Academy for Leadership

and Development

Invitation to Participate

A s an MFM physician, you often are required to be a leader—

whether it’s chairing committees or departments, overseeing

research or safety projects, heading up divisions, or serving

at a regional or national level.

Many of us, however, have not been taught how to be an effective

leader. It is not in our training during medical school, residency or

fellowship. As a result, being in a leadership role can be a big bur-

den.

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) is working to ease

that burden through the SMFM Academy for Leadership and Devel-

opment. The Academy has been developed in partnership with the

Council on Healthcare Leadership and Idahlynn Karre, one of the

leading educators, writers and facilitators in the field of leadership.

Idahlynn Karre also has a special emphasis in the medical field.

We invite you to sign up for the SMFM Academy for Leadership and

Development to take advantage of a unique opportunity to garner

leadership training that may make your current position easier and

more rewarding, as well as help advance your career. As a partici-

pant, you will engage with your peers and gain critical leadership

knowledge and skills for today’s healthcare environment.

The SMFM Academy for Leadership and Development is limited to

the first 30 who sign up. The six-month learning and leading practi-

cum includes five monthly electronic leadership conversations for

individualized leadership development, as well as two residential

sessions held at the Ritz-Carlton in Denver, Colorado on October 23-

25, 2015 and April 1—3, 2016.

Please read the curriculum and Dr. Karre’s C.V. to see how powerful

the SMFM Academy for Leadership and Development will be and

the difference it can make in your career and life.

Remember, there are only 30 spaces! Sign up today so you don’t

miss this unique opportunity.

completely new way of thinking,

and has given me a skill set that I

will be able to use immediately.

my own personal strengths, and

how I can apply them to improve

my leadership skills and workplace

environment.”

“The SMFM Leadership Course

was the most productive use

of my time in many years. The

lessons that were learned

could be carried to almost

any situation and interaction.

The teaching was informative,

thought provoking, and con-

stantly enjoyable.”

Brian Iriye, MD

“As a leader, physician, and

more importantly, as a wife

and mother, my time is ex-

tremely valuable. This course

was well worth my time—both

for enhanced insight and skills

that I can utilize and share on

both a professional and per-

sonal basis. The facilitators

are skilled, knowledgeable

and passionate. I highly rec-

ommend this course to others

without hesitation. “

H ow do we prepare leaders who understand themselves,

know how to build relationships, have the skills to develop

and work with teams, think and plan critically and strategi-

cally, and connect their communities? This kind of systemic change

in leadership development needs a strong program. Participants re-

quire an intellectual base on which to build their leadership responsi-

bilities.

Leadership development must be carefully designed to broaden the

participant's knowledge of leadership theories and principles, as well

as develop supervisory and managerial skills. Training must help par-

ticipants apply leadership concepts, practices, and processes as

they relate to the needs of actual work situations. Training cannot be

conducted in a format that is isolated or disconnected from the par-

ticipant's experiential world or the context of their reality. Training

must be problem-based, with a situated learning environment rich

with authentic applications and assessments. To this end, mentoring

and coaching for success are keys to effective leadership training.

The Academy for Leadership and Development offers opportunities

to acquire and understand major research and theoretical develop-

ments in leadership. Participants have opportunities to develop profi-

ciency in selecting, integrating, and applying appropriate concepts

from social and behavioral science and adult education in formulat-

ing and implementing approaches to leadership problems and is-

sues. The Academy provides a systems approach to transformational

leadership. The program is dedicated to long-term change.

The Academy training is built upon a foundation of leadership re-

search, theory, competencies, and best practices. Training occurs

over time with measured outcomes. Leaders are mentored and

coached during the Academy by experienced Academy coaches.

Leaders are networked with mentors in their field and colleagues

from their leadership class. On-going personal and electronic conver-

sations keep leaders connected to each other, their institutions, ex-

perienced leaders, and the Academy.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

A ll Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians are being invited to par-

ticipate. Enrollment is limited to 30 participants per leadership

training program. Limiting enrollment allows for a variety of ac-

tive and collaborative learner-centered activities to be incorporated.

The Academy also advocates that leaders who participate in the pro-

gram be provided additional on-going professional development op-

portunities after completing this training program. An on-going men-

toring program and additional professional growth opportunities for

expanding their leadership roles and responsibilities within and outside

the college are several other components that are essential for a suc-

cessful college succession and leadership development plan.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY

Page 4: Academy for Leadership and Development - Amazon S3 · my leadership skills and workplace ... The Academy for Leadership and Development offers opportunities ... wellness will be discussed,

“The SMFM Leadership and De-

velopment course was an ex-

cellent professional decision for

me. Course leaders used a

thoughtfully structured curricu-

lum drawn from the field of suc-

cessful and responsible corpo-

rate leadership as well as years

of personal experience. The

course has given us the tools to

understand our role and our-

selves as leaders within our pro-

fession and within the commu-

nity. We have been provided

with the framework to under-

stand not only our own

strengths but also those of

whom we work with. We have

developed team-building ca-

pabilities that will allow us to

work to achieve our vision of

providing the best care to our

patients while working in a pro-

ductive professional environ-

ment.

I would strongly encourage all

of my colleagues to take this

course. The understanding

gained will have a multiplying

effect that is vital to our role as

true leaders in maternal and

infant well health."

