Accelerators at CCLRC• DL and RAL created as particle physics laboratories
• 40+ years expertise in electron and proton accelerators
• Design, build and operate Large User Facilities• latterly photon and neutron sources: SRS + ISIS (+HELIOS)
• Develop next generation solutions• DIAMOND, ESS, 4GLS, …….
• Underpinning R&D programmes
Cockcroft Research Workshop - Jul04 M W Poole
CCLRC Accelerator Organisation• Accelerator Science and Technology Centre (ASTeC) created
in 2001. Now 40 staff - accelerator specialists only
• Autonomous Centre within CCLRC (Oversight Boards)
• CCLRC continues support (40 FTE in 2003/04) to DLS Ltd with both design and procurement assistance
• ASTeC supplied 10 FTE (in 2003/04) (including 3 Group Leaders)
• Support now reducing greatly (4 FTE ASTeC)
• DIAMOND commissioning support ??

Insertion Device Technologies
Electromagnets
Superconducting magnets
Permanent magnets
Typical periods required ~ 20 - 500 mm
Typical fields required ~ 0.5 - 10 T
See talk by Duncan Scott later

New Generation Light Source• Strong UK communities exploiting existing advanced storage
ring and ‘table top’ laser facilities (SRS, ESRF, CLF)
• DIAMOND will serve the x-ray community from 2007 (XFEL ?)
• Low energy (< 100 eV) requires a separately optimised source
• Users have identified the need to supplement transverse brightness by compression longitudinally - fs pulses
• Many scientific applications need multiple sources– eg pump-probe

PPARC Funds for CCLRC (3 years)
• Total funds £4.5M (75% LC, 25% NF)
• Staff support £3M (ie ~40 sy)
• ASTeC gets £2.4M to cover staff
• This covers both LC and NF activities
• SLA about to be signed with CCLRC (ASTeC)

TESLA Linear Collider Scheme
TeV centre of mass

LC-ABD Collaboration
• Linear Collider studies now organised in UK largely through LC-ABD Collaboration with HEIs
• Strategic decision to concentrate on Beam Delivery System
• Major PPARC funding initiatives (ca £10M next 3 years)
• ASTeC takes lead in Beam Dynamics and in Magnet and RF Technology
• Further major ASTeC role in Beam Diagnostics
Cockcroft Research Workshop - Jul04 M W Poole
LC Work at ASTeC
• Beam dynamics* (ASTeC team formed)
• Polarised positron source (undulator)
• Crab cavities
• Diagnostics
* see talk later by Deepa Angal-Kalinin

ASTeC Funded LC ProgrammeExtrapolated SR02 funds from OST = £6M over next 3 years
Policy directives:• 25% on LC programme: £1.5M• £500k to be available directly to promote HEI studies• LC-ABD support must be demonstrated• Priority to synergetic activities (eg Light Sources)
Decisions on work packages:– Collimation– Longitudinal bunch diagnostics– BPM R&D
Cockcroft Research Workshop - Jul04 M W Poole
ASTeC Funded Collaboration Packages (3 year)
1. Collimation (ASTeC/Lancaster)• wake field simulations + possible experiments• £500k (inc RA)
2. Temporal Profile (ASTeC/Abertay)• electro-optic developments (+ small SP support)• ultrafast laser for tests• £600k (inc RA)
3. Advanced BPMs (ASTeC/Cambridge/UCL)• use in high precision spectrometry• £250k (inc RA)
NB CCLRC will also fund international advisory panel

Issues for ASTeC• Establish strategic baseline funding
• Recognise need for ASTeC infrastructure - and invest
• Progress Cockcroft/ASTeC
• Establish detailed case for SRF investment (NWSF bid)
• SR04 bid made for ATF at Daresbury
• Caution on FP6 initiatives
Cockcroft Research Workshop - Jul04 M W Poole
Possible New Collaborative Research Topics• Advanced beam dynamics
