Principal’s Report

Sara Davey - Academy Principal

A warm welcome back to the Academy, I hope you all had a great Christmas and are looking forward to an even better New Year.

I am absolutely delighted to report that we have now received the final draft of the report from our recent Challenge Partners review that confirms that we are still delivering fantastic outcomes for all of our students. The review is very similar to an Ofsted inspection and you can read the full report on our website here:http://mountsbay.org/challenge-partners

One of the things that the reviewers complimented us on is our curriculum planning. This is where we show the learning journey we predict our students will take during their time with us and we express this in our Faculty Plans. If you want to see what you can expect our students to do in each faculty, you can see the plans on our website here:http://mountsbay.org/curriculum/5-year-plans.

Next week we will be opening the booking for our forthcoming production of the hit Disney adaptation of High School Musical. I have had the privilege of hearing some of the rehearsals in progress as I pass through the Performance Centre and we are all really looking forward to seeing the show come to life on stage.

Also next week look out for our new format newsletter “Standing Out - The Magazine for Mounts Bay Academy” which will be as usual packed with stories and reports of all the outstanding things that we do every day here at Mounts Bay.

I look forward to reading it!

Student Book Review

Tessa is diagnosed with leukemia and despite her efforts and dedication to chemotherapy, she has discovered that she is going to die. Tessa has come up with a bucket list which she must fulfil, including some risky behaviours that she deems necessary to have "lived". Her friend Zoey is excited and supportive of her outrageous dreams.

Tessa's parents are separated and have very different views on her desire to experience the dangerous side of life. Her mother is loving and supportive whereas her father is timid and just wants to spend time with his daughter. Tessa's dad is resistant to Tessa's behaviour from the start but realises he has little influence and can only enjoy the time they have left. Tessa's brother, Cal, is a brutally honest individual who expresses varying feelings throughout the novel, ranging from lack of care, to jealousy and sadness.

One of Tessa's last wishes is to find love, which she thinks she has achieved with her neighbour Adam. Adam is shy and since his father’s death, his main priority is taking care of his sickly mother.

I think that this book was inspiring as, even though Tessa was in no condition to have a pleasurable life, she managed to execute her plan. She showed great courage and resilience in the face of adversity, not allowing her illness to stand in way of her hopes and dreams.

I would highly recommend this book which you can pick up in the library.

Amy really enjoyed reading Cuckoo’s Song by Frances Hardinge as well as her Costa award winning novel The Lie Tree, which was one of our earlier book club choices. Here is an extract from Cuckoo Song:

Word Millionaire UpdateI am delighted to announce that there are two more members of our Word Millionaire Club. Well done to Amy Jackson, 7 Red, and Lilia Rowe, 7 Green, who have enjoyed reading and quizzing on a variety of books since September. Lilia has an average of 85% on all her quizzes, which is right on target, whilst Amy has an amazing success rate of 95% on all her books read.

We have 6 copies of Cuckoo Song and The Lie Tree in our library so do come in and borrow a copy and see if you enjoy them too.

The first things to shift were the doll's eyes, the beautiful grey-green glass eyes. Slowly they swivelled, until their gaze was resting on Triss's face. Then the tiny mouth moved, opened to speak.'What are you doing here?' It was uttered in tones of outrage and surprise, and in a voice as cold and musical as the clinking of cups. 'Who do you think you are? This is my family.'

When Triss wakes up after an accident, she knows that something is very wrong. She is insatiably hungry; her sister seems scared of her and her parents whisper behind closed doors. She looks through her diary to try to remember, but the pages have been ripped out.Soon Triss discovers that what happened to her is more strange and terrible than she could ever have imagined, and that she is quite literally not herself. In a quest find the truth she must travel into the terrifying Underbelly of the city to meet a twisted architect who has dark designs on her family - before it's too late . . .

Each week the top students using the app will be awarded a prize. This is not a prize for the students who get the most questions correct; it is an engagement score as we want students to be challenging themselves.

The top 20 students are listed below.

Keep up the great work Year 11.

BECREATIVE

The Year 7 REAL 'Book Project' is progressing well now and students are working towards creating some expressive imagery to support their creative writing. The theme is 'Capturing the Spirit of a Place' and 7 Purple are focusing on the history of Marazion. One student in particular has made exceptional progress with her creativity and that is Anya Hoyle.

Artist of the Week

Anya has improved her drawing and painting skills significantly producing some wonderful line drawings using fine liner pen with a touch of water and A2 sized paintings created with sponges and rollers, then highlighted with charcoal and chalk to emphasise more detailed areas of light and dark.

Well done Anya, you have great potential!

Report by Mr Smith

This was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 7 students to see what is achievable in just a few years with hard work and dedication.

“It’s been really good fun, a great experience, and I particularly enjoyed the singing and would have liked it to be longer.” James Forshaw, 7 Purple“ ”

East High School, it’s the first day after winter break. The Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes find their cliques, recount their vacations, and look forward to the new year. In Ms Darbus’s homeroom, basketball team captain Troy discovers that Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. When he calls her, the eccentric drama teacher quickly confiscates all cell phones and assigns detention.

Between classes, Gabriella and Troy look at the audition sign-up for the school musical, but the drama diva Sharpay discourages them. At basketball practice, Troy tries to shake his desire to sing at the urging of his best friend Chad. Taylor, the science club president, discovers Gabriella’s intelligence and encourages her to join the upcoming science decathlon. While the students learn how to “act” at detention, Troy’s dad, Coach Bolton, faces off with Ms Darbus – his star players can’t miss practice for Friday’s championship game! The next day, hopeful Thespians strut their stuff for Ms Darbus but they’re no match for Sharpay and her twin brother Ryan. Troy and Gabriella arrive too late to audition, but Kelsi, the show's composer, plays the song her way and encourages them to sing. Ms Darbus overhears and gives them a callback.News spreads fast. Sharpay is furious, and some students try to break out of their cliques during lunch. Troy and Gabriella escape to the rooftop garden and share a little bit about their real selves. The Jocks and Brainiacs devise a plan to trick Troy and Gabriella into forgetting about the musical and committing to their respective competitions.

Thinking each one has betrayed the other, Gabriella and Troy are crushed. Against Ryan’s advice, Sharpay convinces Ms Darbus to move the callbacks to conflict with the science decathlon and championship game. Chad and Taylor put their heads together to make things right again. While the Jocks and Brainiacs compete, Sharpay and Ryan pull off a polished callback performance. When Taylor’s laptop shuts down the electricity, Troy and Gabriella rush to the theatre, but are too late. However, when the East High students arrive to rally behind them, Ms Darbus relents, and they sing their way into the lead roles.

Back at the gym, the Wildcats win the game and the whole school comes together as winners.

This week’s word is: Veganuary

Definition: Veganuary aims to reduce the suffering of animals by inspiring and supporting people across the globe to go vegan for the month of January.

Etymology: Donald Watson, founder of the Vegan Society, coined the word “vegan” in 1944 as a statement against vegetarians who ate dairy products. He took the first and last letters of the word vegetarian to create his orthodox version of vegetarianism.
