MIXED USE TOWERHOUSTON, TEXAS
The Mixed Use Tower is located in the middle of Downtown with direct access to the lightrail system on Main Street and the tunnel system. It is designed to contain commercial lease space, office space, and the Holy Cross Church or a religious space to replace the existing church. Because Houston already contains almost forty megachurches and many more smaller churches, this tower contains a secular space where both the public and occupants of the building can go to get away from the busy and loud city. This atrium allows for natural ventilation and light to penetrate through the building and acts as a means of connecting public and private space through something sacred.

Shifted for More Pedestrian Space Floor Plates Shifted for Shade
Public Space The site is located on Main Street where the lightrail system comes through, bringing many visitors and workers into Downtown. The buildings first four floors are cut back where they are facing the street to create a more open and wider sidewalk area that transitions smoothly and invites the public into the large commercial space inside. The atrium is cut into the south corner of the building to allow for natu-ral daylight and movable louvers provide for shade when needed. During the day the sacred space at the bottom of the atrium is illuminated through its frosted glass ceiling creating a contemplative atmosphere.The atrium continues into the office space of the building to visually connect public and private pro-gram and to provide natural light and limiting the need for typical artifical lighting. The floor plates are extended in a way to provide shade for the floor below and create outdoor space for the offices.

Section The first three floors contain commercial program to bring traffic into the building. The lightrail will bring in more pedestrian traffic to this area and make the building more accessible. Every floor has ample outdoor space to provide a more pleasant atmosphere to visit, reflect, or work in.

Private Space The atrium extends into the private office space of the building. The shape of the floor plan allows for a separated area that can be used as a meeting space or large work area. These offices have a physical connection to the atri-um and a visual connection to the sacred space below. To take into account the need for ample office space, the atrium does not extend all the way through the building but large balconies on the street facing side of the build-ing with similar structure provide continuity throughout the high rise. The balconies and atrium allow occupants to feel connected to the outside environment and to the rest of the building despite its typical high rise program.
MONTROSE PAVILIONHOUSTON, TEXAS
The Montrose pavilion is a mixed use building includng an art gallery, bike shop, coffee shop, furniture store, and light rail stop. It is located in Montrose, a culturally saturated part of Houston, between the shops on Westheimer Road and the Museum District. The intention was to create a space of mass and void emphasized with a variation of light and heavy materials. The masses are represented with concrete and the voids are represented by thin tensile structure and glass. These differences in space and material create a visual transition from the varying programs and allow the building to appear more open and welcoming to the pedestrian traffic that will come through this area.

The Montrose Pavilion is located in the middle of a district filled with small businesses, museums, art galleries, and the opportunity to be a more pedestrian friendly part of Houston. If the lightrail system is extended into this part of town, people can go from one Montrose attraction to another easily without worrying about driv-ing. The pavilion, which includes a bike repair shop, provides a space where pedestrians can easily access and an outdoor area that can be used even when the building itself is closed. With a bike repair shop, an art gallery, a furniture store, and a bar, this building provides a destination to connect the Montrose District to the Museum District which is easily accessed by the lightrail. SITE LOCATION
It is in close proximity to the Museum District and the popular shops, restaurants, and bars on Westhiemer and within walking/biking distance to surrounding schools.
PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATIONThe distinction of mass and void provides entrances for pedestrians and connects public space with private space.
PROGRAMThe pavilion is sectioned into three blocks parallel to Montrose Blvd. The largest section contains an art gallery and bar. The second and third sections contains a bike repair shop and bike storage. The mass running perpendicular to Montrose Blvd. contains the furniture gallery and the exterior bar space. The spaces between these masses are constructed with glass and tensile steel structure to create transparent transtions between the various programs.

Houstons freeways provide a means for getting from one place to another quickly and efficiently. However, it only does this across long distances and creates problems for pedestrian traffic. On a large scale, the freeways do connect the city. On a smaller scale, it creates a large disconnect in areas sur-rounding Downtown where people cannot move around easily over short dis-tances. The space that the freeways take up currently lacks the kind of density needed for an active downtown; no one can work or live there. Because the city is designed for and around cars, it is almost impossible to get anywhere on foot. If you live in a neighborhood right next door to Downtown, you cannot simply walk a block away from your home because it is separated by a freeway.
POPULATION DENSITY (People per Sq. Mile): The large scale buildings in Down-town suggest that the population there is greater than surrounding areas, but in reality the density is lower.
Density To diagram the density of workers and residents, we made a definition that created a three dimensional bar graph where the height of each bar represents the population of the corre-sponding block. After overlaying the speed and density diagrams, we noticed that the highway does not allow the city to develop along or around it. It also disconnects the neighborhoods that make up Downtown and prevents pedestrians from getting anywhere without driving. This was very evident where Allen Parkway, Memorial Drive, and I-45 come together and is a per-fect illustration of the problems the freeways bring to Houston.

