  • ACADEMIC / ELECTIVE NIGHT - 2018

    6:00 Presentation - Cafeteria 6:30 – 7:30 Visit with Electives/AP/Counselors

& Department Chairs (See handout) 7:00 Cheer and Drill Team meeting in

Library 7:00 Girls Athletics Gym 1

    Boys Athletics Gym 2

  • If students are going to meet high expectations and standards, high school is too late to begin and too

    early to end.

  • The amount of new technical information has been doubling every

    two years.

It is predicted to double every 72 hours by 2020.

  • Virtually every job in the country requires some skill with information-processing

    technology.

  • To thrive in today’s world and tomorrow’s workplace, middle

school students must learn how to learn and learn how to think.

  • We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet

    exist…

…Using technologies that haven’t yet been invented.

  • To gear up for the future, a middle school student must make wise course selections.

  • Students need to begin to make choices as early as 6th grade.

  • Taking advanced mathematics courses in high school will

increase the likelihood of college admission.

  • Challenging courses help kids graduate from college

Finishing a course beyond the level of Algebra 2 more than doubles the odds that a student who enters college will

    complete a bachelor’s degree.

  • In the Past…

A high school education was sufficient

Today … skilled workers need specialized training beyond the high school level.

  • Currently...

All students must exhibit a determination and dedication to completing advanced courses in high school. Today, a post-secondary education is a necessity, not a luxury.

What Matters Today in College Admissions

  • The most important thing middle school students can do to prepare for college is to sign up for the

right courses and to work hard to pass them.

  • Welcome to Peet!We are excited you are here!

    NEW SCHOOL YEAR…NEW RESPONSIBILITIES…

    NEW OPPORTUNITIES…

  • A typical day at Peet…

Our hours are 8:50 to 4:00. We have a 7 period day. We offer tutorials before and after school

  • How will taking High School courses in Jr. High help me??

Will allow more time to take extra electives in high school

Allows time to take extra academic classes (Foreign Language, Math, Science, etc…)

Gives students extra time to take 3-hour Career and Technology courses

  • Students will be initially enrolled in the next appropriate level of class in the progression of their math development based on the real dataFor example, a 6th grader in Advanced

Math will be enrolled in 7th grade Pre-Algebra PreAP.

District Math Assignments for Incoming Seventh Graders

  • Parents/guardians will select the math course for which they feel their student is best prepared:

    7th grade math 7th grade Pre-Algebra PreAP

Sixth grade students wanting to take ALGEBRA I (a high school course) will need to obtain credit for 8th grade math by one of the following two ways: Pass a CBE for 8th grade math or take 8th grade math in summer school.

MATH Course Selection for Incoming Seventh Graders

  • What is Pre AP?

Rigorous academic content both in and out of the classroom

In-depth knowledge and use of higher level thinking skills

Involves independent study Often requires additional reading and

    research

  • Pre AP Math Different from 6th Grade Advanced and different from other Pre-AP

courses - jump from 6th grade curriculum to 8th grade curriculum Fast-paced class/increased rigor Homework almost every night Students may struggle/will need to study Maintain an 80 or higher throughout the year – conference will be set

up for those who are struggling Testing:

Pre-Algebra students will take the 8th Grade STAAR TestAlgebra students will take the EOCGeometry students will take the 8th Grade STAAR Test(have already taken the EOC)

  • Pre AP Language ArtsWhile the curriculum in all language arts classes is similar, the purpose of the Pre-AP program is to prepare students to be successful in AP (Advanced Placement) courses in high school.

Pre-AP courses are open to any student who wishes to take on the challenge of advanced academics; however, those who choose to enroll should be prepared for additional rigor that accompanies such courses.

Our goal is to offer a curriculum that will challenge and develop students’ critical thinking skills. This course requires more individual initiative, analytical reading, student interaction, research, and time for outside class preparation. Students should be prepared to spend more time on homework.

    • All Pre-AP language arts students are required to complete an at-home book project each grading period.

    • Students should have passed STAAR reading in the 6th grade in order to ensure success as we will move more quickly in Pre-AP classes.

    • To be successful in Pre-AP language arts, students should have a solid background in reading and writing and have a strong work ethic.

  • Pre AP ScienceWhile the curriculum in all science classes is similar, the purpose of the Pre-AP program is to prepare students to be successful in AP (Advanced Placement) courses in high school.

All Pre-AP science students are required to complete an Independent Study Project that involves extensive research, time management, and independent analysis. The project will start during the first nine weeks.

Students will be required to choose a problem that can be answered themselves by designing an original experiment to test their hypothesis or an engineering project which involves working with a partner and building a vehicle. The project will continue into second semester and culminate with the district science fair in January.

  • Pre AP Historyeir academic career •May involve time consuming independent study•Ability to persevere when challenging material is presented•Must have an understanding of time commitment & balance of course load•Willingness to ask for help when necessary •Desire to ask questions & participate in class discussion •Positive work ethic & willingness to succeed•Ability to plan ahead on major projects

  • Agreement for Pre-AP Courses

I accept the academic challenges of Pre-AP I will request help when needed so I will not

fall behind in class assignments I will devote my best efforts to be

successful Success is primarily my responsibility Please note: Students may only exit a Pre-

AP class according to the agreement found in the Program of Studies.

  • Remember the choices you make now will help you prepare for the

    real world and the future.
