The Writing Process

• What steps are involved in the writing process? Which of these steps do you feel is most important and why?

The Writing Process

• The writing process is composed of four main steps. These steps are:

1. Prewriting (coming up with an idea to write about and brainstorming)

2. Drafting (putting ideas and thoughts into sentences and paragraphs) 

3.  Revising (modifying, adjusting, and/or improving ideas and style of content)

4. Editing (correcting grammar, mechanics, and/or spelling errors)

The Writing Process

The Kaplan University Writing Center is a great resource for all students enrolled at KU. It provides information, samples of work, and offers proofreading services to help students improve their writing.

Case of Charlotte

• Charlotte, who is a freshman at Kaplan University, would like to pursue a career as a social worker. She is a great listener, has a strong desire to help people, and enjoys using her critical thinking skills to assess and evaluate different information.

• Charlotte knows that there is a lot of writing required in her desired position. She will have to create case histories for her clients, write reports, and develop social plans.

• She is also aware that there will be a lot of writing required in her degree program. The problem is that Charlotte does not feel confident about her writing.

• It has been several years since she was in high school and, because she does not feel confident with her writing skills, she has the tendency to wait until the late minute to complete her writing assignments.

• Due to her procrastination and lack of confidence with the writing process, she has received mediocre grades on her writing assignments so far this term.
