1 BDA INTRODUCES PRAYER STATIONS This week the chapel was transformed into an interactive space and pupils had the opportunity to engage with various ‘prayer stations’. It was excellent to see pupils writing prayers for family and friends and thinking carefully about which areas in the world they wanted to pray for before sticking a dot on a map. There were opportunities to say ‘sorry’ and to forgive others symbolically and many students said they particularly enjoyed the ‘Big Questions’ wall where they were encouraged to write down what they wanted to ask God. The prayer space will remain open at times throughout the week until half term and any students who have not managed to visit are invited at lunchtimes. Sixth form students receive Duke of Edinburgh awards Over the past few months, we have closely followed our students’ progress through the various levels of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. As such, it was with great pride we witnessed them receive their certificates at the Town Hall to mark the completion of this rigorous and rewarding scheme! 30 th January 2015

OXBRIDGE PROJECT UPDATE:
THE REFORMATION
Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Carr-Jones came
into the Oxbridge Project to deliver a talk
about music at the time of the Reformation.
For the people that do not know about it,
the Reformation, also referred to as “The
Break with Rome”, was when Martin Luther -
a German monk- wanted to change 95
things about the Catholic Church. As a
result of the 95 fleeces, the “West” (from
Croatia) was battling the “East” and many
Catholic Christians killed Protestants and
vice versa.
At the end of this first conversation we all
reflected on a Catholic saying: “As soon as
the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from
purgatory will spring”. What do you think
about it?
On a second argument about this, we
discussed how the music changed during
this period of time. For example we heard
“O, Wilhelme, pastor bone” and “Salve
Regina”, Catholic songs that monks would
sing before the Reformation. We also
learned how Protestants translated all the
songs from Latin to the language spoken in
that specific country.
In order to understand the differences
between the two, we all sang a hymn. It
was a really fun thing to do!
So thank you Mr. Carr-Jones for coming
and teaching Oxbridge and teaching us all
of these wonderful things.
