However, we will look at abstraction beginning with the impressionists in the late 19th Century.

HOW DO WE CREATE ABSTRACT ART?

First: You must know abstraction is a thought process, ask yourself: “How can I deconstruct and simplify this image?”

Possible things to look at when deconstructing a subject. Angles/position What is the subject? Shape Color Light/value

HOW DID ROY LICHTENSTEIN CREATE AN ABSTRACT WORK OF ART?

Page 16: Abstract art

POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES TO USE: MULTIPLE ANGLES

One technique used by the cubists was to show multiple angles or sides of a subject at one time.

Another artist who used multiple angles in their artwork was the influential Paul Cezanne

Page 17: Abstract art

POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES TO USE: EXAGGERATION

Other artist choose an important part of the image, and once simplified they exaggerate that element by repeating or enlarging which brings emphasis to it.

What is Duchamp exaggerating in this image?

What does this exaggeration do to the image?

Page 18: Abstract art

POSSIBLE TECHNIQUES TO USE: SYMBOLISM Some artists represent a subject using just one part of that

subject to represent a symbol Other artist utilize symbols the viewer is already familiar with.