Speed To diagram these observations parametrically, we dia-grammed the car speeds in and around Downtown and the density of people that live and work there. To do this, we used Grasshopper to overlay a grid of points over a map of Houston and then assigned a z value to each of the points depending on the average speed of the respective streets at a certain time of day. This created a topographic surface derived from the speeds; the surface was higher around the freeways and dropped drastically over the streets on either side of them. These diagrams show a section of Downtown where the high-ways and streets run parallel. At 5 a.m. speeds are as posted on both the streets and freeways but during 7 a.m. or rush hour, the speeds are almost the same for both the streets and freeways. This is also the case for rush hour in the evening. It is evident from these diagrams and the diagram of popula-tion and worker density that the highways are largely con-tributing to the disconnect between the three neighborhoods.

InterventionBy creating a pedestrian network between Downtown, Fourth Ward, and the washington area, these neighborhoods will be connected. Eleanore Tinsley park is currently rarely used by more than the occasional jogger, and adding com-mercial program will attract a wider range of people.

City blocks in Houston are around 500 square feet and the edges of these blocks are dedicatied to parking lots or garages. By making the blocks smaller, internalizing parking, and making the sidewalks wider, pedestrian activity is promoted.
MIXED USE APARTMENTS BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA
Palermo Soho is one of the many neighborhoods that make up Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is comprised of high end stores, restaurants, bars, and young pro-fessionals seeking luxury apartments. This site is located in an area very simi-lar to the Montrose District in Houston, Texas. It is in walking distance from bus lines and the subway which connects Buenos Aires. Because it is an apartment building, tenants do not get to enjoy the luxury of having their own backyards. Therefore this building has large balconies and shifted floor plates to give ample private outdoor space, increased natural lighting, and views for each apartment.

SITE
Site The site is located in Palermo Soho, a subdivision of the neighborhood Pal-ermo, and is characterized by an alternative culture. It is filled with fashion, design, and music which is adapted into the traditional low buildings of the area. It is also an area that attracts many local and foreign young profes-sionals. Overall, the area is much like the Montrose District in Houston. Surrounding the site are train, bus, and subway lines all within walking distance that easily access the rest of Buenos Aires. The density of build-ings in this area is high and leaves little room for parks or private space.

Program Most buildings in this neighborhood have mixed use programs. The first few floors consist of commercial space or private businesses while the rest of the building contains apartments or other types of private residences. Parking is primarily located underground to preserve space for more usable program. This allows for increased density and more efficient city blocks. Also, because there arent any parks around the site, green space is added into the layout of each individual unit. This space is located next to a cut into each floorplan which allows for light to travel through the building and reach further into each of those units.

HOUSTON ADVANCED
RESEARCH CENTER THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS
HARC is a non-profit organization which strives to improve the natural and human environment through the research of sustainable practices. Their re-search involves ecosystems, water, air and climate, clean energy, the built en-vironment, and environmental health. Their new campus is located on the site next to their old campus in Lone Star College. Because it is in the Woodlands, the building footprint has to accomodate for the trees on site and clear as little land as possible while creating a sustainable and pleasant place to work in.
Concept: The two buildings are connected by a system of bridges which create open spaces in themain buildings when they touch.
Sustainability The program is separated into two separate buildings. One building contains space such as a gallery and an auditorium which are meant to be used by the public. The second building contains offices and the laboratory and is primarily used by HARC researchers. By separating public from private space, energy to power one build-ing or the other can be preserved when the public space is closed and vise versa.
Concept A series of bridges connect public and private space together and create outdoor space that adds more views of the natural environment. The bridges act as an extension of the gallery which will display the research done at HARC and allows visitors to view different layers of the surrounding ecosystem. When the bridges intersect the office area, they create open areas for seating or conferences.

Building Assembly Each section of the building has its own HVAC and electrical systems in or-der to preserve energy. During times when the building is closed to visitors, the public section does not need to be powered. There is also a green roof which adds extra insulation to parts of the building. Louvers provide shading without creating closed off spaces and a system of i-beams creates a struc-ture from which the bridges connecting the two sections of the building hang.
