grateful that we could spend time learning from the many knowledgeable presenters. We had a wonderful experience learning more about agriculture. It is thanks to you that we were able to have such an extraordinary learning experience. You are truly appreciated. Thank you so much!!! – Mrs. James and the Elk Ridge staff

USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue Met with Area Farmers to Discuss Ag Related Issues PA Farm Bureau and American Mushroom Institute helped organize a tour of Phillips Mushroom Farms in Kennett Square with USDA Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan. Following the tour, a panel discussion was held with Perdue, Houlahan, and PA Farm Bureau President Rick Ebert and American Mushroom Institute Executive Director Rachel Roberts and other local farmers. Perdue talked much about international trade. Farmers also emphasized the importance of farm labor issues including the current H-2A program needing to be revamped to meet the needs of seasonal operations. The need was stressed for H-2A program to be expanded to provide adequate workforce for dairy and mushroom farmers (who need workers year-round). The current struggles experienced by Pennsylvania’s dairy and produce industries was also highlighted. The event, held at the Red Clay Room in Kennett Square, was well attended by local farmers, county officials, etc.

PA House Petitions Congress to Take Action to Support Dairy Farmers The PA House of Representatives unanimously passed two resolutions recently asking federal government to take specific action to support Pennsylvania’s struggling dairy farmers. HR222, authored by Representative John Lawrence, urges the Food and Drug Administration to enforce their own standard of identity for the term “milk” in light of the proliferation of plant derived so-called “milks.” Many believe stricter enforcement of the traditional standard definition of “milk” by the FDA would bring clarity and help protect Pennsylvania’s dairy farmers. HR402, authored by Rep. Jim Struzzi, petitions Congress to allow whole milk in public schools which have seen a drop in milk consumption after the adoption of revised nutrition standards several years ago. The unanimous consideration of these resolutions came shortly after the “Dairy Day for PA Healthy Kids” rally in the Capitol Rotunda, attended by hundreds of farmers, school children, and elected officials.

Annual Mushroom Festival – September 7-8 in Kennett Square

Don’t miss the 34nd Annual Mushroom Festival on Saturday and Sunday, September 7th and 8th. The Saturday event is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission: $3 per person (ages 12 and up). Proceeds from the sale of the admission wristbands goes to the Mushroom Festival’s grant program. In 2018, the Mushroom Festival gave $114,000 to 52 non-profit organizations. Did you know that over 65% of the mushrooms consumed in the entire United States are grown right here in Kennett Square – the “Mushroom Capital of the World”? Be sure to stop by the Chester/Del County Farm Bureau information booth to spin the Ag Wheel and win a prize. For GPS directions, use 101 South Union Street, Kennett Square PA 19348. PA Friends of Agriculture Golf Tournament CDCFB was once again a proud sponsor of The PA Friends of Agriculture Foundation’s recent Golf Classic in Hershey: over $47,000 was raised to help support agricultural education and awareness programs. Eight CDCFB members participated in the event:

[Pictured L-R: George Yarrish, Franny Sharon, Joe Fecondo and Robert Pepple]

[L-R: Michael Garrison, David Woods, Barry Hostetter and Michael Katch] The Foundation funds a variety of projects, including six Mobile Agriculture Education Science Labs, the “Ag on the Go” program and also the Educator’s Ag Institute for teachers working with youth in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. “Pennsylvania farmers want children across the state to have the opportunity to learn about farming, the environment and where their food comes from. Money raised from the golf tournament helps the Foundation achieve those goals,” said PFB President Rick Ebert.

Hello, Young Ag Professionals! – submitted by Elizabeth Chandler What a great summer! I hope all of you who made the trek to the YAP Summer Picnic in July enjoyed yourselves, as I did. BBQ, ice cream, drone tours, corn-hole tournaments,

