7. Explanation of the Changes:

Overview: The program of Health and Physical Education – and its major Human Performance &

Physical Fitness has undergone recent changes and growth. The purpose of these Substantive

Program Modifications is to better represent these departmental changes, i.e., addition of new

faculty/expertise, changes in the broader discipline, and to better meet the needs of the students.

1) Change in Program Title: Human Performance & Physical Fitness will become Human

Performance. Within the SDBOR system only South Dakota State University has a program with

the same name, i.e., Exercise Science, and similar, albeit more, areas of specialization. Other

institutions within the SDBOR system programs have names similar to, or variations of, Human

Performance and Physical Education. We are not proposing this name change to increase or

decrease competition for students, rather it is our opinion that Human Performance is a better

characterization of the broader disciple, more clearly states the nature of major, and better

represents the training and backgrounds of our faculty.

2) We have added WEL 100 – Wellness for Life 1cr and Wellness for Life Lab – as required

courses. Given the stated purpose of the major is, in part, to prepare students for certification and

employment in exercise, fitness, and/or health education broadly construed we believe it is

necessary to provide students with a broad-based lecture and lab course that provides students

with knowledge and hands-on experience of making wellness and health related decisions.

Program Forms: Substantive Program Modification Form (Last Revised 08/2016)

3) We are proposing a name change for the specialization area of Fitness Administration to become

Fitness and Sport Administration. The purpose of this name change is to better characterize the fact

that this area reflects more than fitness. We believe the inclusion of the term Sport better

characterizes this area of specialization.

4) Related to the name change for the specialization, i.e., Fitness Administration to Fitness and Sport

Administration, we are proposing to make two course substitutions. We are proposing to replace

BADM 310 Business Finance with PE 412 Financial Aspects of Sport. Second, we are proposing

to replace BADM 350 Legal Environ. of Business with PE 414 Law and Ethics. In both cases the

PE courses will be taught by HPE faculty. With the addition of two new faculty members we can

now provide better coverage of these and other courses. By having these courses taught within our

program we alleviate the burden on BADM faculty as these courses BADM were reportedly often

over-enrolled.
