Internal VUSC-IR report. Please use caution in distribution. 7 Table 3.1 Retention by major; 2012, 2013, 2014 and, 2015 (TUG)
1) Students were counted as “Returned” if they were enrolled at VU the following year, regardless of possible major change. For 2014-2015, students who changed majors from TUG to PS were also counted as “Returned,” thus making the retention % of 83.33. Otherwise, the retention % would be 82.98%.
2) Retention was calculated from September (15th
day of Fall) of previous year to September (15th
day of Fall) of the following year following the
national reporting standard.
3) Following students were excluded from the retention pool: Students who graduated at, or were accepted for commencement between Fall semester of the previous year and Spring and Summer of the following year, or Non-degree students (student at large).
*Seniors have smaller retention pool than the other class levels because students who graduated at, or were accepted for commencement were excluded from the retention pool.
Internal VUSC-IR report. Please use caution in distribution. 9 Table 4.1 Traditional UG Departments and Majors: Resident Faculty to Student Ratios 2012-2015 (as of Fall 15
1) Faculty departmental loads are based on teaching, chair assignment, or released units for research, student supervising/coaching and
sabbatical. They do not always correspond to affiliation or pay FTE. For example, faculty with 100% PS teaching are not counted toward
undergraduate department FTE, even though they are members of these departments. Undergraduate department chair load was counted as
the respective department load. Faculty with ½ undergraduate load and ½ graduate or PS load were counted as .5 for respective undergraduate
departments. Number of majors data are based on the Fall 15th day enrollment data; faculty load data are provided by the Provost office.
2) “Science” category was created to account for faculty teaching across Biology, Chemistry, Physical and Natural Science designated courses

* Programs in italics include duplicates, therefore the total number for all undergraduate programs will not add up to the sum of programs.
Internal VUSC-IR report. Please use caution in distribution. 14 Notes for undergraduate class size data interpretation:
1) The goal of this part of vitality data is to look at traditional undergraduate classes by department and in relation to faculty teaching loads.
Therefore, Cornerstone classes were included separately since they are not a part of regular load and do not always correspond to specific
departments.
2) Since 2013, classes not meeting at stated time(s) in a classroom or similar setting were excluded except online courses (e.g., Athletic classes, Internship, Practicum, Performance) to better correspond to national reporting standards.
3) In addition to separate statistics for Chemistry and Biology departments, an additional “Science” category was created to account for faculty
teaching across Biology, Chemistry, Physical and Natural Science designated courses. By request of Chemistry department, since 2012
Physical Science courses were included under “Chemistry”. Natural Science courses are included under “Biology” as well.
4) Fine Arts courses are included under appropriate departments (e.g., Music, Theatre) based on the instructors.
5) Sociology and Anthropology classes were included both separately and together to reflect class offerings of two majors within one department,
with many cross-listed courses.
6) Although class size data should be considered from a financial standpoint and it is important to reduce unnecessary spending on unjustifiably
small classes, class size data also must be interpreted in the context of academic quality. The average VUSC undergraduate class size is
26.30 for 2014, which is above the traditional national benchmark of 20 or fewer students per class considered optimal for learning. US NEWS
and World Report considers a significant percentage of small classes (under 20 students) a positive sign and a high percentage of classes over
50 a negative sign for their ranking purposes (http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/2014/09/08/best-colleges-ranking-
criteria-and-weights), therefore many colleges aim to keep their average undergraduate class size under 20. Moreover, providing a significant
percentage of smaller classes is consistent with Vanguard’s promise of quality education, and a “high touch” academic environment in which
faculty provide a lot of mentoring and nurturing of student life goals and aspiration, and which allows a fair amount of faculty-student interaction
as well as class discussion and interaction.
7) As with all programs, the percentage of classes under 10 and average class size are better indicators of program health than just the number of

Practicum) to better correspond to national reporting standards. 2) Early Childhood Education (previously Child Development Certificate Program) has not officially been a part of the Professional Studies (PS)
until 2011; reports for previous years combined these programs and they were kept together for continuity in reporting. 3) At the time of data retrieval in 2012, PS was discussing combining some of the lower enrollment course sections, which would reduce the
number and percentage of small classes. 4) When interpreting PS data it is important to keep in mind that as compared to traditional programs, PS classes need fewer students in class to
break even and to be profitable. 5) The cohort nature of PS occasionally necessitates small classes to allow students to complete program requirements.
6) The percentage of classes under 10 and average class size are better indicators of program health than just the number of classes under 10.