and equipment skills’ games all made for a fun day. We hope to see you at Ag Progress Days this August as well. Look for us in the PA Farm Bureau building to learn more about how you can get involved in YAP at the county and state levels (and to enter some great raffles). Don’t forget, application deadlines are rapidly approaching for our PFB state and AFBF national competitions. Remember that September 1st is the deadline for the Achievement Award, Excellence in Ag Award, and Social Media Award. You can find the applications for these awards online at pfb.com. Also, the deadline for this year’s Discussion Meet is October 18th. The discussion meet questions are already posted on PFB’s website. Please contact me if you have any questions about the award applications or discussion meet! I am more than happy to help you fill out forms or arrange discussion meet practices with entrants from both our counties and surrounding counties. Help for Next Generation Farmers One of PFB’s key legislative priorities – the proposal that aims to help the next generation of Pennsylvania farmers get established – has “crossed the finish line.” Governor Tom Wolf signed Senate Bill #478 in early July, following passage by the General Assembly. PFB worked with state Senator Elder Vogel to introduce the legislation, which establishes an income tax credit for landowners who lease or sell land, buildings and/or equipment to beginning farmers. The bill allows for a one-time tax credit for property sold to a beginning farmer or a multi-year credit for property leased. The tax credit could be used to aid in family transitions—such as sales from a parent or grandparent to a child or grandchild—or to help an unrelated beginning farmer. The bill outlines criteria defining a beginning farmer, excluding individuals who have been engaged in farming for more than 10 years. For every four farmers in Pennsylvania that are age 65 or older, there is only one farmer under the age of 35. PFB believes that helping young farmers pick up the reins and get established is critical to continuing Pennsylvania’s agricultural legacy. And with no neighboring states offering such program, PFB believes a tax incentive in Pennsylvania could make the state a regional leader in agriculture.

Sharing Recent Incredible Headline!! When you read Duncan Allison’s report in next column, you will see that what he is saying is actually happening right now! Burger King has now begun selling their plant-based (soy-based burger) after their successful test run in several markets. The incredible headline reads “Impossible Whopper Served Up Nationwide.” Through August, Burger King will now offer an original Whopper and an Impossible Whopper – both for just $7 – so that folks can compare them. The Impossible Whopper has a suggested retail price of $5.59 – that’s 50 cents more than a regular meat Whopper with cheese.

Farmers Facing Challenges – by Duncan Allison Farmers from across the country have every reason for concern at the moment. Agriculture is still the #1 industry in PA and Chester County, however, this diverse, critical and major industry faces many challenges. Net farm income has dropped nearly 50% during the past five years due to several different factors, and farmers are facing a range of challenges. At such times Farm Bureau, the largest and most influential organization that advocates for all agriculture, plays a very critical role. The AFBF, PFB and CDCFB speak for all farmers large and small who are involved in field crops, vegetables, fruit, livestock industry, horse owners, horticulture or forestry. Markets are critical and exports have become important for field crops, particularly soybeans, several of our fruit and nuts, dairy, meat and poultry products. The trade “wars” resulting in tariffs imposed on our farm products by China and other countries have significantly impacted farm exports so that export sales have been reduced. Farmers are not only dependent on markets but also on the weather which has been bringing higher temperatures and heavy rainfall storms in some areas causing delayed planting and severe flooding. Climate change is very evident. Today farmers have to be much more involved in marketing and understand very precisely their markets and productions costs and their affordability for the machinery that can carry out timely planting, spraying and harvesting. Government regulations are constantly evolving to ensure more sustainable practices that maintain the health and produc-tivity of the land and avoid pollution of our streams and rivers. Consumers are more aware of their health and wellness today and sales of organic foods are increasing and interest is growing in meat products that are not derived from livestock. Finally the average age of farmers is 58 so there is an effort to attract youth to farming by, for example, enabling farmland to be given to family members without incurring state taxes. Farm Bureau staff are active at the national and state levels both supporting and introducing legislation that will help to support farmers at this challenging time. It is critical that this vital work continues. Remember our food supply is at stake – plentiful, safe, healthy and relatively inexpensive food. Your continued support of Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau is critical at this time! Reminder: Your Voice Can Help Dairy Farmers Your voice and less than five minutes of your time could help put whole milk back in schools and stop non-dairy beverages from being labeled as “milk.” Farm Bureau members have an opportunity to encourage representatives in Congress to support PA’s dairy industry. Please respond to PFB’s “Action Request” to contact your representative about co-sponsoring the School Milk Nutrition Act, Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, and Dairy Pride Act. If your representative is already a co-sponsor, please make sure to thank them via the Action Request. The bills would allow flavored and unflavored whole milk to be offered in schools, expand milk options in schools by reaffirming a recent USDA regulation offering schools the option of serving low-fat flavored milk, and prevent non-dairy products from being labeled with dairy terms such as “milk,” “yogurt,” and “cheese.” Please visit www.pfb.com/ActNow to contact your representative today.
