This year’s finale to Black History Month: ‘The Cultural Gala’ was a roaring success and was thoroughly enjoyed by parents and students on the last evening of term. The 6 th form and Year 11 hosts confidently lead the way in, introducing a range of inspirational dancers, speakers, singers and dramatic productions. Some of the real highlights were when the Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy took to the stage with a fabulous rendition of Nat King Cole’s ‘L.O.V.E’ and Daniela Santacruz received a standing ovation with her solo performance. The audience was captivated by some gritty and engaging Year 10 drama performances (a special thanks to the Performing Arts team and music department for their support too). The amazing array of colour and passion during the fashion show at the end really captivated the essence of the evening – a celebration of multiculturalism, identity and respect. Something all at BDA are particularly proud to be a part of. The after-show party continued into the school canteen with a wonderful selection of foods from around the world. The BDA community surpassed itself this year with food from every corner of the globe. One parent was keen to get her hands on Ms Bell’s Jamaican Black Cake recipe by the end of the evening! It was certainly one to remember. All students, staff and parents who contributed made the event a very special one indeed. 1 6 th November 2015 BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPECIAL: BDA CULTURAL GALA 2015

5 People you’d like to have over for dinner:

• Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook

• Cherie Booth QC

• Aung San Suu Kyi, Chairperson of the National

League for Democracy, Burma

• Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia

• Christine Lagarde, MD of the IMF

Get the theme.....? We could end the

global oppression of women in an evening (or

at least work out a better way forward)

4 books and films you’ll never forget:

• Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis-not totally PC but

completely hilarious novel about a History

lecturer in the 1960s!

• Down and Out in Paris and London-George

Orwell-compelling account of Orwell's

experiences as a potwasher in Paris and a

homeless person in London in the 1930s

• Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie-

long but fascinating novel about the lives of

two young Nigerians who become expats in

the UK and America

• Blackfish, directed by Gabriela

Cowperthwaite-I watched this recently. It is

about killer whales in captivity in places like

Sea World in America. Highly disturbing,

harrowing film about our complete lack of

understanding of the acceptable boundaries

regarding humans and wild animals.

3 foods you’d have for your last meal:

• Chilli salt squid

• Tuna Tataki

• Anything involving salted caramel and

chocolate!

2 places you’d love to visit:

• My wedding day, the birth of my two kids, the

day after I handed in my doctorate, so much

to remember!

Sixth form students celebrate Black History Month this term with a workshop run by SOAS on the representations of Africa in literature and the media.

A big well done to all those involved and in particular, Tori and Johnley who displayed enthusiasm and engagement to our external speaker, Dr Louisa Egbunike.

THE WORLD GOES POP! TATE MODERN GALLERY TRIP

Last week year 11 Art and Design students had an exciting and informative trip to Tate Modern Gallery to see ‘The World Goes Pop.’

The exhibition displays work from famous artists from all over the world, showing how different cultures responded to the Pop Art

movement in the 1960s and 1970s. The visit will support their GCSE Art and Design coursework.

Anyone wishing to see the exhibition can visit up to January 24th 2015. It’s free for under 12s; others pay £12.70

TABLE TENNIS UPDATE: TEAM BDA ON THE RISE

On the 12 and 19th of October, our BDA table tennis team participated at the

Borough tournament at Fulham college with the following results:

• BDA’s KS4 team won 30-8 against Fulham college and also beat phoenix Academy 20-0.

• BDA’s KS3 Second team won 25-24 .

As such, BDA won the Borough tournament for 7th time in arrow and also qualified for the West London Schools finals in December, hosted at Crest Academy.

On the 17th of October, Israel Awolaja came 3rd in the tournament after losing 1-3 in the semi-finals against James Smith - England’s number 2 cadet.

In the last week of the term, BDA played the West London Greenhouse League, beating Capital City Academy 38-12. We are sure Mr Lima loved this result!

During the half term break, Team BDA had a successful 3 day half-term programme at the academy, with an attendance of 23 students per day.

On Thursday the 29th of November, Coach Medellin took our best players to a Hub competition at Crest Academy with the following results:

Israel Awolaja won the class A competition against Sarah Mengasah from Capital city academy. Cacherel Mirjah-Mercer sadly lost in the semi-final against Sarah. Robel Berhanykun came in at 5th position in the tournament. Yassmine Al-Amrie came in 8th, and Demi Reid came 10th. All players performed and worked incredibly well in

what was the hardest event of the tournament (Class A)

In the Class B tournament, Aimey Gerald won the competition, beating a boy from Capital City Academy 3-1. Coach Medellin said:

“this is an amazing achievement from Aimey. I was expecting a good performance from her but, winning it was a pleasant surprise!”

Warren Nunn came 3rd and Kamil Williams came 4th in the competition.

As can be seen, team BDA had very good results in the first part of the table tennis season. We are very happy with the players performances so far and we would like to congratulate them for such a great start of the season.

Welcome Back! I hope you all had a wonderful half term, we have been hard at work here going through the non-fiction shelves making sure everything we have is up to date and interesting! Did anyone read any interesting books over the week!? We would love to hear about them.

On Tuesday the 17th of November we will be inviting the parents and carers of 7A, 7N, 7U, 7R to come along to their library sessions to see all the wonderful books they are reading. Do come along, it would be great to see everyone joining in and exploring literature together.

Craft Club made some amazing Halloween lanterns last term and will be working on some very festive Christmas decorations for the library this half term. If you would like to join come along at the new time of Thursday after school.

Remember to keep doing your quizzes and reading your AR books, have a great week!

Persist by Melvin Burgess

This is such a sad yet thrilling book!

Marianne lives at the hospital she cannot move she cannot speak she just lies there. Visited everyday by the same woman who claims to be her Mother and to know her

but Marianne cannot remember her. Shifting between Marianne’s thoughts and her Mothers the book tells a sad story of a mother who refuses to give up hope.

I really enjoyed this book as it was a really short and interesting read. By shifting between the two points of view the book felt exciting and fast paced so you never had a chance to get bored. Perfect for anyone who would rather read a short book and who doesn’t mind something heart-breaking!