Stephen Contag, MD

S ix days of leadership seminars scheduled with an initial three-

PROGRAM SEMINARS

W e welcome you to join us on A Journey in

Transformational Leadership. Our journey will

include seminars, readings, and discussions all

focused on evidence- based research and best practice

skills development in healthcare leadership. During our

residential seminars we will build a community of leaders

working together toward effective transformational lead-

ership.

Our opening seminar will introduce contemporary evi-

dence-based research and scholarship on extraordinary

and Transformational Leadership. Reviewing the research

on best of the best, we will move toward an assessment

of our own leadership and ways to continue to grow as

physician leaders.

Our studies of leadership will then focus on a seminar de-

signed to assess and leverage individual styles of leader-

ship. Understanding Leadership Style is designed to facili-

tate understanding of work behavioral style and facili-

tate understanding of “why do people behave they way

they do.” We will have the opportunity to understand the

strengths associated with our work styles and the work

styles of others. We will explore and engage in skills prac-

tices for blending and capitalizing on style for transfor-

mational leadership.

Meeting the Challenges of Transformational Leadership is

a seminar devoted to you: your vision, values, and mis-

sion and how to articulate and clarify them in interaction

with others. We will look at the demands on you - your

energy and time. Several new evidence-based books on

wellness will be discussed, assessments taken, and per-

sonal goals established. You matter. Your leadership can

only be an extension of your wellness.

Discovering and applying Strengths in Leadership will

deepen your understanding of your personal motiva-

tions, talents and strengths. Using a highly respected evi-

dence-based assessment you will find your unique moti-

vations. We will engage in activities, dialogue and dis-

cussion to enhance your understanding of strengths’

concepts. Through a process of discovery you will come

to articulate your talents and strengths and deepen your

understanding of the unique talents and strengths of oth-

ers.

Relationships matter in leadership. In fact, two prominent

scholars of exemplary leadership argue, “Leadership is a

relationship.” Building and Sustaining Strong Relation-

ships, our next seminar, will focus on the principles of

communication, emotional intelligence, credibility and

trust.

We all work on teams or in work groups. Our abilities as a

leader to set clear expectations, build strong morale,

achieve consensus in decision-making, speak truth in in-

teraction, and recognize and appreciate the work of

those around us on our teams or work groups is a critical

skill-set for physician leaders. We don’t do it alone. Know-

ing how to engage and manage team performance for

valued outcomes is critical in Leading High Performance

Teams in healthcare.

Our role as a transformational leader is one of Intentional

Influence. This seminar will investigate evidence-based

research on the science of influence and change - per-

sonal and organizational. Understanding the motivations

and abilities of our colleagues, teams, and organization

will provide a frame for intentionally building success.

PROGRAM SEMINARS—continued

Conversations that Matter will begin a three part semi-

nar series that explores our role in providing perfor-

mance feedback as a leader. Coaching and talent

management are key components of this seminar. Using

the scholarship of “what matters most at work” we will

assess our role and abilities, explore best practices and

engage in case studies and skills practice for talent

management: individual and team.

Sometimes our opinions vary from those with whom we

work. High-stacks conversations require us to speak our

truth, often to those in power. These conversations need

not be done in conflict. Crucial Conversations tools fa-

cilitate our ability as leaders to engage in difficult or

tough conversations while simultaneously building a

strong relationship with the person with whom we are

having the conversation. This introduction to crucial

conversations is an essential tool in a transformational

leader’s toolbox.

Even when we engage in conversations that matter:

establish clear expectations, manage talent, hold cru-

cial conversations as needed, sometimes we must be

able to hold others accountable. Violations in Account-

abilities at Work will introduce the crucial accountabili-

ties model. Case Studies and skills practice will help you

develop this skill-set and give you the insight to deal with

drama, toxicity, and negative behavior.

Healthcare is rapidly changing. Are you prepared to be

a leader of that change? Leading Change in

Healthcare, our next seminar, will begin with a survey of

evidence-based research in change and best practices

in leading change. After the introduction you will have

the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in

leading change in one of SMFM initiatives.

The Leadership Summit on organizational excellence will

review the findings from the Good to Great Research.

Our focus will be on using these key research findings as

a continuing guide in developing our leadership, rela-

tionships, teams, and organizations. With the research

on excellence as a source of knowledge and inspira-

tion, we will analyze organizational behaviors and prac-

tices that help transform leaders and move organiza-

tions to excellence.

Investing in relationship chemistry, speaking truth to

power, and communicating with clarity are key compo-

nents of Being a 360-Degree Leader: Leading UP, Down,

and All Around. As leaders we all need to lead up.

Whether you are leading up to a CEO, board, or adviso-

ry committee, your success - and the success of our

team and organization - depends on your ability to

communicate effectively with those in positional power.

Likewise, we must be able to communicate effectively

and lead our colleagues, co-workers, partners, and

staff. During this seminar we identify leadership issues

related to leading others regardless of position and title

in the organization.

Our SMFM Leadership Academy journey closes with a

seminar on Authentic Leadership. The content and best

practices in this seminar summarize the entire program.

Building an enduring leadership legacy requires leaders

who have a clear understanding of their purpose, prac-

tice solid values, lead with heart, establish connected

relationships and demonstrate self-discipline. This SMFM

Leadership Academy is designed to facilitate physician

leaders achieving authentic leadership.
